Does Anyone Agree?

Palpated blood pressures are just an estimation, not a true validation of a blood pressure. Since you are only getting the systolic pressure or guessamation of one. The same is true estimating blood pressure by radial pulse, caratoid, femoral and trying to guess a pressure, since you have a pulse located in these areas, as well has been proven a myth.

This probably deserves its own thread, but wouldn't you say that if a radial pulse is present, it indicates that BP is at least sufficient for adequate perfusion? I'm not advocating guessing approximate pressure just due to the fact of a pulse being present in certain locations, just a quick rough idea in certain circumstances about perfusion. Cap refill could be used in the same setting, but could also be misleading in older adults. What do you think?

Becksdad: Thanks for that mate  you made it really easy to understand!

It’s hard when your only learning and you have different people saying different things.

I'm with you Timmy, becksdad has a way of explaining issues up front and around all the corners...pretty cool!

I haven't given enough thought to blood pressure it seems...

I guess I will now...!

Timmy, when i read you quote I thought it was a good little piece of advice, actually so good that I though perhaps you pulled it out of a textbook.

Perhaps the medics who gave you that advice, to whome you refer to as "try hards" actually learned a thing or two when they spent all that time studying in university.

Here in NY, quite a few of the EMT-B instructors emphasize that while yes, a BP needs to be taken, it is the least important of the VS. In fact, when us old farts are recerting, they always make a note of saying something when the first thing we reach for after the primary assessment is the cuff. Now they want to see pulse, resps, even skin temp and condition prior to BP. I haven't quite been convinced of this new way of looking at VS, but I definitely agree that without other findings it has very little value.

Well, you should be able to get skin temp while getting a pulse and getting a resp can be estimated easily while looking at the person. Heck, if you time it right, you should be able to get skin temp and pulse while taking a BP anyways.
