Long Island has a lot of great volly FD and EMS services.. but the cost of living there is VERY VERY HIGH.....I would find a place u want to live (translation can afford) and then look around the area for volly services.... if you ask about number of calls,,, 300 is about 1 a day, 600-700 2 a day,, etc... thats the way you can gauge business....

Then just ask about the things you want like upgrading to ALS,, training etc.

Good Luck

In the same region you have a majority of Jersey which is also volunteer. Middletown, NJ has a large volunteer system and so do a lot of towns in central jersey. The volunteer ems is all BLS, we have monoc that runs ALS in Monmouth and Ocean counties, I'm not sure who does it for the rest of the state though. The cost of living is less than long island for the most part. Long island is extremely high priced for no reason.

Hi Walrus,

Do you have family ties to the US, or will your employer cover the legal expenses of getting you a work visa? The only reason I ask is it is very difficult to enter & work in the USA (legally anyway) from Canada or any other non-lottery nation.

Just wanted to be sure you checked this out. Most often potential employers are not aware of the USCIS (formerly INS) requirements. From what I understand, even to volunteer and get your EMT certification you will need a social security number.

Hope it all works out,

BASE (ex-pat canuck)
