Hello, I am a highschool student (and first responder via BSA) seriously considering volunteering as an EMT-B with the local fire+rescue squads. I know that this is supposed to be a site for current EMS personnel and adults, but I would greatly appreciate it if I could try and learn as much as possible before volunteering. I want to be as competent as possible going in, and this seemed like a good place to start. Thank you!

Hello and welcome to the city!! What do you mean by first responder via BSA? Not following the acronym, probably a local one. What grade in HS are you? Where are you from? What is your date of birth and SS#????? j/k Welcome anyway :)

Sorry, I meant that I have first responder training, because I am in the Boy Scouts of America. Very basic, but I know about stabilization and CPR.

What state are you in? If your are a National Registry state you will have to be 18 to take the test if I'm not mistaken.

Maryland, the recruiter at the local volunteer Fire Department/EMS service said that they can accept people at 16, and train them to EMT-B standards. However, I wont be an offical EMT-B untill I turn 18. Its pretty complicated.
