Just listened to this lecture. Apparantly Detroit EMS has a 0% survival rate from out of hospital cardiac arrest and the next lowest or in the bottom 3 is Chicago.

Not sure where KC MO's rate is but who knows.

This is an interesting lecture by a Seattle physician. He talks about the city's claimed 48% survival rate (hospital discharge) for witnessed out-of-hospital VF cardiac arrests.

Dr. Eisenberg, Copass, and Cobb are legends as well as visonaries. Too bad we cant get many of the EMS systems antionally to adopt the lessons they have learned on EMS system design.

The most significant lesson to be learned from Seattle is how to cook the numbers to make your system look better than it really is.

Can someone explain or direct me to an explanation on how they cooked their numbers. I have heard this a lot, but have never had it explained.

Quoted for cutting to the chase

When they tout their cardiac arrest save numbers, they only count witnessed V-fib. Then they compare that number to other cities' numbers, who are giving actual total numbers. Took years and years for that to come out. By then, the idea that they were über medics -- like so many other EMS myths -- was already well established in folklore.
