Driving over the speed limit

Recommended Posts

Both the chauffeurs for the engine and truck companies of the FDNY, and the ambulance "Motor Vehicle Operators" (read that as the EMT or Paramedic assigned to drive the ambulance that day) of the FDNY EMS Command, are, per departmental published policy, allowed to go, when necessary, no more than 10 MPH above the posted road speeds.

NOBODY is allowed to drive faster than 50 MPH, which is the maximum speed posted on any road within the city, in a state that has, on some hi speed roadways outside the city, a posted max of 65 MPH.

OK, now I have to re qualify my own statement. The 10 MPH above posted speed limit being allowed is not only when necessary, but as road conditions allow one to do it.

Going 50 in a 40 MPH zone is asinine, if there is a foot of snow on the roadway. Also, there's Vehicle and Traffic Law #1104, which gets distilled down to "You operate your vehicle with due regard to all others on the road."
