Even simple vehicle extrication is so specialized and technical anymore, that pretty much everyone has to be on a similar page, to make things work out properly. Rescue and EMS need to be closely related to improve the outcome for the victim, IMO. Even if your firefighting skills are limited to stand and point. There's no excuse for having low expectations on rescue personnel. We have specific people, guidelines and outfits. On an MVA, it's either extrication suits or TOG. Everyone has both, so attire is covered. The victim is accessed, by EMS, treated as necessary, and at the same time the person who has taken charge of rescue does a survey to see what will be the best way to remove the victim(s). We share info as much as possible, so it's safe and as quick as possible, but we take the time to do it right. If you can't work together, you could really screw over your victim.
