Gotta love the nut cases we work with

On Friday, November the 14, 2008, the FDNY held a citywide drill.

The scenario was, the "bad guys" released a medical biological "bug" that, while not fatal, would be debilitating to all suffering from it. To battle the biological organism, between 0800 and 0000 hours local time, all on duty members of the FDNY, both fire and EMS, as directed to do so by dispatch, and even off duty members and retirees, were to proceed to specified BIOlogical Points Of Distribution to "receive a vaccine shot", and return to service, as we have to protect our own before we can protect the rest of the city. The event was called BIO-POD.

As there was no actual "bug", on arrival at the POD, members, after being registered in the computer net, would be offered a flu shot. They could decline it if contra-indicated, had had the shot already, or just didn't want to be given the flu shot, then be checked out of the POD, also recorded into the computer net. Also, the apparatus officers signed out new packages of potassium pills, in case of either a radiation release, or detonation of a dirty bomb, to protect those on the apparatus.

I ran the exit line computer. Easiest 16 hours of overtime I ever did, now 2 years in a row.

One ladder company Lieutenant, sitting behind me to get his shot, after warning the 2 nurses giving the injections he was going to do it, suddenly screamed "AAAAHHHHH!" at the top of his lungs.

I don't know which was the bigger reaction, that nobody but me reacted, and that they need a new ceiling at that EMS station, from where I jumped through it!

Afterwards, I was laughing, too, for both the stated reasons.
