  1. Im still not defensive, Mike, this whole thing is just thoughts from everyone. It just seemed that you were taking what I was saying wrong. Its hard to read somethings and know how to take them, being theres no tones, or gestures to go with it. Like I said, what I wrote was just my thoughts. I live in the " I dont want to not do now, what i'll regret later" type of menatality. Thats not for everyone. And I accept that, to each their own.
  2. I may of missed it but i didnt find any past threads on CCP (Cardio Cerebral Resus) as opposed to CPR. Ive been reading in EMS magazine, and in Fire/Rescue magazine, that there are a few medical directors around the country trying this ( Names werent listed). Does anyone know if AHA has run any trials in any areas as far as this goes. I've read alot of convincing material to back this up, I just havent found any cons to this. I know AHA is the primary standard for the large majority oif the country, and im guessing that why there has been no cons listed, being they dont have to. Keep priming the pump, the o2 in the blood will be enough. What are your thoughts on this, do you see pro's or cons?
  3. Im not usually one to do this but here goes. First of all MIKE, I added my thoughts to the post that I started, just because I start the post doesnt mean I cant add my own thoughts on it. Second just like you always tell people to take it to PM, have you ever heard of a thing called email. I you think I have a problem, or am being defensive, try sending a message, before making assumptions. You seem to assume things pretty quick. As I stated previously, it doesnt matter to me how people view me, im not on this planet to please everyone, I am here to do whatever was predestined for me to do. And as I said, i just posted my opinion, which is "mine", its not a judgement against others, or a shot at others, or a " were better than you" comment. I posted the thread, let others post, than put my own thoughts into this. You can take it as you want, which is usually in a negative light.
  4. I can say that because, conforming would mean changing, i dont change, i open my mouth and talk in my normal tone. And the "common sense" comment I keep seeing, has nothing to do with this subject, common sense would tell you not run into a structure fire, common sense tells you to wear a seatbelt at all time in a vehicle, do we do that in ambulances all the time, no. When its all said and done, this is our generation, just like all of you who are older did stuff looked down on by the public, we do things looked down upon by you. But the realization is, we are the people giving the care for the next 25 years, while everyone elses careers are winding down. We train hard, and learn as much as possible, whenever possible, and we also have one life to live, and I know myself, I dont want to be someone who looks back, and thinks "damn, all the stuff I didn't do because I was to worried about what people thought" Life is built on memories, experiences, and actions. Not being conservative and worried about every little thing people think about you. When we show up on scene and one of our rescue guys is sleeved, and the pt is having an MI or what have you, I cant recall one time there ever being a problem. Our operation flows the same way as always. Being a proffesional isnt the color of your skin, or the colors in it, its how you carry yourself, how you work, how you apply your knowledge in a correct manner, how you treat people. Everyone has predjudices in this world, as you have seen in the posts here. And along with that comes not what i view as a fun life, but a life filled with pleasing others at the cost of yourself. These are my thoughts, they may seem ignorant to others, but such is life.
  5. So much has been said about, we need to do this for our pt's and we need to do that, and my favorite, they'll think were going to rob them or that were scum. I dont remember being told in school, that your whole entire life has to change so that you are viewed in a certain way. And with that said, i'd love to see the person who can make themselves up so that every possibl pt contact they will have, will view them in a good light. You want to know who is going to view you as a good person, the people that dont judge books by their covers. I have met many people who have judged me right off the bat, why?, because im a big guy and my usual look is one of a mean person, then I say a few words to them and they instantly loosen up, why? because im professional, and when appropriate can give them a laugh or two, to ease their mind, or just listen to what they have to say. I dont care what people think of me, I do the right thing, I have a family a house and blah blah blah. I am a responsible adult who took it upon myself to go through school and learn what it takes to save a persons life, or atleast get them to a better place in life than they were 15 minutes ago. Everyone is going to judge you, whether its by your hair, car, shoes, house, tattoos, pay scale, whatever. It is not our "job" to conform to what everyone thinks we should look at, it is our "job" to constantly study, and train, and learn, and practice, and do everything in our power to do the best and be the best we can. And though I saw a few things about piercings, this was for tattoos.
  6. Ok Ruff, Maybe I wasnt clear enough, first I will respond, I dont care what the pt's think of their providers choice of body modification, nor do I need anyone to tell me what is ok. In this state in the majority of our fire dept you can have any tattoo anywhere, you want. I wanted to know what "You all" thought, not protocols or citizens or rules or what have you.
  7. theres no rules in fire rescue as far as tattoos i know of here
  8. Maybe this has been covered maybe not, either way there are new people on this site who may have a new perspective on it. With that said, how do you all feel about people having tattoos showing, such as the arms being sleeved, or a back tattoo that you can see the top of it above your collar. I dont mean trash tattoos that look they were done in prison, I mean nice work, the person who does my tattoos is a world known artist with top notch work, my tattoos are in a few different magazines, and on a couple websites, their not crappy work. I work in Florida as many know, and we are almost entirely a Fire/Rescue state, and one thing you'll find here is this is a big state for tattoos, all walks of life have them here, from firefighters to judges with full body suits. I understand that alot of people look at people with tattoos in a negative light, but the question is, how do you look at them. The people dont concern me as much being that when im there in their home doing everything I can to fix their immediate problems, and potential oncoming problems, they dont worry about whats on my arms, chest or back. I would appreciate some real answers here.
  9. My dept got word that there is a good possibility there will be 100 engines with crews being taken from Florida and New York and sent to California. The trucks will go via train, the crews via airplane. How many more years is it going to be that California is loosing hundreds of thousands of acres to wildfires. And unless i'm mistaken it gets worse every year. And the one constant I do not hear, is what is being done in the winter months to prepare for the coming fire season, other than cutting fire trails and having prescribed burns. Are there other preplans out there that any of you know of, as far as preparation?
  10. I wouldnt say most pay good, and who pays state retirement in a 3rd service company
  11. (Mitchell said he would consult fire Chief Rosemary Cloud about whether closing any of the stations would hurt 911 response times. Cloud did not return a telephone call Tuesday) Quote. http://cms.firehouse.com/content/article/a...mp;sectionId=46 http://www.fireengineering.com/news/newsAr....html?id=164093 Station closures in Georgia, and this guy states he wonders if it will hurt response times, thats amazing to me. Those stations were put there for a reason, " To help response times". There are stations all around the country looking at possible closings. We have morons who can shoot a round ball into a basket and get 50 million a year, but we cant keep EMS stations open.
  12. In the past 6 months I have seen 5 people under 25 y/o die on the Er table due to pain pills. The reality of it is it takes nothing but a sad face to go and get pain pills these days. And to get what you want ( I cant take those they break me out, or, ive taken them and they dont touch the pain). Theres people out there shopping in 1-5 different private dr's offices. They get what they want and sell the rest on the street or 5 times the value. With a perscription drugs are legal, they dont leave any odor on your breath, and for many people give the the appearance they are tired, instead of ripped out of their mind. Until there is a nationwide push to do something about this, it will only get worse. I'd love to see a state by state statistic for prescription drug overdoses.
  13. I know that here in Jacksonville Florida, we have 4 private services, paying 13 an hour for medic full time, and 17.80 an hour to work PRN as a medic, which is the way to go being you could pretty much work full time being PRN due to lazy people not showing up for work. Have you looked into when and where you have to go to challenge our state paramedic test, and with that are you national regristry? I hope so or no challenge. There are many options for you, you could go through fire school in St Augustine, and get hired on, where you would probably end up on a rescue within 6 mths, you could take the Paramedic Rn bridge class in Volusia, and bridge over. Or you could work third service, and have basically no retirement. Third service here is not what it is in other cities, its alot of nursing homes and Hospice runs. an before you go moving to Daytona, dont forget you have Jacksonville, and St Augustine, and it only take about an hour and a half to drive to Volusia from up here. All things to think about.
  14. As far as past or present back issues, you have to look at how much companies,cities,counties,townships,etc.. are paying for insurance rates. And along with that you have to look at what they pay for each person who goes out on workers comp. They are going to cover their behinds as much as possible, and if you look at it their stopping a potential problem before it has a chance to start.
  15. I will be a paramedic in a few months, I have however been a Emt for a number of years now, and I am also a paid firefighter/emt. There is alot of time involved in paramedic schooling, aside from just the class itself. My class consists of 200 hours in hospital and 400 hours ride along with a department other than the obne you work for, if you work for one. On the other hand, if you end up working for a fire department or a service with shift schedules, its pretty nice working one day and being off for two (24/48). It opens up alot of time for alot of things ( school, family, vacation,etc..) A major question you need to ask yourself, is can you take the time it is going to take to go through this schooling and give it 100%. Because I can assure you that not giving paramedic class your all will end badly, amounting to a bunch of wasted money. Something to think hard about. Its a important job with alot of responsibility.
  16. Why would anyone want to be on the FDNY with that pay. Probably because #1 you dont go into the fire dept because of the money you go in because you want to do the job, #2 New York runs a ton of calls, and many depts around this country base alot of their practices after the FDNY. Since when did this job become running for the most money, if you worked there then you know how many people apply every time they hire, and I would bet, 95% of them are not looking to make alot of money, hell they would probably take a pay cut. All that money talk sounds to me that, your heart or whatever you want to call it, is in the wrong place. And I can say this being when I left my job to go to a fire/rescue dept, I took about a 20,000$ a year pay cut. but this is what I wanted t do, and that job was only to pay for all my school, and my bills while I was in school.
  17. This is the best part of this whole thread, recognizing the weak points and researching it and learning. Ive heard so many times. This is my weakest point " ________" But the person never takes the time to do studies or research that subject. Any free moment I have I look for changes to what I have already been taught, or new faster ways to do things, or just look up things that I may only come across once in my career. Were supposed to never stop learning, but for many it stops the moment they get off probation and get into a lazy boy.
  18. That is ridiculous, you know the one thing ive always found to be odd about hazing, is that when people do things that are "overboard" to the new people they think that at day 366 when that person is off probation everything is going to be forgotten and they will be buddies. There are several things that have happened in fire and ems services that were called hazing, that led to the "rookies" hating the people who did it to them. How does that build a team spirit?. Maybe my view is wrong, but its just a view.
  19. In the dept I was recently hired on with ive noticed one thing that is consistant at most of our stations. And that is, everyone wants the initial B/P taken manually, and that it should never be taken over a sleeved arm. I have been on units in several of my surrounding counties due to paramedic school ride time, and no one pushes like my dept as far as b/p taking goes. How do you all feel about it and what is your personal practice. Second, I have noticed from all the way back to emt school, no teo people like their leads put in the same spots. Some like them next to the clavicles, some like the arms, some like the wrists. And along with that, some like the upper thigh region, the thighs themselves, the ankles, the top of the ankles the sides as well. Where do you prefer their placement and why. I know this is simple stuff, but im always curious as to the habits of different medics. I know many of them have come from, "Thats the way they were shown" and it just stuck with them.
  20. Im wondering how you all came to find this site, was it for the chat, to meet new people, to learn? I'll begin, during paramedic school, I found myself studying late everynight and when I had a question there was no one awake i could ask, so I searched and found this. And Akflightmedic hapened to be in the chat that night, and everytime I needed help id come in find him and get my answers. Then I started meeting people, and the rest is history, I have since told many people about the site, and the help they can find here.
  21. I want you all to know I am the man behind the iron mask, all who cross me shall feel my wrath, j/k im not, or am I
  22. www.rescueexams.com this site creates tests out of the newest essentials of firefighting books, and the newest Emt books, It is a great site for refreshing or preparing for written tests, it will let you know where your weak points are. Its a free site, so use it and keep using it until your testing high. Enjoy. B. Bausch
  23. n0 I have alot of good info, give me an idea of what your looking for
  24. The whole scene was ridiculous, thats why I posted it. Its seems those guys were waiting on that crew, but at the same time the crew didnt handle it in the best manner, I always find letting the police deal with people is usually easier than getting into confrontations.
