  1. Well that's easy enough. It takes a month or less of ambulance-specific training to make a nurse a competent pre-hospital practitioner. Learning to use ambulance-specific devices, like portable respirators, portable suction, stretchers, extrication boards and collars, etc... as well as the situational awareness to recognise your surroundings and how they contribute to the patient's condition and your care. Beyond that, ALS training is ALS training, and is really no different pre-hospital than in-hospital. Nurses already have the foundation to build upon, unlike any other lay person you could drag into the job to use instead. By not being able to afford it, I assume you are talking about the costs of the educational system, and not administration of the actual EMS system itself? Obviously, setting up an education system from the ground up is no small task. Do you have medical and nursing schools there, or do your physicians and nurses come from the mainland or other countries?
  2. If that's what he did, then I totally agree. I'm just not totally convinced that he intended, or even reasonably expected to be in a crash. I don't know how far ahead of the suspect he was when he changed lanes. But I was more under the impression that he was simply performing a rolling road block, and the guy either accidentally or intentionally rammed him.
  3. I can't agree. Although there is plenty of blame to go around -- and it should -- that does not mean that she herself should not also accept responsibility for her personal FAIL. I'm not of the theory that if everyone doesn't get punished, then no one should get punished. If you fail, your punishment is irregardless of other failures or their punishment. Two words: Personal Responsibility.
  4. Or, as Billy Joel says, we didn't start the fire.
  5. LOL! My first negatives! Finally, I'm a member of the club! I'd like to thank all the little people...
  6. This would SO be the perfect way to get rid of that tramp! I really hope they do! To see her get hauled off in handcuffs would make me love this show forever! After all, not only did she break her SOP, the practised medicine without a licence, AND she must have misappropriated the RSI drugs, since they would not be stocked on an SF ambulance.
  7. Responding to Richard's questions and observations: I've seen the stories. But I believe the statistic is that cheerleading accounts for more SERIOUS injuries than other sports, not all injuries total. But a quick search on the Google shows a buttload of articles about it saying pretty much the same thing. One says cheerleading is the top cause of catestrophic injury in young women, period. Another article says cheerleading is not among the 7 most dangerous sports, however those statistics are based upon total number of all injuries by percentage of participation. Nope. He specifically refused her. Basically saying, "I say no. But you're the one there, and if you do it, it's on your arse." Preparation, Preoxygenation, Premedication, Paralyse, Pass the tube, Proof of placement, Post intubation care Yes. How do you splint a neck in the position found? There is a brand new collar out on the market now that supposedly does it, but I don't know of anyone using it. Although, he really did not have enough info to even suspect that when he blurted it out. He had no assessment yet. The more I hate Nancy, the more I like Rabbit. But I still will never watch this show again if he and Marisa hook up. That's just WAY overdoing the incestuous nature of the crew. Well obviously there is a competent legal advisor for this show, so they knew that EVERYBODY gets sued, not just one party. Too bad they don't have an EMS advisor who is as competent. LOL! They don't come right out and say he did the car crash on purpose for that reason, but it sure seems like it! Great plot twist, just like the basketball game set up, where there was pushing and shoving, and you expected a player to get hurt. Oh, and I wish I had a dollar for every run I've ever made in a strip club. They really need to get rid of her. That whole MD-Paramedic thing is the worst sub-plot of the entire show. Totally unbelievable plots, and she is not believable in the role. I'm not clear on that either. The scene was apparently intended to leave it open ended.
  8. There is no good option for an online A&P class. If there is one, it sucks. And most programmes won't accept one that did not include a lab component anyhow, so you will have wasted your time and money. I don't know who does an online pharm class, but I'm betting someone does. And I don't see any problem with taking it by distance. Just a fair warning, if you have never done distance learning before, don't try more than one class at a time. It turns out to not be for a LOT of people, and there are no refunds for figuring that out. Good luck!
  9. LOL! So true! You can't make this shyte up! Sorry to hear you won't be going to AFG.
  10. Hmmm... the article is dated 2 April, so yes, it is several days old. I'm wondering how it got past the JEMS news ticker? They were printing articles about this daily for awhile, and now they've totally dropped it. She definitely should have been fired, but I hope they're not stopping with her.
  11. http://paramedictv.ems1.com/Clip.aspx?key=CFA3B9131C434978 Interesting story and video. Doctor has stroke at wheel, and pulls over. Cop pulls up and decides he's drunk and handcuffs him in the back of her patrol car for an hour. Private EMS shows up, but apparently never even assesses the guy and leaves. Now everyone is getting sued. Sounds to me like it's all on the cop, unless the medics did make patient contact.
  12. http://www.ems1.com/communications-dispatch/articles/782114-Pa-medic-fired-after-mans-snowstorm-death/ Pa. medic fired after man's snowstorm death Curtis Mitchell died waiting 30 hours for help during bad weather despite repeated calls to 911 The Associated Press PITTSBURGH — A Pittsburgh emergency medical worker has been fired following the death of a man who waited 30 hours for help during a snowstorm despite repeated calls to 911. Mayor Luke Ravenstahl's office says Josie Dimon was fired Thursday. Her dismissal stems from the death of 50-year-old Curtis Mitchell during a February storm that dropped nearly two feet of snow on the city. Mitchell had a history of pancreatic inflammation. He and his girlfriend called 911 10 times seeking help for his abdominal pain, but medics couldn't reach their home because of the snow. He was asked to walk four blocks to an ambulance but couldn't make it. Three other medics were suspended. The paramedics union has said they would fight the suspensions. A phone message left Friday for Dimon hasn't been returned.
  13. Wow... very interesting case. I don't think I'll be hiring that lawyer anytime soon. http://www.ems1.com/pediatric-care/articles/804294-Fla-mom-awarded-10M-in-ambulance-birth-lawsuit/ Fla. mom awarded $10M in ambulance birth lawsuit Jury found the EVAC ambulance service negligent in the premature birth of boy WESH.com VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A jury awarded a Volusia County woman $10 million after finding the EVAC ambulance service negligent in the premature birth of a boy, now 6 years old and suffering with cerebral palsy. Margarita Chess was just over 6 months pregnant, when, in labor, she arrived at Bert Fish Medical Center in New Smyrna Beach. Halifax Medical Center didn't take her and instead, EVAC was called to transport Chess to Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando. The baby was born in the ambulance and though paramedics did CPR, the infant was deprived of oxygen. The hospitals and doctors settled with Chess for $1.4 million but EVAC went to trial and, according to the jury, is responsible for $8.6 million. EVAC spokesman Mark O'Keefe said "EVAC Paramedics have to care for the tragic consequences of illness and injury everyday. We stand behind our paramedics and intend to appeal this verdict."
  14. http://www.ems1.com/ambulances-emergency-vehicles/articles/804297-Car-with-man-on-hood-collides-with-ambulance-in-Pa/ Car with man on hood collides with ambulance in Pa. 4 people sent to the hospital after a woman drove a half mile with husband clinging to the hood By Adam McNaughton Pocono Record MIDDLE SMITHFIELD TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A bizarre Saturday afternoon crash in Middle Smithfield Township sent four people to area hospitals after a woman drove about a half mile down Route 209 with her husband clinging to the hood of her car before crashing head-on into an ambulance. The man was sent flying onto the road and was flown by helicopter to Lehigh Valley Hospital where he was in critical condition Sunday. State police said the series of events that led to the crash started when Judith Amman, 52, tried to drive away from her home on Edward Smith Boulevard during a verbal fight with her husband, Ricardo Amman, around 2:30 Saturday afternoon. As Judith Amman tried to drive away, Ricardo Amman jumped onto the hood of her 2010 Subaru Legacy, police said. She drove south on Edward Smith Boulevard and turned right onto Route 209 — with her husband still holding onto the hood. As she drove south on Route 209, a Bushkill ambulance headed toward her with emergency lights and sirens active after it was called to the area. The Subaru and the ambulance crashed head-on about a half mile south of Edward Smith Boulevard, near the Bennigan's Restaurant on Route 209. Ricardo Amman was thrown onto the hood of the ambulance and then rolled onto the road. He was flown by helicopter to Lehigh Valley Hospital and Judith Amman was taken by ambulance to Pocono Medical Center with minor injuries, as were the two men in the ambulance during the crash — Ryan Felmy, 26, of Bushkill, and Joseph Bolger, 21, of East Stroudsburg. Both vehicles were towed from the scene and traffic was tied up on Route 209 for several hours as state police from Swiftwater investigated the crash with a state police forensics unit. Charges are pending the outcome of the investigation and police did not say in which lane of Route 209 the crash took place or how the fight between Ricardo and Judith Amman started.
  15. Okay, let me then amend it to say that parents in general should not be in EMS. Not just mothers. All of my best partners have been single males with no children. I stick with what works best for me.
  16. Agreed, Maverick. My observations from this episode: No RSI protocol, yet she has RSI drugs? That is a MAJOR blooper! She pushed an empty syringe. The plunger was already all the way down when she hooked it up. If no RSI protocol, I guess crich was out of the question? Huge NBC logo on the television screen at Tyler’s house while he plays guitar, lol. ROFL @ Tyler’s gag on Boone! That was awesome! Helo responding to nursing home calls now? Had the guy not been critical, were they really going to transport him by air? STOP THIS NONSENSE!!! Rabbit holds a mask full of vomit against the patient’s face. Quit having him wearing his aviator sunglasses indoors. It’s so lame and stereotypical. Who’s watching the helo? Didn’t they learn their lesson after losing it the first time? Why didn’t Marisa and Rabbit change out of their contaminated clothes? Dr. Joe says, “San Francisco Fire Departments paramedics are among the finest in this country” ROFL! Maybe you oughta get out of California sometimes, Joe! Glenn standing up for his partner against his girlfriend is totally unrealistic. I have NEVER had a partner that I would blindly stand up for, much less against my girlfriend. And especially if I was a lowly EMT-B who didn’t know wtf I was talking about to begin with. Rabbit and his “I’m not leaving my partner!” rant is just as ridiculous. STOP IT! And then Boone goes on a tirade about Tyler not “being my partner”. FAIL on whoever named this episode. They should have named this episode “Partnership”, because they are wearing that whole angle out tonight. Rabbit talking to Marisa through the glass. You have to talk louder than that! And should we all maybe send some disposable razors to the director as a subtle message about these goddamn metrosexual beards? SHAVE GODDAMMIT! Marisa hung some sort of Saint medal on her control panel her first day, so she had already displayed a religious base. After all, she’s Mexican. The actors have been in character long enough now that the believability of the acting has significantly improved. They are definitely more comfortable with their characters. Dr. Joe sure got surprisingly weird over all this. If he's that flaky, I'll be glad to see him go. That guy's unstable and has obviously bad judgement. I don’t think they’re trying to get at Rabbit. I think they’re just using Rabbit to compound the charges on Dr. Joe, who the big wig (Nancy’s father) doesn’t like because he doesn’t like their relationship. Still not featuring enough Asians in this show.
  17. Because New York[ers] sucks. And suckiness is contagious. This was pretty much why I put Centennial and Humber up top, and said Niagara was a good choice for looking for jobs in that area. I suppose it may only be conventional wisdom, but I was under the same impression as BEorP about the regional bias.
  18. Good stuff, Phil! That reminds me of a video I found today:
  19. You have zero control over it. There is no "letting" it get to you. It just does. One of the many reasons that mothers shouldn't be in EMS.
  20. WTF was this, a Klan rally? I hope someone was cited for that idiocy.
  21. Thanks! That's what I thought! But the article seemed so sure that it was FD that I thought maybe the system had changed and I was out of the loop on it.
  22. Dammit, I knew I was forgetting something yesterday. I'll have to catch up on it tonight and chime in later. Thanks!
