This is an emt poem I found on the internet. I don't know if I'm putting it in the right section. I'm a noobie
Why I Do It
You watch us leaving,
Lights and sirens blaring.
You think of what the call might be,
But you can never imagine what we see.
The pain and suffering of an elderly dying,
As the family watches begging and crying.
You ask me why I do it,
With all the pain and tears shed how can I survive.
In return I say, Why?!
If you could help a fellow man would you leave him in the shadows to die.
If you could would you not want to give a person another breath to breathe,
And watch as their eyes fill with life instead of death.
Sure pain may come with the job,
But in return there is joy of a life that might be saved.
My team is there for support,
When the pain is more then I can bare.
I'm not in it for the glory,
But to watch the smile of a child that will see another day.
And I thank God for the skills he has given me,
So I may do my best no matter what the scene.

Thanks for sharing the poem with us..Actually it was very touching and true...I just lost my first pt and i cant tell u what it did to me..Reading this poem has made me realize that i must go on and continue to help people..Perfect timing...

It is not uncommon for poeple to have specific treatment (or non treatment) wishes. Whether you can honour these or not depends entirely on your local legislation, your service and your base hospitals policies.
Ok thanks for your input...I will ask them at the ambulance corp what i should do....Thanks again

Hello all.......Has anyone ever heard of a DNI (do not intubate)..My day job is working in a Nursing Home and for the first time today i heard a Social Worker tell a family member about a DNI...This PT doesnt want a DNR and doesnt want to be on any life support...Soo they are asking that if he goes into cardiac arrest to perform CPR but tell the ambulance drivers not to intubate...I dont get it...What do we do at this point..I think the family is filling out a living well....Do we abide by this living well....Any info would be helpful

Okay, maybe I missed it, but how can a deaf person perform simple procedures like communicate on the radio?.. to receive calls, orders, etc.. or to hear SHOTS FIRED!...
Be safe,
R/R 911
They cant and thats why they shouldnt be in this line of work...
-
There's a gulf of difference between hard of hearing and deaf. I have a co-worker who wears a hearing aid and uses a special stethoscope, but she is still able to hear and communicate. Would I want to work with a deaf partner? No way, no how. Put aside for the moment (because it's already been brought up) the issue of auscultating BPs and breath sounds. How am I and our patients supposed to communicate with someone who is completely deaf? By writing? By making sure I'm in a position where they can read my lips? I don't think so. Honestly, I can't even begin to express the number of times I rely on my partner's ability to hear, speak, and otherwise communicate in a shift.
Very well said.... =D>

Very Very funny....

No offense to anybody with disabiliites out there, but the
when the hell did prehospital emergency care become the Special Olympics? Look, we are doing a job! We need to lift heavy things, move quickly, and use our senses to assess and treat our patients. I'm sorry that only 2% of the population is fit to provide emergency care (1% will actually be in emergency services, %0.5 will still be there after 5 years), but its the nature of the work. You know what, no, no, let's let the deaf guy take the BP, the blind guy drive the ambulance, the guy with the wheelchair do the lifting and the one with the speech impediment give the report. So long as everybody has fun.
Exactly......Thats the point i was trying to make... =D>
-
The bottom line is....If you are deaf then you dont belong riding in the back of a ambulance..If you really want to help people there are many other jobs out there that you can be doing that would be consider helping people and not actually putting someones life at risk..I dont want to sound cruel but this is life..We are there to help people not make ourselves feel good...
-
This might come as a shock to some people, but EMS does involve a little more than lung sounds and hearing BPs. If the deaf person can perform the other aspects of the job, then I wouldn't care if he or she was working on me. I know plenty of people who have no problem seeing, no problem hearing, no problem with any other physical aspect of the job but are beyond inept and still allowed to perform the job. I guess it all comes down to the individual for me.
Devin
I have to say i think being able to listen to lung sounds and getting a BP is very important..Most drugs before u can administer to a pt requires that you have a BP..Soo i really think if someone is deaf or HOH then they need to find some other type of work that isnt really dealing with people that need medical attention..

I don't know to be honest, I haven't gotten a serious of medics that were an inch apart and tested to see at what point are they to short. I will say that 4'8" wouldn't allow for the person to use the stair chair today, and if the patient codes they would have had to lifted onto the cot to do CPR effectively.
The shortest I can recall that I've worked with was 5'2" and while she only weighed in at 106 lbs., she could lift three times her body weight.
BTW: I'm only 5'7.5" <~~~have to throw in the .5" [/quo
I'm 5'4 and everyone else in the Corp towers over me..Soo i leave them to do all the lifting...
-
I don't have a problem with them on a bus. But they definitely have no business on an ambulance.
LOL LOL LOL.......Good one....
-
Also when you have a deaf tech how can they hear what the PT is complaining of...Also what about when Med Com is trying to give the deaf tech a med order..Its not going to happen and then the PT'S life is at a greater risk...I really dont think they should be on the bus..
-
Not to change the topic, but I've raised the same question about a min. height requirement.
Both tie into the same issue, how safe can it be with them operating on a day to day basis.
What do u feel should be the min height requirement for this job? I'm just curious to know because i'm not that tall myself...
-
They should had never to be allowed into the program. Nothng against disabilites by far, but part of the job decription is to be able to auscultate, communicate verbally, etc.. Pateint assement is based upon so many of our senses..
This was a bad deal to allow this.. the should had been placed into another division that they could perfom at.
Be sfe,

I agree with you totally...We had such problems with him..I also remember having him in my EMT class and he never did well..He didnt pass the last class final to be able to move on to take the state test.. He complained and made a big stink and they passed him along saying it was the fault of the instructor to have not have noticed that he wasnt doing well on his test. I don't know how he passed the state test. I saw him at the corp a few months after he passed the state test and a call came in for a sick male.. I asked him to do something and he didnt do it..i was starting to get upset as to why he was ignoring me and then i remembered he was deaf. Other members of the corp had problems with him for one he gave a nebulizer treatment without taking a BP first along with a nitro. Anyway to make a long story short the chief had to ask him to leave the corp..He resigned and that was it.
-
I would just like to know everyone opinion...I had someone in my ambulance corp who was deaf and wasnt able to take a BP or listen to breath sounds..
-
More info needed...Was their shift time over with? Was the other crew ready to respond? Too many unanswered questions.. :?
-
I personally dont like using the automatic BP cuff. I think u should first try to get it on your own and if you can't for whatever reason then use the automatic BP cuff...They are not always accurate..
-
All i can say is WHAT THE HELL...I have never seen a ekg that looked like that...Did the man have Parkinsons?

I know what you are going through..My honey tells me that i was doing a great thing by becoming a emt b and supported me all the way..I even went on to take the emt cc class which is 10 months long and he continued to support me through that..Now when it comes to me responding to calls i get all these little neg comments..it makes me nuts..He makes me feel like i dont spend enough time with him..I have a percentage i have to make each month with the ambulance corp..Its a struggle to make percentage because of him giving me a hard time..Time does not change anything..I hate being made to feel guilty for doing something i enjoy..Good luck..Let us know what happens.
