  1. Joseph the CPAT stand for Canidete Physical Agility Test this is a Certified test that is given across the country you can see videos if you go to CPAT.com, it's a pretty good test gets your heart rate up. Now you can google santa ana college fire academy and see the BIDDLE, that one tends to weed out the slugs and females. LA city and LA county require the CPAT, I think because they have to be more PC these days, but most other departments around the area use the Biddle.

  2. If your only 17, further your education before you get into the world of medicine. I mean this EMT thing is a cool hobby and all, you can even do it for free like some morons, but if you want a good foundation join the military, or get into a college RN program your so young the world is yours, and then you will be ready and exposed to what ever comes your way.

  3. What are you talking about the pack tett is cake, and the CPAT is a joke, Ive done both. Now the biddle on the other hand is hardcore most LA and orange county departments use that one physical agility test to weed out all the slugs, done that test too and passed with a good amount of time left.

  4. Dude don't waste your time being a nobody emt, go to RN shcool, I am guessing your a young person who has all the time in world to graduate from a RN program, and its big $$$$$ when you get out. After that you can travel the country and even work on an ambulance if you still want to as a CCT RN.

  5. To me, ALS is not exactly equal to "more education". You can have an ALS medic that went through a 6 month medic mill, or you could have an EMT that also has a masters degree. That's what I mean by more education. I am familiar with the OPALS study, and none of it's conclusions should really come as a suprse to anyone. Trauma is not really an area where ALS can make alot of difference, at least not right now. I was looking for a study that compared medics with degrees with medics that don't have degrees, and if there were any differences in patient outcomes. I got some good suggestions here, and I will follow up on them.

You don't need a study to answer that. Until medical directors change protocols and not fear any liability patient outcomes will stay the norm. I mean really we can't do a whole lot out in the field compared to hospital services and for very critical patients thatt is where they need to be, not with some medic who thinks he knows it all.

  6. Is this really a suprise to anyone EMS originated from Fire, plus Fire based ems does not work in all communities. I am a little bias however I do work in a fire based system, and it works very well where I live. EMS is just a steeping stone job and will never ever truly be a career, that is just that.

  7. Woah, there.

I know MY employer didn't ask if I were willing to do anything for the position. Who knows if his did.

YET, it seems like he's doing it just fine.

All he's done is fulfill his obligation and come to us for some advice (which indicates he's willing to continue fulfilling it).

And I know I'm young and maybe illusioned, but is that really how you guys would communicate with your wives...or is the poster being facetious (based on the first part of his post which sets the tone, I gather he's not).

Seems like that (mindset...not the actual words) are just asking for relationship problems.

Hey homeboy like you I to work in southern Cali, and yes when I went into my Chief's oral interview I said I would do anything this job, might throw my way, and yes if I had to partner up with some chick in the fire house so be it, 100 k is a 100 k no matter how you slice it. Until my significant other brings home the bacon then she can say anything she wants, but luckily shes cool with, but I don't have this current issue, the biddle takes care of that.

  8. Hey, Buddy I hate to tell you, that in your interview you said you are willing to do anything for this position, and or something along those ambitious lines, so guess what this is anything. So I suggest you tell your significant other until she makes 100k a year or something like that, that she get over it and let you do your job the best and fullest.

    best of luck

  9. Want to back those words, or just speak from your anus? You use same repeated comment without any explanation leads one to believe you must have failed one of their tests.

NREMT has and still endorses formal education. Without their persistence we would not be heading for accredited programs. You can thank the NREMT for this or is this one of their "scams" you adress? Validity of tests per academia and again wanting programs to meet such standards.

Yeah, a whopping $10 a year scam.. poor baby. Apparently, you don't know the costs of most professional health care organizations and again I doubt you know or read the scientific research and the presentations they have performed within EMS.

So your asinine statement makes no sense, obtain your degree and NREMT demonstrating you have met the minimal national standards.

    R/r 911

Chill out homeboy, I to have a two year degree, I just don't think we need the registry to pursue higher standards in this field. As long as people volunteer EMS will never go anywhere. Fire departments are the least of our worries, Do I think that I need a glow in the dark patch to tell an employer I worth an extra 50 cents an hour, No my degree and experience whould give me an extra 50 cents an hour or what ever low paying wage I so choose to go for.

  10. Complacency and sticking ones head in the sand in the face of the many issues that face EMS and leave us in a somewhat precarious position as a profession is of no help. I don't think anyone is saying they hate their job. Were that the case I doubt they'd be online posting on a forum such as this.

EMS (especially in the USA) is fractured, with far too many stakeholders, with their own agendas (not all of which are actually geared towards EMS) pulling it in various directions. You're correct, Fire is not alone in creating problems for EMS, but it is one of these stakeholders and significant for its overarching goal of promoting and maintaining the fire service. This fracturing more than anything else is what holds back education, wages and the establishment of EMS as a separate specialized field.

What you call whining, I'm sure others would call advocacy.

What are you talking about This Fracture?, wages are more than desirable in a fire based system.

  11. WOW this is a sorry attempt to get private ALS in the county, Iam suprised that the IAFF has not stepped in yet and tried to block this from happening. The current model they have is working just fine. I used to work on a CCT car as an EMT with an RN and we didn't even run that many calls in OC to justify our existance LOL (AMR). I guess if it creates more jobs in this current economy, more power to the privates.

  12. Interesting take. Is this based on an ethical standpoint of ethical egoism, or do you just have not sense of ethics whatsoever? Honestly, approaching life in this way is the cause of a great many issues and yet when this results in a lady dying on an escalator with people walking by, everyone is up and arms convinced that they'd never do that. Bullshit.

Relax homeboy, Iam just saying if I was a private medic I take the gift at hand, we tip people who cut and groom our hair for crying out loud and god knows they have more skills hours on the books then we do. I personaly can't take such a gift on duty since Iam at the will of the tax payers.

  13. This is one of the reasons that EMS is a stepping stone job, and not a career. The public has no idea what goes on in the EMS community, and just want public saftey in general, and yes we are public saftey in the minds of the average citizen. Until there is a change in the trend of how the average citizen sees EMS there will be no change. Even with two year degree Paramedics private companies will pay for the cheapest labor they can get away with. Also fast programs like this + Volunteers = stepping stone JOB. I personaly don't think this trend will end anytime soon in my working years.

  14. Actually it does affect us. The IAFF and fire departments like yours is on a nation wide quest of fire based EMS for all. It is NOT the best way to deliver EMS, however it is in the fire services best interest and is the agenda of your Union.

Funny you should mention that, I believe the compitetion between fire and privte make for excelent service, since niether wnat to be taken over by the other.
