  1. I don't understand the reason for the caption of the NJ emts Whinning. Yeah I think some may be over the top but who wouldn't be when

they are compassionant about something. These people that are upset about the Training Fund is very understandable but maybe some have

gone about it a little wrong. But NJ always finds the funds for what they want to do, you need to understand NJ politics and I hate to talk Politics. There is funding for policeman to be put on an extra 2 weeks to a month of overtime for each officer to sit out on the streets and pull us free citizens over because we aren't wearing our seat belts (because we need the government to protect us in the no state of nj)

Last week there was another funding for the police to sit out on the streets and check for cell phone usage while driving, seat belts on, and inspection stickers valid. Overtime for each officer! They go to any school for free and get paid. They need to keep us free citizens in line!

Don't get me wrong I totally believe in seat belts and I would wear my motor cycle helmet regardless of the law it's the fact that we have policemen in the middle of the road at night stepping out to catch you, give you a ticket and boom there is our training fund but the training fund has gone to ot! I have the deepest respect for any policeman anywhere, doing any type of job. I have two brothers that are both high up in the force, one here in my home town he's asst chief and my other brother is up there as a state policeman in md.

But I also have a brother in politics in my town thats also involved in running the ems, fire and police and the politics in this town are crazy nuts and I can complain because I voted. That is what was said to me is that you can't complain because they got voted in, WHAT just because certain people are in control don't mean that everyone voted for them! Joining the fire dept and amb squads together is the craziest idea we still need the training fund. They tell us that the tolls are to maintain the roads. Try riding around certain roads and see where the tolls go, not to the roads that's for sure. But I do believe that they could try and take a closer look at their budget and find some money for the fund. Most people can hardly afford to live but they want to volunteer and it does get costly to recert.

The training fund means nothing to me one way or the other we bill so therefore we aren't able to use it. So make it clear I'm not whining I'm just stating some facts that I have become privy to. I don't think threatening to quit is the answer, but try some other way to help pay then, maybe fund raising. A car wash your family can even get involved so if you're on duty sat set the car wash for that day.

I have to say my town has still been very good helping the emts with classes regardless of us not being able to use the NJ training fund.

There are a lot of hard working by that I mean volunteering emts in NJ and the fact of grouping everyone into the whining was offensive.

Just thought Id stand up for the non whining NJ emts.

  2. I truely don't see how this will help with treatment of the pt. Even if you see a liver bleed, I still dont understand how that will change the way that you ill treat someone in the back of the rig. It's not like we are going to be doing surgery in the back of the rig, I can see that you will be able to alert trauma team what you really have as a posed to just advising them of a rigid abd or anything like that, you'll have what is really wrong with the pt.

So if the thing works as good as maybe it should might not be a bad idea. But I haven't a company make equipment worthy of the bouncing and everything else that ems put equipment through. Even the computers have taken awhile, in my 23 years they have tried so many different gadgets but the back of the rig is a tuff place for the equipment. My oly concern is that the emts will be too busy using that instead of the orginial way that thy were taught especially with the special gift of touch!!!!

What state do you live in if you don't mind me asking, just curious.

Thanks and good luck with it! Keep me updated how things go with you and your new toy!

  5. holy cow! i read every entry with this one question that started 3 pages of entries over emts vs medics. that was horrible! people got picked on for there spelling, for how the sentences where written and judging them by that. i had to agree that yes in the rules spelling was mentioned but everyone makes mistakes and can't be perfect all the time. i know there is spell check and even on line dictionary which is my bible. i have always read the discussions with much enthusiasm but this discussion seem to put bls at als. i don't think that was the original intention but that is how it seemed to turn out. i thought this sight was here to support each other and learn from each other. i also thought we were to respect each other and not be so judgmental with the small stuff (such as spelling). there are strong feelings on each side and rightfully so, if you don't believe in what you are doing them you better get out. I am truly upset by all the small jabs that where taken. up until now i loved this site enjoyed my time on it, along with the people on it but now? -_-

  6. Hello Anna

Welcome to the field that after 23yrs I still find rewarding!!! You will learn constantly. I have kept the letters that I have received from the

over the years. Enjoy running calls and share your stories. Remember to share the bad as much as the good. You need to share a little tip from over the years.

  7. this one driver would drive so fast so crazy that we would be thrown around including our equipment. we would as him to slow down and never would. i would even try reporting him, but nothing worked. one day we were driving so fast a car pulled out in front of us and my equipment and myself went flying across the back of the rig. smashing my head and shoulder. i received a concussion and dislocated my shoulder and my good ems watch that was given to me for my 10 yr anniv was broken. you think he slowed down? not even the officers that had to explain why we where hurt made him slow down. i became an ems officer and he was the first order of business. slow down or stop driving. he stopped driving!!!.

i don't like driving, to many things to go wrong i'd rather take care of the pt. why we need to drive super fast i don't know. my brother drives the fire trucks and some have the engine cut out if you go too fast, he complains about that all the time. think he drives fast?

  8. That idea on GHB is an good idea, we have a large amount of use around where I live and the kids in the high school were buying the ingredients on line. Not that I am suggesting what paper to write but I just thought that as a medic that is something that would be dealt with and be very informative.

Another idea would be the greater use of air ambulances whether they are warranted or not for the increased use. I know the crashes have been discussed but the increase use, valid or not?

    good luck with your paper!

  9. ???????? study

Don't understand why they would even waist tere time doing such a study. But sounds like another reason to try and control us with more information on global warming. They must be running out of real information about global warming to report on.

  10. WE do the same thing with our second out truck and fire co flicker the lights just for a second. Our township cops have nothing to do with themselves at 3am because there is too many of them. They are in the fire and ems business anytime of day because there is way too many cops in our town talking on their phones and using their computers all at the same time mind you while they pull you over for talking one your phone. Anyway will where coming home from a call at 3am and doing nothing wrong, doing the speed limit no flashing lights to other squad nothing one one such night and a Lt pulled us over and when we asked him why his answer to us was BECAUSE HE COULD! It's cops like him that give all cops a bad name. I have grown to truly strongly dislike cops. That is coming from a long family of cops. My great-granddad was the chief in philadelphia and my granddad was captain of the motorcycle cops. My one older brother is Lt ready to be assist chief then chief of police in the town we live in in the next two years. My brother that is only two years above me is 2nd grade sarg in the maryland state police, he was a winslow policemen but there was no room for him too move us and he did like the political games there so he make the decision to go to the state boot camp and start all over again, him i'm proud, but he still plays the cop game. I can do it but you can't. He road a m/c for years without a license because he would pull out that badge would you or I be able to get away with that? Would you or I be able to talk on the phone and say it's business? No? Now I can truly say that my brother that is on line to be chief here doesn't do that. He plays by our rules. But he has to be the only cop that does that I know of. When we did flash our second truck we both got followed to the building they called our chief at 3 am and told him we were playing with the lights and sirens at 3am, he was going to give us a ticket but give us a break this time and let him to suspend us this time but there won't be a next time. We weren't suspend because the chief is cool he talked to all of us and we all had the same story and he wrote up the cop to his sarg. That made me feel good that he stood up for all of us against the cop even though the chief is a cop at his job. Some bad cops have given me a really bad taste for cops!!!!

  11. I need some advise on what to do. See about a year ago my chief and I had a disagreement over something that he wasn't suppose to be doing with the EMS budget money and I questioned him about it. He really didn't appreciate me questioning him over the money. He felt as chief he could do anything with the money at any time. Me as EMS Capt. felt I had every right to question him. I would have preferred to question him in his office, with only one other person there, but the chief felt that bringing up the budget in front of the other officers I would back down. Well I stood my ground in front of everyone else and things very heated. He became extremely angry at me in front of all the officers. He stated "we will talk about this later!" I said " no I think we should talk about this now" looking to my lt. and friend for help. She acted like I was talking about the sky was blue today and just sat there. No one wanted anything to do this helping me nor talking about the budget problem. So it was dropped and we moved on to the next item of business and I knew that my job as EMS Capt was done. When the meeting of the officers were done we all left and he walked up behind me and said I want to see you in my office right now. I wish I had a tape recorder, and I wish I know then what I knew then. I walked into that office and my Lt. came in behind me. So I thought, I had a friend on my side. I couldn't have been more wrong. He stated that I could no longer be EMS Capt. that was fine by me, but the real in the gut was I could no longer run ems calls. He felt that due to my illness I was becoming too dangerous on the street. Well I was a great EMT, I trained EMT's every junior wanted to run on my night, after they passed their test they would ride on my night and I would decide when they were ready to ride by themselves.

called the town ship and th man in charge of personnel stated that due to my illness I was too dangerous to run calls. Sound familiar?

So when I called the town ship for my records that my chief sent to them about my medical condition, they stated that all they received from him was a phone call stating that we had an argument an officers meeting then he changed then the guy from the town ship realise that that would leave them wide open for a law suite so the twp guy called my chief. my chief and my so called friend, my Lt who is a nurse told him to change it to a medical problem. So hence a medical problem was born and the twp wanted all my medical records and any all medications that I am taking. Who said I was taking medication? Who said I had any medical problem but the nurse who just so happened to be acting as my friend and taking me to the hospital several times and listened to me as I told the hospital what I was taking. The last time she was at the hospital and she was there I lied to them about what I was taking when she was in the room and when she left I told them and explained to them why and told them not to let her know what was going on due to hippa. I didn't want her to know. I came to find out that she told some one just 3 weeks ago all this time coming to the hospital even this last time I was in ICU at the beginning of the month that if I was to run in the back of her rig that I would kill some one. She feels that she is a much better emt then me and the person that she was telling this too started laughing saying to her that she never treats at least I always treated and knew how to talk to the hospital and knew when to fly the helicopter. She needless to say go very anger with her. Back in the winter we had a very drunk man hit a tree and the steering wheel. He broke his femer and that's all she and another nurse was concerned about. But I happened to be Capt so I thank God over ruled them. I called the for the helo and they both got all over me saying that our local hospital can handle that. I told them to check his stomach that it's getting very ridig'd they totally missed that just looking at his blooding nose and that fact that he thought he could walk on his broken femur and how funny it would be and they kept up the fact we didn't need the helo. They even tried to get the chief to recall the helo. He tried but thankfully county at the time wouldn't allow the fire chief to over ride the ems chief. Then the paramedics came and over road all of them and went along with me and told them I made a good call. Shut them right up! Everytime she says I'll kill some one in her rig I remind her A) it's not her rig and B) remember the truck mvc and you thought we didn't need the helo?

Anyway back to the Question. I go see my twp guy tomorrow, I'm taking some one with me for starters, But what should I say to this total waste of air? I want to see my file this I know. I know there is no file. The chief never had me sign anything and I know from the twp idiot that he didn't receive anything. I did get a letter from my doc though clearing me to run. my doc said that would be a

like twp you can't stop me now thing. so anything I should say? Ask?

Thanks for your help and for listening!!!!!! :gun:

  12. I totally agree, in m fire co my officers use to start every year out saying the same thing and that they are going to change it.

But I find that each year they are the biggest offenders when it comes to not wearing gear. But I'm just as guilty I wear the jacket

try the helmet but I would take it off because there wasn't room. But exam gloves no I never wore exam gloves, I keep a pair of

ems black gloves. But we are never dressed right for the situation. So the only thing protected right was my hands. yicks!!! that

sad. I need to do better at protection myself. Thanks for the post!

  13. Dispatchers have a difficult job in my humble opinion, they don't know what the patients are trying to fully say over the phone.

Some people have a very hard time trying to tell people what is wrong.then add a phone between them and it's even more difficult

Some people don't call it's a third party caller and then it's whole different ball game. In todays world of every one suiting everyone

else the question comes up about running hot a lot.

I this world of having everything right now, the dispatchers have to transfer the information they get from a couple of seconds to a

couple of minutes to the EMT's and then together they need to decide if they should run hot or not. So going to a call here we run

hot responding to a call every time. Then after we evaluate a patient and spend time with that patient and will continue to spend time

with that patient while transporting them we decide not to run hot, no lights or sirens but since you are continuing to be with that

patient and reevaluate then at any given time if they need to they can go lights and sirens at while en route. So no need

to run hot on every call when with what EMT's are taught to always know whats going on with your patient! Knowing that then we don't

need to run lights and siren and even air horns to every call.

  14. Thats all well and good to think that you can or want is a better word to get the volunteers out of the service of ems.

but they are the back bone of ems and many communities has relied on volunteers. They take the same classes as the paid and go through the same training as paid. This is crap the way that people talk about the volunteers. Yes more work and less complaining would be the order of the day. Not all volunteers are siren hungry lazy emts.

But if there was one thing to change about the ems I feel that we need to be more professional whether we are paid or volunteer. How we carry ourselves and talk and treat patients is so very important in any level of training. I don't care if you have a master if you mistreat patients all our hard work to change the view of ems will go out the window. So lets keep those sleeves rolled up and keep working to a better more professional people caring ems.

  15. hey firedoc

too bad we dont live close to each other i was in the hosp myself fluid around the heart and between the lungs and ribs closasping the lung. in for over a week and then home for 2 and back in. i did everything the hosp said myself but boom back in again and they don't have a clue of why nothing was working. those steroids are horrible and make me horrible to be around. finally this weekend i could breath with it feeling like my husband was sitting on my chest. no no just sitting and crushing my with a sword in the the side.

amen i can breath and i thing the roids are finally working!

congrads on not smoking i know how hard that is i watch half of my family struggle with the same thing and not win. i thank god i never started so i dont have that problem. just lupus that has a terrible mind of its own.

good luck doc and ill be thinking of ya!!!! :o

  16. Here in NJ we had 3 earthquakes just recently with in the past couple of months that I'm sure most people missed all together and we had a tornado run through my old neighborhood when i lived there and some homes were ruined. Thank god ours was missed but the local shop rite lost its roof and was shut down but the local fire co. people were in a panic. So the thought of having something happen is a very real thing even in a small town in south jersey where people think nothing will happen. Thats crazy mother nature can strike anywhere any time.

So these be ready bags and stuff are a great idea and we all should take heed and take examples from them to suit our needs.

I have taken a little from each quote and wrote it down to get right on it,because shameful to say we don't have on here, we did in our old house but at times it seem my illness rules this house and i need to change that and get back to the way it should be where i rule and these safety features are put in place. Thanks for the reminder how important these things are!

  17. I really liked your post about the jobs, i have seen my husband from the time we got married 23yrs ago to now he has changed jobs and path at least 3 times. always he's dream job would have been to be a fire fighter but very hard to get around here at times esp is your a white male. It just seemed like I would have a easier time getting that job then him and finally age now has made it not possible to get his dream job. Just he's recovered and has gotten a job not even close to fire fighting on a company. He is the first responder and fire fighter for his job but he's also the only one there half of the time. Day shift he has visitors and needs to be on the look out for them but on the night shift he's there all by himself no one till they come to relieve him in the am. So anything can happen to him and no one know till 6am when he's getting relieved. A very thing for me every time he is in on the night shift.

We have always said some jobs no matter what will stay around. They have too. Paramedics, emts, pharamacy's and every one that works in it. Health care workers are well needed. No matter will be here to stay as we get older and people keep getting sicker then that creates job safety,! I myself know that all too well, I'm a health care worker that has been stricken down by a non curable desease and at time unfort, i need the ems system. This year it was called twice unbeknown to me. Had a seizure and diff breathing that i passed out. I then woke up at the hosp. i could have used it just recently when i couldn't breath and heart rate was 20. But pride and I'll never willingly call 911 I drove myself to hosp with violent chest pain and sob. So I can see where these jobs will stay around no matter what!

  18. This lifting into the ambulance kits are cool and all but is't lifting into the rig one of the easies things

to do once the pt is loaded. For stryker it is to me, the carrying up and down the steps and such is the hard part, with half the stretcher in the rig thats the lightest and easiest on me at 53 110lbs. i do all my lifting and did like the side of the stretcher till we go the stryker but the stretcher still helps a little with the lifting up to get ready for the rig, except one thing the stryker stands pretty high and for a shorty like myself getting it all the way up to rig level is a challenge.

We issue everyone one of the back braces like the guys at lowes and home depo uses to help with

the back!. Some one told me that the back braces causes back injury. I haven't seen it but if anyone else knows of something I would be happy to hear about it, before some one get hurts on my account!!

i also seen in hawaii the back door is all on unit and slides down like the doors on a fire truck but much big. One big back door!

  19. The problem with using it is that we leave too much open to the dispatchers. If they miss understand what the patient is saying then the

out come can be devastating. Some people just aren't good at explaining whats wrong with them while others have learned how to be

very good at it. This puts a lot on the dispatchers to make the right call when they already have enough resp on them and then you have

the dispatchers that are like some in the ems, not for the right reasons and is playing with fire.

This is just my opinion from years of experience in the ems field and human nature.

  20. There is no place in ems for someone who acts like that, makes me sick to my stomach that someone even thinks that is cool!. I agree

with the everyone here and if someone does feel it's cool you should find a different line of work to do and not subject the poor people

that call 911 to you and your need for control. a medic that slams the narcarn or takes his time to give the pain medication is no better

a mental abuser. So lets go on a leave and try a new career.

Here's to all the people in ems for right reasons and make someones worst time of their life a little less stressful!!

  21. I live in nj and the last snow fall we had like that back in 2002 we had two people who ran the ambulance and rescue assoc out in a parking lot like that and doing the same exact thing. but they didn't get off as easy. They ripped off the bumper of the rig. The under carrage of the little rescue that the town had given them 75,000 for a refurb. And it was met with just through it in the back of the veh and we'll deal with it on monday and be able to explain that we need some really good 4 x 4's for running calls. But the people dept and the fire dept and the sister co with the same equip as them got through the snow without a scracht. so have fun explaining that. no excuse even for nj!

There favorite statement was it's better to ask for forgiveness after then to beg for the use of it prior to. That was never an excuse then and seeing this video reminds me of what a couple of people portray the nj ems system as something we all wanted and hoped that our system needs some real role models, for the juniors coming up I would love to be all their role models of what is expected of them as an emt. an honor to take care of someone at their worst and that person be you. step up nj and be the best!

  22. I am placing this in this section for a reason, Recently I have got to see this happen and it worries me to a point and it puzzles me to a point. Ok here is a scenario.

You are working the rehab unit and you get a new admit a 64 yo there for rehab for a broken him and wrist. A new diagnosis of skin cancer and no other history. The past month this lady has been getting up walking with therapy and doing well until...This ladies family comes into the room and starts Oh momma God is getting ready for you have cancer and you are going to die. Every day for a month this man came into the room saying the same thing... He was the RP even social services administrator and nursing staff talked to him about his behavior. A week later the lady had a major decline in condition when she started refusing to go to therapy she refused her treatments and then a month later a vital woman that was up walking doing self care was gone.

But my question is was the constant hearing you are going to die mom do you all think that is possible that she just gave up cause they gave up on her? I don't know if you any one that reads this has heard of Dr Randy Paush (not sure if that how you spell his name) but the point is he gaves lots of motavational speechs...and When dealing with this a quote he said came to mind. When people quit pushing you and giving you hell to go past where you are then that means they have given up on you. The human psyche is a powerful thing.

I totally believe that that is what happened. I have seen it and when someone is holding on and you go to there bedside and tell them it's ok you can go and that's it they are gone.

I have lupus and sjogrens that is a sister to lupus so a double wammy on my joints and now my orgins. I just spent a week in the hosp. Icu and then pcu. well if it wasn't for my husband being there at the worst times and just letting me know he's there and things will be ok, i don;t know things were pretty bad at times. so yesi believe those people instead of incourgaging her they drug her don't and she no longer believed in what she was doing that was working. she believed in them and there is the proof. so sorry. we need people to keep us up esp when we are sick. sick with a long term illness mostly! so keep that in mind also. as soon as someone gets a long term illness that doesn't take us fast enough that's it this world doesn't have time for us! lets all remember that everyone needs to be encouraged.
