I am very sorry to hear of your loss. My company lost three stellar flight crew members in December, just six short months ago. They where on a search mission to find a missing hunter, they found the lost man, and where hovering, flying in the general area so the ground rescuers could locate him. It was a shock and a big loss, the first deaths our company experienced. It is hard. But you will heal with time. Feel free to rant or vent. Send me a PM if you would like too.

It's hard to belive six months have passed and now our industry looses 3 more stellar crew members........

I agree that there is often too much negativity. There are more constructive ways to point out short-comings and problems than bashing and name calling. That's why I don't post often even though I see a number of threads that I'd like to respond to. I'm also careful in chat about who's there because of how certain people act.

I'd like to challenge the ones who are so negative. Would you say what you do on here to a coworker face to face? Would you say things the way you do to your supervisors, medical directors, ect? Would you talk to your own family the way you do to the people on here?

We all have the post that we have the knee-jerk reaction of "Duh!" The nice thing about forums and chat is that you can re-read what you've typed and edit out extreme negativity and judgmentalness before you post it.......IF you want to.

I realise spenac , you are describing a very rural service. Somewhere in that 3000 sq. miles there has to be some industry. If you approached them and explained in detail, your predicament, perhaps they could apply some pressure to the county gov't. After all, they are in business and should understand that to function properly, some influx of cash is required. It would indeed be to their benefit to have professional, full time ALS service and I'm sure they haven't got a clue as to how you run now.

Jake I see and feel what Spenac is getting at here. I serve these area's every day/night I work. Small Rural Counties with just the County seat centrally located serving a vast area from one location with a hand full of Volunteer units available..... That's why we fly so much in these area's. Then we get slammed with the "over use and abuse of Helicopters" well what do you do when the only ALS response available is coming with that air craft?

Happens too much too often. Spenac if you get a good response out of this write up a plan of action I can give you SEVERAL county seats to present it to!

I just can't understand why it's not okay to not have the drive that some people have. I could have been a smart ass and not asked why Dust hasn't started medical school yet if he's so keen on not being complacent with where you are in life. I applaud that he's gone so far, but not everyone wants or needs that.

As much as he reviles me for being where and who I am, I refuse to feel bad about it. I will progress as it fits into MY life, MY means, and MY schedule. I happen to love every facet of the other things I do, even though they don't fall under EMS. And those of you that have families know that your children and their education comes first - that's part of being a parent. My kid's finally in college so I can concentrate on myself.

I just think it's a little narrow-minded not to accept that people are different, and shouldn't be put down for what they've done, or according to some - failed to do.

Dust, if it makes ya feel good to keep slamming me for being an uneducated, undereducated, useless, lowly EMT, you go right ahead. Sticks and stones...

Uh huh. Like I said, I saw this coming. Sure, I got a little annoyed, so here it is again, after a good night's sleep. I have heard this story before, many times, from many different EMT-B's, and it's always the same. It's always the medics who missed the life threatening bleed because they were too focused on the IV, and it always ends with an oversimplified version of fluid replacement with Normal Saline for hypovolemia is inadequate without bleeding control. Anyway, I'm really glad to hear that once again, having a keen eye and all that trumped professional, physician directed training and education.

Now that I said that, after this bleed was noticed, you immediately applied pressure at the femoral pulse point right? And constant pressure was held until surgical intervention at the trauma facility? Or did you just give up and tie a tourniquet? Just wondering how it turned out.

Is it just me, or does anyone else see something wrong here? IF you have heard this same ole story time and again……then WHY I ask you is it happening TIME AND AGAIN?

AND as far as what happened, thanks to Early Activation an Aircraft had already been launched and was 5 minutes out. What was a mention of “cancel that air craft this one can go by ground” just became a “thank GOD this one needs to go straight to the vasculiar surgeon”. As for what we did, it was the Popliteal artery BEHIND the Knee so yes direct pressure was applied the knee was bent to raise the laceration ……

And as for YOU Asysin……well I will refrain from what I REALLY want to say out of respect for others…

I made the clerk mad. He said I had too many books pulled and was sitting there for too long. I told him I had driven 2 hours and at the price of the books I would pull as many and sit as long as I darn well pleased until I decided which one I wanted. I made my choice paid $ 37 and some change for it then I sat my self BACK down and continued to read. I figured if he was gonna call me a B*@# i had better live up to it!!

I am sorry if my medics failed to notice. I didn’t do it! I did not ask for it to happen that way! I wish it could have been different, and for their sake I wish they would have been the ones to notice BUT THEY DIDN’T!! I never said or insinuated that they where bad medics. I never gave the presence that they couldn’t do their job with out me. I just was going with the flow of Mistakes can and do happen, and in this case I caught it. If you read back over all the other postings, you will see where Jess started with the “questions” all I did was include that I had used this approach not to question my medics ability but to just ask the obvious that was being over looked.
