  1. Yeah, true. Look at the cops. They give them guns, but society still raises hell everytime they use it. "Why didn't you just shoot him in the leg?" or "He only had a machete, so it's not fair to shoot him!"

Its not just guns anymore, now its tasers too. Every time someone dies from being tasered, it makes front page news. They fail to mention the pre-existing condition of the deceased that lead to the death.

  2. My girlfriend comes from a family thats very involved in the fire department, somehow though, she never caught that bug. She hates my hours and gets pissy when my pager goes off. I've just learned not to talk about work around her, or anything that has to do with medicine. lol. We've been together for 2 crazy years.

  3. I've only stopped 3 times in my time as an EMT. Once was b/c I heard the call dispatched and it was literally less than a quarter mile down the road that I was on and it was in my way. lol. I was the first "responder" on scene and assessed the situation and held c-spine until the FD arrived. The patient was riding her bike and was hit by a car. No helmet. I had 2 RN's at the scene and they were basically worthless, I asked one of them to get me a pulse so that I have something to tell the medic when it arrived and she just stared at me like I was from Mars. :?

The second time I stopped was when I was at the beach and a few cars in front of me, someone had t-boned a motorcyclist and he flipped over the handle bars. Once again I just told him to lay still, I left his helmet on, had my buddy hold c-spine and I got a set of vitals and did a quick trauma assessment as the medic rolled up.

The third time was I just stopped one night b/c someone had hit a deer and it was in the middle of the slow lane quivering. I stopped and blocked the lane off and waited for PD to arrive and terminate it.

I won't stop if there is already emergency equipment on scene. In my car, I only have some gloves and a very basic first aid kit.

  4. So..... Your an emt and use your car to do police work? How is traffic control even EMS's problem?

Through the volunteer fire department we work with the police to do scene control at car wrecks and fire scenes. Unless I'm at the station, I don't live close enough to the station to make the ambo from my house. I've made the ambo from home only a few times, so by going directly to the scene and helping out with traffic control, I can still be of assistance.

We're called Fire Police. Its mainly an East Coast thing. PA, MD, and NJ maybe?

  5. Ya what they said and...

Have your Pt. straighten thier arm. Even palpate your own brachial right now with your arm slightle bent. Now straighten your arm right out and palpate it again....much easier hey!!

I always tell my patients the straighter they have thier arm the better I can hear. I find this proves true with the NIBP on our Lifepak, we get less false readings with a straight arm.

We've had so many problems with the NIBP on the Lifepak, I just don't even use it anymore.

  6. Not case in these instances. These were just good little catholic girls. I do understand some block things such as rape out and on rare cases girls have gotten pregnant when they let there boyfriends rub against them and the semen made it in. But most cases they made decision to have sex and don't want mommy and daddy to know that there good little catholic girl is now going to hell.

Everyone knows that the girl can't get pregnant if she's on top...

  7. I have red lights on my vehicle. No my insurance doesn't know. My lights are registered with the State Police and we cannot use them while responding to the scene, they are strictly for marking my vehicle while at the scene. In our SOP's it states that we must respond to the station and then take a unit to the scene, unless the scene is directly on your way to the station. However a handful of us have training with the local and State Police and work with them when called to handle traffic control, and thats the reason for the lights.

  8. I think that each and every call is different and there cannot/shouldn't be a set way of doing things such as running Code 3. Especially with neonates, while there is a high level of care that is on board, that will only get you so far. Sometimes the one thing they need is to be at the receiving facility before their time runs out.

  9. Hmm...well the other day I was doing my beginning of shift check of my unit and noticed that the lightbar didn't work at all. Shocked

Then another time I was in one of our older units and when I went to put my drink into the cup-holder the entire thing fell right through into the dash!!!

There have been other minor things such as the handle on the back of the stretcher that controls the head position getting stuck.

Just to add to my previous post, the lighbar on the same unit broke again the other day when I was trying to run emergent through holiday traffic in our town :x

It was defiantly on when I started out, but we blew a fuse by the time we arrived on location. :?

  11. This is a really good idea!! ;) lol.

But seriously, I would have my employer set up a scholarship fund to help pay tuition to put EMT's and others at the company through medic school who otherwise couldn't afford it. If the company invests just a small amount of money to help with the costs of putting someone through school, in the end the company wins b/c they will have another ALS provider :)

  12. Sorry Ruff, I never meant for what I said to come off as me stating your views. My apologizes.

In other news...the other day at my private EMS gig, I got to stabilize a hip fracture which was cool since it was the only real "work" that I've done in awhile :D
