Typical hours/shift?

I was wondering what the typical week (or 2 week) shift cycle is like for EMTs. I know the shifts and hours are unusual and long. I'd really appreciate someone sharing this info.

This would be for Ontario by the way.

Ontario does not have EMTs. Shifts for Paramedics vary by service. One common one seems to be two 12 hour days, two 12 hour nights, four days off.

First off there is no such thing as an EMT in Canada, The bar has been raised please agnowledge that.

Secondly what these guys are trying to say is Paramedics for most part have no "standard schedule". I work rural 5 days a week 24 hours a day paid on call. In the urban service I am involved with you give your availability for the following month and they will schedule you where you fit.

Look for the service that serves the area you want to live in and ask them how thier schedule is formatted, that is the best way.

24 Hour Shifts

1 Day On, 1 Off, 1 On, 2 Off, 1 On, 1 Off, 1 On, 4 Off, Rinse/Repeat

If you work in a busy area and are awake the entire shift, you're just a zombie on your day off.

Bunch more examples:

Some have 1 On, 1 Off, 1 On, 1 Off, 1 On, 4 Off

Some are MWF, every other Sun 12p - 12a...a T,Th, Sa version too

M-F 6am - 2pm

Sun-Wed 4pm - 2am

MWF every other Sun, 6am-6pm

I've heard of 15 hour on-call shifts, too...but those might not be on a set schedule.

Actually ACP (Alberta College of Paramedics) still has us listed as EMR, EMT-A and EMT-P(Paramedic) So there are still EMT's in Canada. We do train to CMA's levels, but our governing body still hasn't changed the titles
