Monterey County, CA medics making $180,000/yr?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know about payrates for Monterey county for both EMTs and Medics?

I've been hearing a lot of rumors lately, as there's been a lot of union drama up there and talks of striking after AMR pulled out of their contract and a new company came in.

I've heard EMTs make $60,000/yr and medics around $100,000...then someone else (most likely wrong) was insisting they made $180,000...maybe with a LOT of overtime? I don't know.

Just know it's a lot more than LA at $8 - $10/yr for EMTs...

(Edited for spelling)

Hmm,,, lets see, Earthquakes, mudslides, firestorms, your occasional race riot, global warming, Socialist republic gun ban state, ... combined with one of the highest cost of living in the country, naaa I'm not interested in CA.

Ohh and I think that $180,000 is a STRETCH.

Actually, aside from the occasional natural disaster, Monterey is a great place to visit. The cost of living is probably a bit higher than other places, but not that much more than the rest of CA.

The numbers quoted can't be coming from a base salary. Even with $7-8/hour, it's possible to make $50K/year, but do you really want to work that much?

Westmed took over the 911 contract from AMR a while ago. Westmed however, appears to have given the county a grossly distorted view of their capability to handle the contract. According to the latest rumors (and that's all they are so far), Westmed has asked the county for $200.000 last month to make payroll and an additional $1.5 million for its operating budget in addition to extended response times.

In addition, the union representing Westmed employees, the IAFF, has asked the employees to take a 30% pay cut (also rumor).

Well, I know the grossly distorted view of their capability to handle the contract came from ridiculously inaccurate reports given to them by AMR about call volume and such (this is what i've heard anyway, but seemed verified).

Apparently, at LEAST one area gets only 9 calls per YEAR...but they still need to staff year-around crew...at the very least 4 employees, plus whatever costs to keep station house/supplies/utilities going.

I'd be interested in hearing any other rumors, as I've been hearing all kinds of stuff from people lately and some of it just seems far out.
