morphine + tramal combination

Good day, will a morphine and tramal combo have any bad interaction/side effect when given to a pt with severe pain... for example a pt with femur fracture. Anyone with a link to a study/research?

No scenario and not a school assignment. Just a newbie question.

Thanks

Wrap3pull2, you can have all kinds of potential problems with morphine administration to include; resp depression, altered mentantion, hypotension, nausea and vomiting, itching, and all kinds of adverse reactions. As with any med you must be ready for adverse reactions. Do you mean morphine and trauma? I am not big on giving trauma patients morphine. I like fentanyl, less chance of hypotension and the half life is much shorter than morphine.

Take care,

chbare.

I agree, I am not a big fan of M.S. on trauma, but remember you should have Narcan on hand just in case. Fentyl is a much wiser analgesic to use. I always find it amusing, to see old "war movies" where they administer M.S. then watch them die... well, that part may be true...

I think he refers to the pain medication drug Tramadol, sold as Tramal or also as Contramal.

Tramadol in a sintetic partial agonist of opioid receptors; it also inhibits serotonin and noradrenalin reuptake; so its pain decreasing effect is actually due to two separate mechanisms.

The problem of administering both tramadol and morphine (or fentanyl or any other full opioid receptor agonist) is that morphine will find part of the receptors already binded with tramadol: since tramadol is less powerfull than morphine your overall pain controll effect will actually be less!

So it really doesn't make sense to give both of them! :D
