The county service I work for actually carries both. We have the v-vac in the airway bag, and we have a battery suction unit. We mainly use the v-vac for those oops calls when we enter for a pt with complaint of head ache and find pt on the floor unresponsive and vomiting. We use the v-vac to clear airway, if it is small amounts of emesis we are OK but large amount it gives us time to run back to the bus to get the battery unit. It is also a good backup to the battery unit if for some unseen reason it should fail...

v-vac is in our first responder truck kits (im trying to push for a battery one though) and the trucks carry the battery ones but a back up v-vac. Yes the v-vacs are shite, but better than nothing with our patients airways clogging up, found that they are damn painful on the hands though as opposed to the resque-vac.
