In NYS the DOH will stop you at random at the hospital once you have dropped off your pt or if one of the privates are parked there doing nothing.

Was it really that bad, were ambulances so poorly stocked, that inspections like what you're describing became necessary?

I don't think so, at least not for the volleys. Some of the privates could get pretty skimpy on supplies. They would also only check state certified ambulances which meant that you met the minimum requirements to be called state certified. Most volleys were state certified and got stickers that look like this:

When I am a Resident, I want a button that says "Supervised by ERDoc"

That's a great idea. I think I might have to have some printed up for our residents.

We have a "critical operational check" which is a quick one minute check to make sure the defibrillator passes the self test/has pads, that suction works, there is a tank of oxygen etc in the ambulance and that is has wheels attached, enough fuel, lights work etc. This is completed at the start of each shift.

Then there is the "vehicle readiness check" which is the larger, more encompassing check of things like quantities of consumables and drugs etc which needs to be completed once per day (which is usually at the beginning of a shift)

We have daily check sheets for each shift. We also had our compartments sealed so that should have meant that everything was there. On the weekend, we would pop the seals and inventory the whole truck.

Now, they took off all of the seals, and cut down the sheet. Of course, it doesn't help when everyone is just drawing a line down the length of the sheet and signing off on it. What's the point of even bothering to check if that's all you're going to do?
