We can go back and forth and cite USSC cases, and even claim that someone does not have the right to impose their values on anyone else. I actually agree with that statement. BUT-As I have said before, YOUR (not you personally) rights end at the point when they infringe on mine or those of my family's. Besides the ultra left, few would ever disagree with the notion that exposing kids to porn is a bad idea. That would include having my kids in a public library and seeing some pervert surfing porn sites. If you want to look at pron, look at it private. Nobody is denying you that right. This is not a free speech issue. Also said here- just because something is "legal", it does not make it "right"- at least in terms of the opinions of the vast majority of the country. Why should I have to change my library wandering habits or take my children around the area where porn might be viewed. I know that this is protected stuff but why do I need to alter my visit to the library when all the library needs to do is have the computers sequestered or set up in a secure area of the library. Put the computers for the adults in a big room and make it off limits from children. The supreme court have not made putting limits on where porn is viewed. at least not YET! Keet this area kid free. At least we could then turn a disgusting situation into a potential positive. i too am of the thought process that someone who feels a need to surf pron in a public library where children are often present is a danger in my opinion. What is going thru their freaking heads that makes them think this is ok. Just because the supreme court says it's a first amendment right does not make it a good idea for this type of behaviour to be allowed. We put barriers up all the time on things that we feel inapprorpriate. WE have red light districts, we have entertainment districts where the adults go to drink fight and act stupid. I have no issues with putting the computers for all the adults in a locked room if it makes sure that my children and others children don't get exposed to this garbage. Call me paranoid or say that I'm sheltering my kids, but you know what, that's my job. I am to shelter my kids from negative things until they are old enough to have discernment. Is this a personal opinion - yes it is. It's mine only. I do not take my child to the library because I don't use the library. But if I did use the library I'd be there with my child and helping him get the books he wants. I don't think that I should have to do a recon mission prior to our visit so I can scope out the porn free zones. Public libraries and public places which receive tax dollars are supposed to be safe places for EVERYONE and should not allow one group preference over others. Simple precautions to keep the stuff we are talking about away from young eyes is all I'm asking. Is that too much to ask? What I have one question on is where are the adults watching this stuff at at the library in question? Out in plain view or in a area designated as a computer area? Survival of the fittest. If you (not you specifically) FAIL as a parent to properly educate, socialise, and protect your children, that is nobody's fault but your own. I don't understand how the presence of nudity makes something "dangerous" or otherwise unacceptable. If your children are raised well, they won't have a problem with it. But if you just saddle them with the same 14th century puratainism that we were saddled with, you are at fault for the damage. Despite what we were taught in paramedic school, kids ARE just little adults, and should be given credit for that potential. But if you meant to argue FOR those limitations, then yes, I agree. It's the 69, reverse cowgirl, doggy, carb/protein shake, creampie, eating out, ganging, DP, sucking, and slobbing in the nude; we're referring to. It's legal (it really isn't; NYC has it all wrong) to watch porn in the library but you can't be nude in the library. Either way, it shouldn't be allowed in the library. Yeah, and it's legal to have sex with a 16 year old, but illegal to have naked pics of her/him. Society is fcuked up. I get that. And that was my point. Any politician wasting his/her time and my money debating any of this should be burned alive. I got no problem with naked people in the library. We're so worried about our kids seeing nudity, but then we send them to school to take showers with a room full of kids, while a perverted coach or two watches. It's time to grow up.
