I am registered for my EMT-B and I am looking for a job as an Emergency Room Tech at my local hospital. Is EMT a requirement for all techs or can I take an alternative school such as nursing since I deal alot with patient contact?

I am registered for my EMT-B

Please clarify what you mean by "registered FOR" your EMT-B. Are you registered in a class for it, or do you already have your NY State DoH "Cert"?

Is EMT a requirement for all techs or can I take an alternative school...?

Depends on the facility. Some use people already trained as EMT-Bs, some as EMT-Paramedics, some do in-house training for the position, or exclusively use those trained as Emergency Room Technicians. Some don't hire any EMT-B or EMT-Paramedic personnel at all for any hospital jobs, relying on people trained to one of the levels of nurses.

To become a RN you must take a Nursing Program from an accredited college. If your talkng about alternative schooling; there are some.

Go to www.excelsior.edu (Excelsior College) Albany, NY.

You can wave all clinical rotations and take only the required class and all the Nursing Components with life experience. I'm pretty sure that an ERT doesn't qualify. An ERT is a CNA with a little more skills but a CNA is nationally and state recognize. Even EMTs do not qualify for the exemption.

Give them a call or an email to find out more: 8886472388 or excelsior.college@excelsior.edu.

Good luck...
