  1. In a way, it's a weeding out process. The ones who say "hey, I'm more than just an EMS wanker" and set out to prove it to themselves are the ones who are better for the profession anyways, USUALLY.

You don't try to prove to yourself that you're the an above average provider? How do you motivate yourself to go higher? I suppose people can have different systems for it...

I came in knowing to NOT be like the toolbags that wore their Squad shirts, BDU pants, and boots to high school

I don't want to prove it to myself by just taking classes and educating myself... I want to catch those little things that are tricky, to make sure my partner, my bus, and myself, although not necessarily in that order, make it home after my tour, and hell, why not even a pt. or two  8)

I don't see how furthering my education is proving anything.....its doing right by my pts.

Sorry Bro, gotta disagree with you on this one. I am not in EMS to prove anything.

I am here to do what I love, and do so professionally, and when it is called for, compassionatly.

A Wacker tries to prove to others what he is or isn't.

A Professional does his his job, does it well, and lets his work stand for itself.

  3. LOL! Yeah, that's what his e-mail signature says. Cocoa Beach must be a real hotbed of SWAT stand-offs these days, eh? The neighbourhood sure went to hell when I left! :D

PM me his name. I was just up at CBFD Sta 51 today talking with the Training Capt.

Hmmm... I HOPE it's not gone! It was right there on A1A at the southern end of Cocoa Beach, maybe just outside of the city. There is a huge Air Force Space Laboratory building on the west side of the highway, facing the ocean, and in the median in front of it are about a dozen rockets and missles on static display. It was there last time I was there, which was 1996. I guess they may have done something with them in the last ten years, but that would totally suck! They were famous! They always showed them on the "I Dream Of Jeanie" show, haha! Ask around about them.

Just did some Googling. The only thing I could even find on it is this uber old pic...

    PatrickAFBBOMARC.jpg

    I hope it's still there!

From where that pic is taken it looks like it is facing the AFTAC (Air Force Technical Applications Center), and is now the Northbound lanes of A1A, or is where a telescope is.

I just passed by the AFTAC today on the way home from Cocoa Beach, and it is DEFINATELY not there.

  4. I ran across the CBFD "Deputy Fire Chief/Tactical Medical Commander" on another forum and got excited

    Tactical Medical Commander :?

Meh... skills are overrated. I am more concerned with the firemedics in busy, urban systems that are horribly undereducated to be performing the skills that they are so proficient at.

I think only Cocoa, and parts of Melbourne and Palm Bay could even come close to that, at least here.

LOL! Actually, I moved to Merritt Island just before the the fourth Gemini mission, then lived there, Cocoa Beach, and Titusville through Apollo X. We bailed and came back to Texas just before Apollo XI. I went to school with Ron (Veronica) and Jon Di Minna of Ron-Jon's fame. But I finished high school in Texas. Cocoa Beach is still where I consider myself "from" though.

Last time I was in Cocoa Beach, I talked to the manager of Ron Jon's, and she didn't even know there really were people named Ron and Jon, lol. I think they retired rich to Australia years ago. When I was still living there, Ron Jons was about a mile farther south and was about the size of a small convenience store. I can't believe what an international phenomenon that place became.

I was just talking to somebody the other day about the rocket display on A1A just outside of PAFB, right there between CB and SB.

Boy Bro, did you just date yourself with that one!

The only time I go to Ron-Jons is to pick up tourists, or take my friends from up North there. Talk about overpriced, even with the local discount.

I'm trying to think of the rocket display you are talking about, but I just can't remember it. It may be gone. I mean, a half-century ago, that was new, things deteriorate with age! 8)

  5. You know, I have used several models and The more expensice littmans a great, but they are more expensive. I recently found the littmann select in the firehouse supply closet and put it into service on the ambulance, it has worked for me better than several of the more expensive models. I believe that it is due to the tuning ability, but all I know is I love that stethoscope.

What I am getting at is more $$$ does not always mean that it will work well for you, if you have a way to try a couple of models, maybe someone you work with has one, do it, but remember that something that works great for others just might not be the correct fir for you.

Sorry, but I am NOT going to post anything else on these forums, until you prove you are not Alan Rothenberg, THEE Injury Lawer.

  6. Yeah, I know you understand, Bro.

I'm just trying to squash these references that lead to the perpetuation of the misconception that the only difference between an EMT and a Paramedic is a drug box. If people come here and read that, they believe it, and that is killing us.

Of COURSE there are differences.....EMTs carry the pt, Medics don't!

Seriously though, since I am going through Medic school, I now see why some states require Medic students to be an EMT for a certain amount of time, and some require an entrance exam.

Too bad more then half my class is being forced to be there

But that is another topic, for another day.

Maybe when I feel like stirring the pot again, I will bring that up

  7. What are the chances, benefits, disadvantages of working as an EMT in college?

After college...what happens? Get married and work as an EMT?

Yeoo boy. This ought to get interesting.

    Well, here goes.

Anatomy and Phiso. If you can take it, do it. It helps. Alot.

Best way to become a Medic? Become an EMT, work somewhere busy, and don't be a slug.

What are you going to college for? Do you plan on working while in college?

Your questions are rather openended, leaving much follow up to be done.

Work I just don't feel like doing for you.

Someone older, wiser, and much better at it is liable to rip a new arse hole for ya.

  8. On to you OC,

MICU will pay you more than NWFD. And probably ACFD, to start. But I know the medics work OCFD full time and only PT at ARMC because they get paid better at OCFD. Your friend that got hired, where were they from? I didn't recognize the initials.

I figured that MICU would pay better then a probies salary, but it would be hard to beat it after the 2nd of 3rd year. lol

    Mutual Aid Emergency Services.

She got the Part Time job I was offered, but the Chief called the day I hit the road to come back to Fla.  Talk about bad timing.

The Medics at OCFD, do they get paid for for their Medic? Or do they get paid the same as the FF/EMTs?

  9. OCFD and ACFD are probably going to be the best paid. And at least your EMT cert won't go bad if you in OCFD. They are hard to get hired onto though. ACFD is a little easier to get on to, although it's quite political. NWFD, you've got a snow balls chance in hell. They hire infrequently, and you usually have to work with them in some capacity before they'll hire you. At least, thats the way it used to be. You've got a better shot at the other two.

ACFD is on my list of "dream" depts, but is slightly less likely, due to the damn residency requirement.

Until I DO get hired on somewhere, I plan on getting a P/T spot with NWFD. My former partner at MAES got picked up, and pretty much works full time hours there.

But since the pay is better at a MICU, that will be full time, until I get picked up.

Oh well, as long as I have a place like this to bounce ideas off heads, I should be fine.

  10. That web site isn't very helpful....I was already registered apparently but I can't get my password! Bastards!

On to more pressing points.....what the hell would possess you to go back to that god forsaken land? You've got it made here. Not for the pay, but you'll never beat the retirement. And until NJ follows those recommendations and opens it up to municipalities and counties to operate ALS trucks, it will continue to suck. Yes, you can get paid double what you're making here if FLA, but unless you do a 401k you get nothing for retirement. And then you just hope the hospital doesn't pull a Kessler and file bankruptcy causing you to lose the retirement you paid for!

I am having the same issues trying to login.

I plan on not just doing EMS my whole career. OCFD, ACFD, North Wildwood FD, I just don't know which one I want to work for yet.

But a municipality Fire Dept is definately in the future.

    And why?

Its HOME. Maybe its just the Hell hole part of the state I am in, but I just don't really like it here.
