No I don't but currently working in an emergency department and it very frustrating to see the same BSers come in for colds or ingrown toe nails. Would be nice to have the regular, truly ill or injured patients come thru out doors, or thru our ambulances.

Friggin Don...every time you speak it makes me think someone should be doing CPR on you NOW!
Surely you can't consistently come up with such idiotic response while normally mentating...
Step up to the plate brother! Use your head, develop an entire thought, think it through, share it, and we'll go on from there.

no comments from me, I'm just going to grab some popcorn.

Well, it looks like I just landed a part time job with a company north of Boston while I finish up my lab thesis, I have my next big challenge. Coming from Southern California, land where the lows rarely reach past the mid 50s, I'm faced with working in a place where the daytime highs might never get past freezing. Does anyone have any tips with, from a provider's standpoint, any tips for dealing with working in cold weather.
You don't know cold. Layers and a tuque and get yourself a few pairs of those gloves with the exposed fingertips. Makes it easy to do almost everything you need to do outside and are cheap enough to replace if you soil them.

Right now I'm looking at the Newport Beach area. Nothing set in stone, just looking and yes I would commute if that meant working for a better service. Keep the info coming!

You guys are really discouraging! Here all we get is emerg calls where you are the one and only especially if you work rural EMS. When you work in the city you take the calls with a paramedic standing in the background for those calls where ALS care is required but the calls are calls.
From what I'm reading its sounding less and less like the system we have here. Appreciate the honesty but not what I was hoping to hear.

You could move to Texas. Much better pay, low cost of living, better protocols. Now have no clue how hard it would be for an uneducated canadian to get certified though  . If you decide schools are the way you could probably get away with one of the accelerated programs we all gripe about since you already are educated and experienced.
It would be tempting but unfortunately you folks don't have the happiest place on earth in your neighborhood
I appreciate all the great replies, defenitely taking notes and respecting all the info posted. Flying down there mid december to take a look at houses, will know more what's going on once its done and over with. Will keep you posted, I might request some personal assistance with the local area *cough* so get your phones ready.
Thanks again everyone

With my frame I'm not sure that the FD would be a wise choice. It's ridiculous to hear the jump in wage. It doesn't make sense.

A big jump from the 29/hour I make here to the 8.00/hour down there. What do Paramedics make down there? Afraid to find out knowing it's 8/hr to start.

Yes unfortunately I am aware. The cost of living is also a lot different than what we have here. One reason I'm not letting anything go and taking my time. It's about doing the research.
I'm an EMT in Alberta.
Thanks for the help

Hey folks,
Looking at relocating to CA, Newport Beach area. I've already called the state to see if someone can give me a shout back and let me know what my options are. Tho I am more trained than what EMT-Is can do down there, I still think it would be in my best interest to simply go back and redo everything in order to be on the same page as everyone there.
If any of you have information on good schools that offer the training, have any advice to give me I would really appreciate the help.
It's going to be a temporary move. I am going to keep my Canadian licence and continue to travel back and forth in order to keep my Canadian citizenship/healthcare and my work VISA comes in place.
All advice and links welcome. Thanks everyone.

Ok, life comes at ya fast, I can attest. I am unloading here.
I am taking a near total break from all internet activities for the foreseable future. I have been having a terrible stretch of luck and it's taking it's toll.
I am stopping all chatting, posting, lurking, gaming and everything except my current employer requirements.
I may or may not be back here but who knows but as of this posting, it is my last for who knows how long.
I feel a tremendous weight on my shoulders and I'm not sure where to turn to get it off. At times I feel I just want to get in my car and take a road trip but my financial difficulties right now preclude it.
So I don't know where to go. I'm not getting alot out of my church right now either.
I'm looking at losing my job of 2 years which paid >90K per year and taking a paramedic job making 60K or so less. My son see's my moods and he doesn't knwo what to do. My wife says how can she help but I just don't want to unload it on her. (I know, she's my wife but I'm not good at unloading) unless it's a anonymous forum here.
I'll quit here because I'm only feeling worse.
Arreviderchie(ha spelling aint good)

Are you moving in legally? if so, welcome to the country. :pottytrain2:

We were at 7 digits but have ran out of numbers so instead of putting in more digits, we have to put in the area code which now gives us 10 digits.
-
GOT TO LOVE IT. Had the same issue with my phone actually. Had to re-enter all my contacts with the area code. Fun to do when you have hundreds of them.
-
Hey probably but I still like to know I don't pay a dime to go see my GP, hospital or surgeries
-
haha there you go. I love our system
-
That's really interesting. Here interfacility transfers cost nothing to the patient and are covered by our healthcare system.
-
Do you folks charge for inter-facility transport?

Same training for everyone. One national exam, one standardized scope. The obvious, better pay and benefits.
