  1. It is important to note the full title, "Police: Paramedic Sexually Assaulted Patient." This is no different that any other time that any news outlet speaks of someone as if they are guilty but adds "accused" or "alleged" in many times. The police arrest people who they say committed a crime, after that it can be worked out in court. Does it look good for the profession? No. But is it someone targeting EMS to make us look bad? Probably not.

That is a trick the media plays, when I studied Journalism (it was my minor) we called it Yellow Journalism. A news agency using spectacular headlines to grab ones attention. William Randolph Hearst was notorious for this kind of trick. Many historians feel that Hearst was responsible for the Spanish American War due to his massive power in the newspaper industry and his brand of yellow journalism.

The police did not say he is guilty and he committed the crime, they can't. It is up to the District Attorney to file charges, the Grand Jury reviews the case, the suspect is arraigned, and the suspect has a trial. Only then can guilt be set by a jury of the suspects peers. In this case the news station is using the Police: blah, blah blah trick. I believe it is because it is a TV station and an online story they can get away with it. If the print media posted a headline like this there would be hell to pay in the editorial office.

P.S. William Randolph Hearst was the chief influence for the character Charles Foster Kane according to Orson Welles. He hated Hearst and his politics. It is rumored but has never been proven that Rosebud was Hearst's nickname for Marion Davies (his mistress) private parts.

  2. I disagree. (though perhaps this is a different question)

How long are you willing to withhold patient care to figure out that this is a psych patient?

Get him in the truck, treat appropriately, notify the authorities there was a threat and move on.

I have a hard time believing any of us is going to allow an obvious threat to go unreported based on fear of a HIPAA violation. I think the real question is this: Do we allow EMS to become a target on MANY calls, so that we can have the miniscule chance that one of you will recognize the one in 10 million (Ok, so I pulled that number out of my butt) people that might be a terrorist?

And how many innocent people are going to be reported in the meanwhile? It would be nice to think that we could say, "You know, these folks gave me the heeby jeebies" and someone would simply take a look at them. But as evidenced by Scars removal of a medics age and name in another thread, throwing out this information ruins people's lives!

Let EMS stick to what it does best. Make people, on a terrible day of their lives, feel a little better.

Report what makes you go "Oh shit!" And leave the rest to the cops.

    Dwayne

That quote of mine was in relation if he actually told you where the bomb was and it was real. Would you be willing to risk your life to move it.

Sorry I didn't want to push the opinions one way or another on this. I am just curious what everyones opinion is. So far two against. Anyone else?

  3. [align=center:e13ac52230]Police: Paramedic Sexually Assaulted Patient

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Portland police arrested a paramedic on charges he sexually assaulted a woman while she was being taken to a hospital.

Police began their investigation when they were called to Emanuel Hospital on Saturday.

The victim told officers she had been sexually assaulted by ??-year-old ??, who had responded to assist her with a medical problem.

After detectives investigated, they arrested ?? on two counts of sexual assault in the first degree.

Detectives are still investigating the incident.

They're seeking information from other women who may have received emergency medical care from ?? while he was working as an AMR paramedic.[/align:e13ac52230]

You know what I love about shit like this? The headline is "Paramedic Sexually Assaulted Patient" and in the body of the article is this "Detectives are still investigating the incident." Guilty until proven innocent. That's all I'll say on this one.

Also I won't post the Medics name on a national/international forum. If you must know who it is, Google it.

So when are we going to get smart and put cameras in the back to protect everyone? The patient, the Medic and the company/city/department. That's my opinion.

    So what's your opinion?

  4. Let's change the situation a bit, to the ole ticking bomb scenario.

You have Timothy McVeigh with respiratory distress. He states that when he set off a ten minute fuse for truck bomb the smoke irritated his asthma. He is in severe distress, he had to tell you that in one word sentences. He won't tell you anymore. It's been about seven minutes since he lit the fuse. There is no time for PD to get there and question him.

Do you withhold treatment until he tells where the bomb is?

Would you do "other" things to extract the information?

    Image1-22.gif

    Tick

    Tick

    Tick...

If this sounds like a dumb scenario, McVeigh really did set off a ten minute fuse and walked away from the truck. He made it several blocks to his car before the bomb went off.

RIP those lost in the Murrah Building Bombing, no disrespect intended.

  5. Dwayne, no one says you have to reign yourself in at all. Hell, I don't. Just pick your fights where there is a reason for a fight. Trust me Spenac will give you a good reason to jump his ass, just wait until it then.

  6. Well, I have to admit, I expected to see a lot of flaming in the replies for this post. Now, me, personally, working in a multicultural area, I find the joke pretty funny....

but after reading some of the other replies.... I am almost shocked not to see one particular anti-bigot spout flames over this one :!: :!:

They're all over on this thread.

  7. Might try google or ebay. Don't have any whacker tees myself, so don't know where to get them.

    Hypersensitive

    hy·per·sen·si·tive

    Pronunciation:

    ˌhī-pər-ˈsen(t)-s(ə-)tiv

    Function:

    adjective

    Date:

    1871

1 : excessively or abnormally sensitive

Someone needs to take a Valium, saying "I don't have any whacker tees myself" is not equivalent to saying your a whacker.

If I said I don't have herpes, I am not saying you do or your a herpes lesion. In case you haven't noticed we use the term whacker tees all the time when talking about EMS themed t-shirts. There is absolutely no reason to pick a fight here and get insulting. I Hate to tell you Dwayne but your coming off like a real ass here.

  8. Nice to pop in and condemn a member for a lame post Asy, I love your defending of "Non Americans" and women. Just out of curiosity where were your comments when I posted about a Muslim Saudi women being lashed 200 times for reporting a rape? Where was the outrage for women then?

NREMT-B, countless?? Three is countless to you? What is 4? Beyond reckoning?

appeal to Admin to remove the post, lock the thread and suspend the authors posting ability for a at least a month if not banning the poster altogether.

You know if one was to look at who has stirred up more shit in threads you vs PCB, guess what you win hands down. So I would be careful about chucking rocks through windows laddie.

As someone who is truly an equal opportunity offender I am consistently amazed at what can tork some people off. You find this joke offensive but you let this one slide, and this one, and finally this one.

I honestly believe some of the weakest words a human can utter are "that offends me" when speaking of anything short of violence and war. What you are really saying is my fragile ego cannot handle anything outside of my norm.

For God sakes grow a pair or get the wad out of your panties it was just a joke. Not even that funny of a joke and old as hell.

  9. The best part about THIS is the comments from readers.

Now off to train my wombat army.

    'zilla

Those comments are awesome, I especially like this one...

"I bought a can of this about 4.5 billion years ago, give or take a few million years, but when I went to use it today I noticed only half of it was still in the can. I swear I put the lid on tight. I'd give it more stars if it came in a better package."

    You gotta love half-life jokes.

  10. SAM makes a pelvis splint? Neato frito Bandito. Don't let the brightly colored splinty things fool you. Anyone with a pelvis fracture needs to be at the hospital, like, yesterday, as DocZilla pointed out. I have heard good things about wrapping an unstable pelvis in a sheet, but pick 'em, pack 'em, and fire it up.

Your pelvis can hold a lot of blood and the femoral arteries, not to mention the aorta, transverse the area. Apologize to the patient. Tell them this is going to hurt a lot but they need to be at the hospital or they're going to die. Then roll them, secure them, and drive errr... um.... safely and prudently to the hospital with due regard for traffic safety.

If you have a pelvic sling or TPOD or something, apply that at the same time as backboarding.

No, simply because rolling someone is necessary in the provision of care. The back must be assessed, the patient must be backboarded, and the pelvis should be wrapped in some sort of sling or pelvic immobilization device. None of these can be accomplished without rolling the patient. It's highly unlikely that rolling them would cause any harm other than the pain of doing it.

    'zilla

Give it a chance, it works. Now I might be biased because I worked for the hospital that invented it. They put a lot of study into this and it does work. Unlike sheets you can place this on the board, roll the patient, assess, roll them onto the board and cinch it up. It is made to stop at a certain pressure so it will not over tighten. The placement can be done in twenty-thirty seconds. It's basic, if you break your pelvis you encountered enough force to injure your spine. So the patient is going to get boarded. So why not add one quick step to stabilize the pelvis?

T-POD is kind of cool too. I do not know a whole lot about it though.

Oh and just for the record I do not work at that hospital anymore nor am I in any way getting paid or connected to the SAM Sling. I just think it's a good product.
