Actually I was listening this morning as the FD responded to a car wreck. Later today I heard the news that two people had been killed, and the media gave a time pretty close to when I was listening, so it seems legit. They are legit but there is a small delay of approx 5-20 seconds.

The easier way to get around this is to get your ham radio operators license. allowing you to operate a scanner in your personal vehicle.

@Arctickat Also already said but if your dispatch is sending you to an unsecured shooting scene you should really have a talk with them regarding your own safety.

hmm...this question has the look of a multiple guess question from an exam...so let's take a look from that angle. These are your only four choices and you have to choose one....which would it be? My answer would be "D", Two fingers on the trigger guard. "A" and "B" may ruin fingerprints, and "C" is just plain stupid. My answer would have to be E none of the above. As said before, the police are there for a reason and it's their job to control and secure crime scenes.
