  1. Know your signs and symptoms backwards and forwards especially with OB/GYN mine was heavy on that....Study alot, and the night before, get a good nights rest and do not cram! Read your check off sheets, be prepared to answer why you are doing what you are doing on your practical part, verbalizes everything, you cannot speak to much! Take a deep breath before you start and once you see the 1st question you will relax a little, I know I did. Remember if one of the answers is scene safety then it is a;ways right, then high flow 02 and rapid transport as well. Good luck and let us know how you do, I am sure you will do great! Jenn
  2. Hello and welcome to the forum! I am a recently licensed EMT-I and I remember all to well the nervousness of going on my clinical ride alongs. I was nervous that I might get sick if something looked really bad, etc...Even though it usually didn't bother me (blood) but I like you had never seen anything really "graphic" but I got a GSW to the head and chest my 1st intermediate ride and you know what? Your adrenelin level is running SO high, you do everything you need to be doing and then whe you ardone with call look back and say "Holy Sh*t" I cannot believe I just did that!!! You will do fine, come back and tell us about your best call!! Jenn
  3. We got our mask from the college bookstore, you can find a bunch of stuff at www.galls.com Welcome to the neighborhood! Jenn
  4. I agree with the A&P books, read and read and read some more. I just passed NR for my EMT-I and that is what I got as well. This might sound dumb to you but the anatomy coloring books helped me. I am a visual learner and you can find those cheap. My hubby got me a great basic cardiology book, the heart you need to know inside and out literally. One thing that I did that I had a pretty smart person tell me NOT to do is highlight the entire book, I did that and she asked me how was I supposed to pick out my key points from the chapter. good luck, it sounds like you are ready to go, jump in there and learn and we will be here along the way to try and help you out when you need it. Jenn
  5. I honestly asked the question because when I was told that I was seriously shocked. I saw how close people were but I agree that you have to want that to happen for it to happen. I guess I am trying to figure out why one group of people would be compelled to be more "loose" with their morals. Thanks for the honest answers... Jenn
  6. Yes I am sorry for not being clear, I meant cheating on partners, spouse, etc.... Thanks Jenn
  7. When I was doing my ride alongs I was told by one of the medics that there is a HIGH rate of people who cheat in EMS........I was told 95%. I was wondering if you all agreed with that, disagree and if so why do you think that is? Just seems like a really high rate to me Jenn
  8. I just took the I/85 on the 15th and it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. I think our teachers prepared us very well and the test I got in school seemed harder than the one at NR. All I can add is just remember basic simple things, there might be 3 answers that seem to be right, you choose the most right, also remember ABC's! If any question has scene safety that will be the right one, same with 02 or rapid transport. Study Study and Study some more, but when you go to take your test. get the night before a good nights rest, don't cram. If you do not know it then you are not going to learn it staying up all night Good lucj I am sure you will do just fine! Jenn
  9. No testing or anything for state license, you just have to get your state license numbers. From what I understand it is just taking your cert card and 2 forms of ID to the state office and they issue you your state certs. Doesn't everyone have to do this? It said when I passed NR it says that I cannot practice medicine until I am state certified. Thanks for all the well wishes I appreciate it! Jenn
  10. [/font:d108fe229e] Hey you guys! Wanted to tell you all that I passed National Registry, I took it on the 15th of Dec and got the results on 1/2. I thought they were pretty fast, on to get my state numbers then I will be ready to rock and roll. I wanted to thank you all for the endless support and information that you have given to me, you all are a wealth of knowledge! Take Care, Jenn
  11. Yeah I could see how that would make you think the call is going nowhere but down from here! Jenn
  12. Ok I hope this turns out to be a funny thread.......Doesn't have to be a bad call b/c someone hurt or died, just like you know in your head that the dispatcher gave you this one because you pissed her off somehow, someway..... You know the call is going to go downhill quickly after you hear/see your patient say/do this.......... OK carry on, this should be interesting, I loved when I did my ride alongs when I was in school to see om the people that got on the ambulance and start off with some stupid crap to get drugs, etc....They take one look at each other and know this call is going to be BS! Jenn
  13. Hey you guys, thank you so much for the advice. I guess the term "beating the crap outta someone" was not the correct term to be iused here, I was asking what options do I have to get someone off you that is hurting you if there is no PD around and you have to handle it with yourself and your partner. You guys gave me alot of good ideas as usual and I will check out those links. This is really the only thing I am worried about happening to me at this point, I do not know the other issues until I get out there with some experience, you guys are great! Thanks you! Jenn
  14. Should also add that I meant on my 1st post do I have the right to beat the crap outta the person to defend myself, not do I have to, sorry wrong wording. JENN
  15. Yes that....The LEGAL way and the STREET way, is there a difference? Thanks for your input on this matter. Jenn
  16. Wanted to ask a question about how it goes in the real world with these 2 issues. If a patient does something to hurt you or your partner, what happens then, do you have the right to defend yourself, If I as a woman had someone overpower me in the back of the rig do I have to beat the crap outta him. If a bystander hurt me or my partner then what. I know about scene safety. I am talking IF this happened, what are the options and what have you done in the past. Also does anyone care to share past experiences. This is one thing I have been worried about. Thanks for the advice up front and I appreciate all the insight you guys give, you have all been invaluable during my training process. I am waiting on my NREMT results for EMT-I right now so I have time to be back on here with you guys! Jenn
  17. We have FASFA I think it is called here, that they offer to help. I do not know though if that is just GA or everywhere, wprth looking into though. Good luck, Jenn
  18. Good luck to ya, I just took the NR for EMT-I, awaiting my results. Let us know how you did! Jenn
  19. Well of course that goes WITHOUT saying with you, Dust and Rid.......No need to even touch on that
  20. This thread has gotten crazy even trying to keep up with, OK the horse is dead, call in the Basics and the students to move it out of the road so we can continue on to something else please. Joke people be willing to laugh Laugh guys, I am 2 days away from registry and and I have no idea what it will be like in the "real EMS world" but I do know this, you will have the occasional people that think you will never be as smart, good looking, charming, educated as they are, so what who cares, what matters is that you display your abilitys in a manner that is confident and not cocky, that you listen to what your paramedic would like, as it IS their ass on the line, and have a personality that someone can live with for 24 hours straight. I am again a intermediate student getting ready to take my exam on Friday so what do I know, only that respect is earned not given out freely by the person in charge of you, especially since we are in the business of letting people live another day, that is a HUGE HUGE responsibility, so if the medic I will be partnered up with wants to know what med I am giving a patient, they have every right to ask, and I have no excuse for not asking before I do it until we have trust established between us. I guess I do not see the reason for you going on and on and on through posts and PM's to prove this point, EMS reality in most things are the same as life reality. Do the best job you can, learn from your more experienced partner (most times) and develop trust, don't demand it from the get go.
  21. I have been there and understand how you feel. My mother committed suicide on 11/12/03, she had progressive MS and Colon CA, she was bad off and thought she was a burden, of course she wasn't. I was angry for a LONG time, how could she leave me, how could she do this to my dad, my daughter, my sister, etc....BUT this is a phase of death acceptance and it will get better I promise, a part of you will always be a little mad I think but the sheer anger fades as you realize things must have been so bad, things we probably will never know about, I am so sorry you are going through this! Jenn
  22. You never go wrong with getting an anatomy book and start learning that stuff backwards and forwards, that will help you out ALOT! Good luck on starting school, you will love it! Jenn
  23. Hey- Just got done with all my clinical rides last week and there is a couple things I can add if you are interested. Tell the preceptor what level of training you are at and be comfortable to say that you would like to try all the things in your scope that the preceptor is willing to let you. Bring money and DO NOT ask to borrow any! We had a girl in a class do this and it was over for her, that was not the only thing she did and on that note do not "borrow" a jacket from the EMS system, and not return it, then go around saying you work there  Have your tools that you will need, your pocket mask, shears, steth, black penS, penlight, namebadge, and WATCH! Look professional and take pride in your appearance Stay off the phone! Don't just stand there during a call, there is always something you can be doing, if you don't know what to do ask. Let your preceptor know where you are going, if you have to go to the bathroom, they do not need to know the details, just out of courtesy let them know and come right back. Do not make up vital signs, if you can't hear it, you can't hear it, let them know. You will make mistakes, you won't get every IV, and you may say something stupid, but most preceptors I have had know what it is like to be a student and do not hold the "greeness" against you. Have fun and remember to breath! Oh, yeah 2 more things that I was told the minute I got in the truck WHAT GOES ON IN THE TRUCK STAYS IN THE TRUCK! IF YOU SEE YOUR PRECEPTOR AND/OR HIS PARTNER RUNNING YOU BETTER BE RIGHT BESIDE THEM OR AHEAD OF THEM! Now with that , go have fun, you will do just fine! Jenn
  24. Mine was: Closer:by Nine Inch Nails "You let me violate you, you let me desecrate you You let me penetrate you, you let me complicate you Help me I broke apart my insides, help me I’ve got no Soul to tell" When you dance, it's a little scary - and a lot sexy. LOL Jenn
  25. I am in as well, this is a utter shame! That poor boy! Jenn
