  1. In Michigan, if you kill a police K-9, you will be charged with, and tried for killing a police officer
  2. Wasn't LA County where the Paramedic program first began?
  3. I know that there have been a few mentions in the news about it here in MI
  4. It's also a well known fact that if you shoot/kill a police K-9, it's the same as shooting/killing a human police officer.
  5. You mean they wouldnt be called 'Animal Ambulance Drivers'? :-k :dontknow: :sign5: :pottytrain2: :occasion5:
  6. The picture and caption sound like 'business as usual' for the DMC (Detroit Medical Center....especially Detroit Recieving!
  7. This says it all: http://s56.photobucket.com/albums/g185/LON...ithejection.flv (you may have to copy and paste the link)
  8. If that were me as the pt, I would simply own a doctor! Correct me if Im wrong here (and Im sure someone will!) ... but amonia inhalation is a BAD thing. Even on a bottle of amonia, or cleaners that have amonia in them (like Windex) CLEARLY states to use in a 'well ventillated place'...could that be that concentrated amonia vapors aren't good for you? Amonia is even listed in the yellow Hazmat books and shows a MINIMUM of a mile evactuation downwind.
  9. If faced with making the choice of life or limb, (and all other methods of controlling the bleeding have failed), then I would not hesitate to use a tourniquet. Under the guidelines I was tought about tourniquets, wider is better. I would have no qualms about using a B/P cuff as a tourniquet. Im not sure of other states protocols, but in the event you DO get called in front of he local medical control board, you need to satisfy just one question: would someone of 'reasonable intelligence' and equal training have responded with the same treatments (obvously without volating the restrictions of your licensure level)?
  10. As cold as it may sound, I studied HUMAN A&P, trained in Basic Life Support for humans, not for fluffy the cat, or rex, the neighborhood cocker spaniel. If the pets need medical attention....take them to the VETERNARIAN. I'll be willing to bet a dollar against a dozen donuts that these people wouldn't try to take the family pet to some MD's office and expect treatment. Why then, should EMS be cross trained in veteranarian medicine as well?
  11. Dust, its a rare creature in EMS, ... kind of like 'hot meals' and SLEEP!
  12. Under Michigan protocols, the only way a pt can be 'handed off' or pt care transferred, is to someone of equal or higher licensure. Since a medic made first pt contatct, they cannot legally transfer the care of a pt they deem as a BLS pt to an EMT-I or EMT-B. They will have to transport the pt themselves, and notify dispatch that they are transporting BLS. RUQ pain, fetal postioning ... lack of masses does sound like Cholecystitis. Granted the call MAY be a BLS call, but the medics in this case would be considered negligent under Michigan protocols, and could in fact be facing abandonment charges because they did not follow protocols in the proper transferrence of pt care.
  13. Toned to the residence of an 80-ish year old couple for ' a bee in the ear' of the husband. Time: 0530. Wife states 'it must be one of them big suckers, cause I can hear it too'. After visually checking the ear canal with a flashlight, nothing found. Pt stated that the bedroom must be where it gets 'aggrivated' because thats where it starts buzzing. The buzzing stops when I leave the room. Checked the bed room, and found the alarm clock set for 0530, and set to a low volume. Amazingly, the 'buzzing' stopped when the alarm was turned off! Oh yeah....almost forgot, we were dispatched code 3, because the husband is allergic to bee stings...... What a great way to start a day!
