  1. ff ? dont get it ! Oh, "F Off", hope you dont kiss your kids with that mouth. I hate to see anyone die, but we all have to do it, all I am saying is that accidents happen, and we should not overreact everytime some dies from a freak occurrence. If you felt compelled to send money, light a candle, say a prayer, or write a song, there is nothing wrong with that.

But when the same "freak occurrence" happens 3-4 times per year, I think we can stop calling them freak occurrences and start addressing real risks in live outdoor entertainment and how to mitigate further loss of life.

  2. As someone who also works in the live entertainment industry and have friends on the summer festival circuit, I would suggest that the culprit in these cases is less likely to be the actual engineering of the portable stages, but corners cut in the on site installation. I personally know a professional rigging company who's work I would never stand underneath, and yet, they keep getting hired for gigs ...

  3. I think this is something the union could/should be looking into. In the Vancouver Police, certified field trainers get paid an extra 10% while they are coaching new recruits. New recruits can only ride with a certified field trainer until they become certified municipal constables.

  4. I've seen that happen several times. One or two jerks will screw up a good thing for all of us. You don't want that reputation.

    Just a heads up. î…

    Yup!

At one point in time, members of the Vancouver (Canada) Police Department received 50% off at KFC. One day, a member calls in an order for his daughter's birthday party, orders 3 or 4 buckets of chicken, bunch of coleslaw, etc etc etc. The guy shows up in a Hawaiian shirt and shorts, flashes his badge and asks for his discount. The girl explains that the discount is for people on-duty only so the member said something to the effect of, "well you take your chicken and shove it up you hoho." The next morning, an email went out from the regional manager of KFC stating the 50% off deal was no longer available to VPD members.

  5. While I have benefited from a discounted meal once in a while, I've never asked for a discount, even if I knew it was a policy to give us a break. In fact one time, a couple of us were eating at Boston Pizza (big chain up here) and the bills came without the customary 10% discount. I didn't care, but one of my co-workers was really sharky with the waitress about it. I have never been more embarrassed in a restaurant before in my life. Needless to say I apologised to the waitress and left a very healthy tip. Also needless to say I've never eaten out with that particular person since.

SD, bad form asking for the discount. If you abuse these sorts of gifts, they tend to go away.

  6. I'm near NYC, but I don't live in NYC. I don't want to give my exact location/department, as I don't want my employer to easily identify my postings. All too often nowadays background checks involve internet checks. I like to keep myself anonymous.

So what you're saying is the material you're posting to this board is something that you would never say in public as it would reflect poorly on you ... interesting.

  7. If anyone is interested ...

  8. No disrespect to you guys, but I couldn't give a rat's ass about post count. If a EMT-B has a thousand posts, I respect the EMT-P with a dozen posts as the guy having more training. For the exception of the ER Doctor, I am just as high, if not higher, than most of you on the respect scale. So to you, respect or disgrace.

Sorry, SD. Respect doesn't come from a certification or a class of license, it has to be earned by being a constructive member of the community.

  9. We're allowed to carry OC, provided it's under 5% in concentration of active ingredients. The higher the concentration, the longer the effects last (and that obviously provides problems in a care situation). For example, my 17% Streetwise burns for about 45 minutes (I've tested it on myself) and it's side affects last for hours, whereas my Fox Labs burns for about ten minutes (also tested it on myself) and within an hour it's like you've never been sprayed. In a professional situation, you don't want somebody screaming for 45 minutes (that's just overkill); you just want to stun them, secure them, and move on.

Then we'd have two, possibly three patients, wouldn't we?  Plus, I'm not one to cower.  I would have a hard time sleeping if I would have done that.
Or you and your partner may have gotten the crap kicked out of you and then there would have been five patients and no EMTs versus three patients and two EMTs.
  10. Actually, you don't want tase somebody after you've doused them with OC. Many makers of OC use flammable propellants, so if a shock is delivered in a place that is drenched with OC, you may light the patient on fire. Learned this in my TASER certification class.

I obviously mistyped. The majority of scenes don't turn out deadly, just the majority of deadly scenes appeared safe at one point. Your story did give me a good laugh, though.

Here's a real story, where I was glad that I took the precautions that I did:

My partner and I were dispatched to a dog bite call. The patient was a 17 year old girl who was walking with her mom near her home. Apparently a neighbor's dog (a Dalmatian of all dogs) became aggressive and attacked her, biting through clothing and clawing her body. She was able to get away from the dog, but she suffered some pretty good clawing and bites so her mother called 911.

Low and behold! My partner and I were dispatched before the police or animal control. Wonderful system...

We arrive and scene and make contact with the patient. She informs us of what happened (we figured the dog had been secured, the scene looked safe). As I was cutting through some clothing to examine her wounds (her clothes were already tattered), her mother began to scream, "THERE HE IS! THERE HE IS!"

I quickly turned around expecting to see a dog, but instead caught site of the biggest douchiest/white trash looking people I've ever scene WITH a Dalmatian by his side. The mother began screaming, "FUCK YOU. I hope the kill that fucking thing you..." then the man started screaming at the woman (apparently there was an existing rivalry between them).

I jumped in and tried to calm the mother telling her to step out of it, my partner did the same to the man. Out of the corner of my eye I saw my partner go flying back, and it appeared as if the man had pushed him. OC time came as I sprayed both him and his dog (I later found out that the type of OC I was carrying wasn't dog friendly, and caused the dog to tear itself nearly to death. Meh, I'm a people EMT not a dog EMT, I don't know these things). The man came running at me, I dodged him and we all stayed clear. He was holding his eyes in pain and still cussing us out. Animal control soon arrived and yelled at me for spraying the dog (then they detained the man). The Sheriff soon followed, though my partner didn't want to press any charges.

Had I not had my OC, that could have ended very differently.

Couldn't you have just taken the patient into the ambulance, locked the doors and updated police as to the fight in progress?

  11. I believe your deluded .. Canada is NOT a 2 party system and never will be, that's an american gig ..

between a black rock and a swear spot ... te he.

When the government holds 167 seats, the opposition 102 and the next party 34 and then 4 and 1 respectively after that, we effectively have a two party parliament. What remains to be seen is whether this becomes the new status quo or whether we return to a situation where the Liberals and or the Bloc are able to have strong electoral showings. We will see in 4-5 years.

Personally, I am glad that the Bloc is down to 4 seats. I feel that they should have never been allowed to have a federal party, as the entire basis of their party is treasonous. Their entire goal is separation from Canada, but with an attempt to retain Canadian infrastructure - a parasitic approach. We have coddled the "Quebec Nation" far too long.

I actually think that it is wonderfully Canadian that the Bloc is a federal party and at one point formed "Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition." In other countries, wars are fought and people die for the cause of regional separation, but in Canada, we voted about it.
  12. The agreement on Internal Trade and Mobility of Labour (signed by all the provinces) would disagree with that statement, union membership is NOT legally a requirement to work in BC in any area of government, in fact one could argue in court (and win) that hiring based on union membership is discriminatory.

Education, Experience, Merit with Seniority being the last of "conditions" in any Hiring process.

Unfortunately at the end of the day if BCAS, Justice Institute and CUPE honestly wish to improve services, logically one would want only the best and most qualified of candidates, agreed is it the way of the world that to have protection (official or not) in place. I don't disagree that this occurs but its not best for ANY system. God knows CUPE and BCAS have had some Epic Fails as of late.

The labour mobility agreements are to do with licensing, not employment. The mobility agreements do not change any employment policy of a service or the collective agreements with the union(s). While union membership is not a legal requirement for employment in BCAS, it is mandatory as per the collective agreement. Just like the collective agreement sets out that vanacnies are to be filled from within the ranks before an external candidate (no matter how qualified) is considered.

I am very new to this career and I don't doubt for a second that you could run circles around me with your hands tied behind your back when it comes to knowledge and skills in the back of the car. However, the law the legal system is something I have some real life experience with.

  13. I have yet to be considered to be interviewed for the 3 positions I have applied for, and they are not the most bid areas btw, apparently "applicants from IN House have priority" well, so I am told from the horses mouth, no matter experience or what or what credentials one may have.

It is pretty normal in every union environment that I have ever worked in that internal candidates are considered first for any position. Failing to find a qualified internal candidate, positions are posted externally. Just the game we all have to play.
