  1. What seems to for me is to look at it differently. Instead of looking at it as a graded test for class, I look at it as a way for me to gauge my own knowledge and zero in on what I need to work on. Of course, this might be easier for me because I started it in high school, but I think it would be worth a shot.

  2. I will keep him in my thoughts and prayers. Let us know how he does. The best thing to do for him right now is to help him keep a positive outlook. Remember, attitude can make all the difference in recovery.

  3. I wasn't defending the guy. I feel he should be off the streets. Period. Regardless of his reasons. He's proven himself to be a danger to his patients, and probably the public if he can't even restrain himself on duty. I was simply curious because the article stated they didn't know why he did it. You don't just start punching a restrained patient(or anyone, for that matter) without a reason. Unless you're totally nuts, in which case I'm sure they can find a nice bed in psych for him.

  4. Heehee. Good one, Micheal! I'm curious as to what prompted him to hit the guy in the face. Just sounds very odd. You would think someone else on scene would know something. Maybe the guy slept with the EMT's wife or something.

  5. 1993 Jeep Cherokee Country 4.0! Inline 6, 4x4, power windows and locks, cd player. 189K miles and still runs like a champ. Most of the suspension is new though, it rains in the roof somewhere and shorted out my alarm led sensor a few weeks back(nothing like the smell of an electrical fire early in the morning), my front seats are taped in place because the springs that hold the handles to move them broke, front end looks like chit after hitting a 150 pound deer two years back. Oh, and the park/neutral safety switch is going out so, even though it's an automatic, I sometimes have to put it in neutral to start it. But she's my tank and I love her! Getting ready to start rebuilding her soon!

  6. I think the mayor looked like he wanted to support the officers. He just knew that if he did the media backlash would end his career, too. He looked really uncomfortable when he said anything negative about them(and you could tell it was pre-written by a speech writer) but then the parts about how wonderful the police work was from him ad-lib. He also tried his hardest to turn it back on the perp/victim when he said if he had to suffer through watching the whole thing everyone else does too. While it was definately a chase, I didn't really see anything that looked terribly "high speed". Maybe it's just my interpretation of what "high speed" is? Did anyone catch what the guy was wanted for? If it was something like stealing a candy bar it was stupid to even engage in a chase in a crowded city anyway.

  7. Advertising a DUI checkpoint!? Why don't they just post a sign that says "Wait till next weekend to go out so we can twice as many on the roads"? Or "Take the road less traveled but three times as long"? That's just stupid. I've always hated the fact that entrapment is perfectly legal here(or I've seen some cops breaking the law), but now I'm really glad. Yeah, it's bs to park on a sidewalk with no lights to clock me going 5 over, but at least you'll get the drunks!

  8. So I'm not doctor, but I don't get how that could be a second degree type anything. I didn't see one single dropped beat. What i did see was p few p waves but others were indiscernable and a regular r-r with wide qrs and two conducted PAC's. It looks like a junctional rhythm to me coming from low in the junction. The p waves that are visible seem to be kind of haphazardly strewn around like the SA node is just firing whenever it feels like it. Just my interpretation, but I really don't see any 2nd degree of any sort in there.

  9. Those officers should be criminally charged as well. Yes, emotions were high. But that doesn't give them the right to do something like that. Yes, the guy might have done something heinous before the chase. Still doesn't give them the right. They are cops. Not judges, not juries, and not executioners. That could have made the difference between whether that guy survived that accident or not.

Keep in mind that at some point in our careers in EMS we may(and, depending on were you live, likely will) come across a patient that we would rather not treat. One of my instructors had to treat a father that had killed his child and then attempted to kill himself. As much as a lot of us, myself included, think that man deserved to die, he was given the same exemplary care that any other patient would get. We don't get to decide otherwise and neither do the cops.

  10. Vehicle drivers, regardless of the vehicle, all have a responsibility to themselves and others to take appropriate steps to assure their safety and the safety of others on the road. I forgot to mention on my previous post that not only should we always look over our shoulders, but also never float next to another vehicle. This should probably go double for motorcycles and very small cars like Miatas. You're just very difficult to see at that point. Adjust your speed to put a gap between you, even it means you have to slow down for a few moments.

  11. Considering she's done it at least twice(that we know of) I have to wonder if she's one of those that think it's funny to "fake out" a cyclist. I used to go to school with a girl that bragged about doing that kind of thing. It just sounds a little ironic that twice she would just so happen to change lanes at the moment a motorcycle tries to pass. Did your dad report his run in with her? If so, they will hopefully see that and realize she didn't learn anything and could probably use some jail time. This time she managed to kill someone and seriously injure another.

On a related note, I don't think the problem is just with motorcycles. I don't know how many times I've seen people just glance at their mirrors and change lanes. Even my jeep has been caught in blindspots and i've nearly been sideswiped. I think the problem is with people not taking the extra couple of seconds to look over their shoulder before changing lanes.

  12. I agree with you, docharris and fiznat, if Tristan is trying to learn 12. If you just want a basic understanding of 3 lead, get ECGs Made Easy by Barbara Aehlert. It gives you some foundation in a&p and electrophysiology, q&a and crossword puzzles reviews after each chapter, introduction to 12-lead without getting so in-depth it makes your head spin, a post-test, a cd, and a pocket guide. It helped me out alot.

  13. Yeah, I'd carry it on duty, but I'd carry a pack of dollar store pens to let others use. I'm a pen fanatic. Do you know, btw, if the nib or ink or anything can be customized? It's gotta write smooth, you know. And not bleed through, say, a pcr.

  14. I'm still learning but given what I know about seizures I'd be interested to know how long it's been since seizing stopped, how long it lasted, type, cause(epilepsy or some other?), and any treatments. We know that a prolonged seizure can cause hypoxia. We know that brain injury(the cause?)/hypoxia(the result) can cause ecg changes. We know that seizures can cause or be caused by electrolyte imbalances. I would have to wonder if some of these changes on the ecg may be temporary results of the seizure activity or indicate the cause of the seizure if this is not an epileptic patient. Can we get a SAMPLE and full set of vitals?

  15. Exactly. And what's so menacing about trying to get a reaction for a bathing suit? Have these people ever been to a beach!? The Oceanfront here is more like Sodom and Gamorrah in the summer. That's why the hotel housekeepers make an average of $15-17 and hour or $30-40 a room during the "in season". Good grief. Personally, I find him funny just for the shock value. People should just be glad he's only trying to get a reaction on his bathing suit.

  16. I fail to see what he was arrested for. Yeah, it's weird, even creepy. It makes people uncomfortable. But it said very clearly he never threatened anyone. Just showing of his suit. Which, btw, covered all of his stuff. I'm more worried about my kids seeing some woman with her nipples almost showing and her rear literally hanging out(or worse, in a thong). That makes me uncomfortable. Next time I see it, I'll be sure to have her arrested. Same with guys "sagging" their pants and newlyweds making out in public.

  17. I hadn't looked into the brother too much. Do we have an age on this guy? Is his brother a twin and if not can we get his age? Any family history of liver, gallbladder, pancreatic, etc problems? Any family history of sickle cell disease or the like? How about possible exposure to hepatitis or family history of autoimmune hepatitis? Family history of rheumatoid arthritis? I know these are long shots, but figure why not rule them out, too? B)

  18. Do the sorority sisters say anything about this "partying"? Was she drinking or using drugs? Her bp is kinda high, hr low, rr high. Since we don't appear to be getting much from "da hos" does she show any signs of trauma or chronic alcohol use? I say fudge the fluid bolus, run it kvo. The bp is already rising and too high. Also, is she still perfusing adequately? I'd get ready to pace(hr 50) and if she's not perfusing well get that started. Oh, and get her on the nrb @15. May bring that hr up a little. Maybe not, but worth a try. What's her skin turgor like, btw?

  19. An article I read on here a few minutes ago made me curious. Does the area you live in offer assistance with car safety seat installation and, if so, how? Also, when the seat is installed are there any questions asked as to where the seat came from or instructions on how to use it properly offered?

Here, every fire department offers help with assuring that safety seats are properly installed. I actually take mine to a fire station because my Jeep's seats are very "squishy" and at 100 pounds I'm no where near big enough to get it in tight enough. It actually takes 2-3 guys to do it(don't worry, I call ahead). They always ask if I myself purchased it and if it's ever been involved in an accident and if these answers are not satisfactory they tell you to buy a new one and outline why. However, not once have I ever been given tips for proper use. Most parents don't realize why it is vital to make sure that the chest buckle is between the shoulders or as close as possible. I hate seeing kids with that buckle across their abdomen. That's an ejection or severe internal injuries just waiting to happen. Please, if you do these installations make sure the parents are aware that the chest buckle should never be over a childs abdomen along with all the other safety precautions(forward vs backwards facing, shoulder straps in the right slots for childs height, etc.). If the parents don't have the manual for their seat this can usually be found on the manufacturers website.
