  1. BLS before ALS you have to be an emt for a year atleast before you can start to be a medic.good emt skills is what makes a good medic.i dont give a damn if you are ALS is you cant to the basics then you are no good to me.think about how many ALS calls really go down on any given day, where i work(in manahttan) alot of calls get upgraded by the callers because they want an ambulance to get there faster but when you get there its bullshit. yes ALS is hard,i was in medic school til i got hurt at work and had to drop out but so is emt work.medics need us and we need the medics.alot of places double as bls/als and are usually run by fire and thats the true issue imo. if you are a fire fighter then thats great but the system should be kept seperate.ems should be run by someone who has medical traning and not by a fire fighter. getting back to which is better, neither is better, its what you know and how you do it.i can start a line,do the leads and push drugs better than some of these medics out here but i have seen als do better immoblization and basic bleeding control better than some of the techs who have been on the job for 20 years. if you are an medic then you need to keep up your emt skills because all als protocols say BLS interventions first and just because we are on scene there to help you otu doesnt mean have us do all of that because you dont want to.learn the new tricks from your emts as for the techs learn the simple things from the medics like how to spike a bag or how to put the leads on the pt. ems isnt going to go anywhere if we keep bashing eachother, als saves bls but its bls skills that saves als
  2. to descrimintae against someone who has a disease AND is healthy enough to work meaning they are not calling out sick every other day or something of that nature is kinda messed up because the public is afraid of the EMS proviver who shows up giving them something...its called BSI i could care less if my co worker had aids,im not sleeping with them and if im working with them and caring for a pt im going to take neccisary bsi to keep from both being contamintated and giving the pt whatever i may have at the same time
  3. you know what, justto keep from further pissing off ONE person here(and they know who they are) im going to leave you people alone but before i go i have this to say. -BLS will always be greater than ALS because you have to learn how to crawl before you can walk -anyone who thinks that its funny to make idiotic remarks about something that i posted and didnt like, well clearly you have nothing better to do -are there good tech and medic...of course the same can be said for the bad ones, but its the ones like you people that make me want to stay and emt and just go straight to nursing school so when your dumb asses bring in a pt i can look at you and say you dont know what your doing in closing, well lets just say that your lucky there a lady present
  4. am i the only person here who has heard of notifications? i am not going to wait around for als for someone who's having chest pain if i can get them to the hospital faster.now lets not get that confused with the fact that i wont ask if they are around but if its serious enough im not going to waste time.i was taught in my system that you should not have to wait for medics if their time to you is greater than the time to the hospital. i cant count how many times i have watched a medic waste time tryinng to get a line in and couldnt,or who would ask for bls backup and not get to the scene before the emts arrive because they dont want to have to do any real work.
  5. i notice that you people bitch about little things in an attempt to justify your answers.ill bet my certification that most of you people work in small cities that wouldnt know what to do with themselves is more than 10 people were hurt all at one time.your hospitals would shit themselves.any good ems provider knows that you should not take forever to asses a pt and get off scene to the hospital like we do here but then again i guess thats why my EMS system is ranked No.1 and thats including the private hospitals and if you dont belive me then look it up in Jems.
  6. first of all isnt there something called the discrimination act,i could of swore that was a part of civil rights that is in the constitution.... and if i got aids from a person, yuea i would be fucking pissed but im not going to blame it on the system.i knew the risks when i took the job and if i didnt take the neccisary prectaions then its my fault.and in all seriousness here, when was the last time we heard about anyone in ems getting THAT sick from a pt.if you use BSI and take take your time then your chances are lessened greatly. and like i said,if your THAT scared then your in the wrong business.
  7. cabrini no longer exist and most of the hspo runs through a company called transcare so just come to fire and be done with it.were much better anyway
  8. i am truly tired of being put down because im am an emt-b.just because i am not authorized to run a line doesnt mean that i am not a good ems provider, there are more bls than als so of course they are going to send the ones they can spare the most first and then IF we need the back up then we call for it
  9. ok you know what all you people out there who think that bls cant handle a cardiac have to be from some far out state where you still use mast pants and cant get to a hospital in less than an hour because you dont know how to move an ambulance.here in the real world its bls BEFORE als. ...and where i work we are sent to help out the medis because they cant do everything themselves.now heres my thing i have worked side by side with some of the best medics in this country and it takes a medic TWICE as long to do thier assesment as it does for us to do ours and you know what it doesnt matter if you have two medics working at the same time it still takes a while.....it would take a medic the same amount of time to start an ekg,run a line and push meds then check for vitals than it wuld for me to put in a notification, get to the hospital and let somone who is better trained find out if someone is having an MI.unless someone falls under the contra indication for asprin then giving them 81mg isnt going to kill them and it may make them feel better....so all you medics get off your damn high horses and remember your bls traning and if you think you can survive a day in a REAL city you are welcome to try
  10. interesting.... its nice to know that someone has given this some serious thought and has given their own opinion on it. as ems providers we are subjected to so many diffrent hazords a day and in the city that i work in we barley get any protection from anything because we are not firefighters/ems.,thats seperate here but in my time as an emt(5 years) i have gooten so many uri's and numerous cuts and scars from the job but at the same time are we not screened before we go into the ems system where we are about to help people.and are we not required not only by our protocols but also by our general traning as a whole to question every paitent and treat every one like they may have an infectios disese on them at all times? if a person has tb are we not supposed to cover them up with a mask as well as do the same for ourselves.yes i know there are people who do not want to tell us some things about their medical history because we are not doctors but if you are really that worried about infection then do one of two things.......either work in a haz-may suit at every call until you get back to your station or quit being EMS because we knew what we were getting into and if you think about it you are more likely to get sick in the streets walking around than you are from a paitent.....especially if you live in a city where you take crowed mass transit like new york city has basicly what im trying to say if you didnt understand it was that if they can pass the medical clearance then anyone should be allowed to work EMS and dont complain about it if you get sick because thats what we deal with....sick people
