  1. So if I under sand this right your saying that it is ok that we cant intubate because if medics do it and miss it dose more harm? If this is the case are you saying you would just put in an OPA or an NPA and it will do just as good? If it is a skill issue then wouldn't more piratic help?

  2. Ok at my job people have started getting upset about this and i wanted to know what others think. In the county I work in there about to take away pediatric intubation. I think it sounds very dumb so what do you all think? and why would you think this is ok?

  3. I always wear my seat belt. The reason i wrote this was because 3 weeks ago i lost a friend in a car crash he was not wearing a seat belt. And then in high school some of my freinds were coming home from a foot ball game and all but one had a seat belt on and he was safer with out it because his side was completely demolished. But then it makes me think if your're all saying that it is rare that people are safe with out on on how rare is it?

  4. Ok i have a question? On seat belts, in any one's experince have you seen better out come of survival with a seat belt on or off? For example, in a roll over accident the pt was not wearing his seat belt and he didn't make it. But in another accident the pt was not wearing a seat belt and that saved her because in the crash she was thrown in the back seat and the dash folded down around the front seat had she been in the seat she would have been crushed from the waist down.

Your formula is basic, but it varies depending on what one is solving for. One must obviously know the volume to be infused, the time that the medication is to be deliverd over, and the drip rate factor (i.e. micro vs. macro).

Give me one of your problems and I will solve it for you step by step so you can see it all mapped out (I would try and make one up but I can't think right now, as it is 0215 and I'm beat).

I would love it if you could teach me some more of this stuff and brake it down for me.

To what end are you using drip rate calculations? Are you calculating rates for med admin or are you doing maintenance rates with NS, D5W, Ringer's ect.? If you're just doing standard solution maintenance rates there are some quick and dirty methods for on car that work well. Using a 10gtt/mL set 1gtt every 6 seconds yields 60mL/hr for example.

I belive there are no drugs involved but would that make a difference? If so then what is the difference? How do you maintenan the rates with NS,D5W,Ringer's ect?

  7. Ok sothis might be a dumb question or have has been asked befor but here gose any way. In my EMT class they taught us how to calculate drip rates but I am still kind of bad at them any one have any suggestions? And I have a question? dose drug calculations differ then drip rates? And I am trying to get into an LVN program would this be covered agin or better?

I know the drip rate formula is DxR/T (Dos times Rate divied by Time)

Thanks for any input and help on this and sorry if I am a little over my head.

  8. This was given to me from a freind just wanted to share i thought it was cool!

In Phoenix , Arizona , a 26-year-old mother stared down

at her 6 year old son, who was dying of terminal leukemia.

Although her heart was filled with sadness,

she also had a strong feeling of determination.

Like any parent, she wanted her son to grow up &

fulfill all his dreams. Now that was no longer possible..

The leukemia would see to that. But she still

wanted her son's dream to come true.

She took her son' s hand and asked,

'Billy, did you ever think about what you wanted

to be once you grew up?

Did you ever dream and wish what you would

    do with your life?'

Mommy, 'I always wanted to be a fireman

    when I grew up.'

Mom smiled back and said, 'Let's see if we can

    make your wish come true.'

Later that day she went to her local fire

department in Phoenix , Arizona , where she met

Fireman Bob, who had a heart as big as Phoenix

She explained her son's final wish and

Asked if it might be possible

to give her 6 year-old son a ride around the block on a fire engine

Fireman Bob said, 'Look, we can do

better than that. If you'll have your son ready at

seven o'clock Wednesday morning, we'll make

him an honorary Fireman for the whole day.

He can come down to the fire station, eat with us,

go out on all the fire calls, the whole nine yards!

And if you'll give us his sizes, we'll get a real fire uniform

for him, with a real fire hat - not a toy -- one-with the emblem of the Phoenix Fire Department on it, a yellow slicker like we wear and rubber boots.'

'They're all manufactured right here in Phoenix ,

so we can get them fast.'

Three days later Fireman Bob picked up Billy,

dressed him in his uniform and escorted him from his hospital bed to the waiting hook and ladder truck.

Billy got to sit on the back of the truck

and help steer it back to the fire station.

    He was in heaven.

There were three fire calls in Phoenix that day

and Billy got to go out on all three calls.

He rode in the different fire engines,

    the Paramedic's' van,

and even the fire chief's car.

He was also videotaped for the local news program.

    Having his dream come true,

with all the love and attention that was lavished upon him, so deeply touched Billy, that he lived three months longer than any doctor thought possible.

One night all of his vital signs began to

drop dramatically and the head nurse, who believed

in the hospice concept - that no one should die alone, began to call the family members to the hospital.

Then she remembered the day Billy had spent

as a Fireman, so she called the Fire Chief and

asked if it would be possible to send a fireman

in uniform to the hospital to be with Billy as he made his transition.

The chief replied, 'We can do better than that.

We'll be there in five minutes.. Will you please do me a favor?

When you hear the sirens screaming and see the

lights flashing, will you announce over the

PA system that there is not a fire?'

'It's the department coming to see one of its finest members one more time. And will you open the window to his room?'

    About five minutes later a

hook and ladder truck arrived at the hospital and extended its ladder up to Billy's third floor open window--------

16 fire-fighters climbed up the ladder into Billy's room

With his mother's permission, they hugged him and held him and told him how much they LOVED him.

    With His dying breath,

Billy looked up at the fire chief and said,

'Chief, am I really a fireman now?'

    'Billy, you are, and

The Head Chief, Jesus, is holding your hand,' the chief said

With those words, Billy smiled and said,

'I know, He's Been holding my hand all day, and

    The angels have been Singing..'

He closed his eyes one last time.

I can certainly respect those that do not wish to share. The reason I asked is that I see alot of newbies in this forum who have just begun their EMS career, and may not have experienced what the holidays bring to EMS --- my hope was to be able to give them so expectation and coping skills for the inevitable bad call that will occur in the next few weeks.

If you would rather just share your agency's or personal coping mechanisms, that will suffice.

I have a question? along with the coping sad calls. sorry if this is not approite

I am a new EMT and i haven't been in the field yet but when coming home from a trip I was on a lay over in the air port and saw a women crying so i gave her a tuise that i had and asked her if she was ok? and under her arm was a fold flag and some dog tags and we sat for a while and she told me that she spent her thanksgiving burying her son. and after she got on her flight I ematledy called my mom and told her everything and then I cryed. how do you help in things like that? how do you deal with it?

  10. ok so i read and have found allot and it leaves me with more questions?

I found out TB can be managed by a few drugs but i don't know what they do? would albuterol do any thing to help?

also TB can sometimes be outside of the lungs and effect other organs would that be worse? what would they do for that?

  11. Ok so those links answered most of my questions but if no one minds can some petter explain theses?

2.)What dose it do to the respiratory system?

4.) In the article it sad that they wanted to remove her left lung. Can you live without it? How?

I was told you can live with out a lung. But would there be any other complations because of it? Because they are missing a lung they would not have as much title volume right?

this might be over my head but it is helpful but sorry

  12. so i have questions about this topic?

    1.) What is TB exactly?

2.)What dose it do to the respiratory system?

    3.) Is the damage permanent?

4.) In the article it sad that they wanted to remove her left lung. Can you live without it? How?

sorry if these are dum or not appropraite

4cmk6: Why can't you do anything in EMS till Oct. 6th?

Because you have to work in the position you started in for 6months before you can transfer in to another deparment.I started working at the company before i finished school so I could have a foot in the door. Also I am working tords an associate degree in Science/Nursing and English.

  14. My question is this I finished EMT-B school in May and can't go in the filed in till October 6th and I find my self forgetting things what should I do? I read my book every night and been using my flash cards as well to help me rember but my problem is doing assments and vitles. What to do?

PS: My family wont let me use them any more!!! Because I used them first and now my older sister is starting nursing school and useing them as well so they said NO MORE!!!
