  1. Shoot I have to learn not to type so fast......compassion and RESPECT is what I meant...on a similar note I am currently working on a project for school on OEMS rules and regulations in the state of MA the CMR 170:940 states and I checked this twice..."Any condition or action that endangers the health or safety of the public is grounds for suspension of EMT certification" the word condition bothers me or am I reading to much into it?
  2. I think everybody is missing Dougs point...if we are going to say that an infected HCW be banned from treating pts due to their disease status than the reverse discrimination could very well be true also. I understand the concept of "do no harm" and agree completely with that train of thought ..but....don't you think that as healthcare professionals we would know and understand slightly better than the "average Joe" on the street what exactly would cause a risk to our pts, were as the infected(and i don't care what the disease is) person seeking our assistance would? If we are going to discriminate against persons with communicable diseases than it should be across the board. On a personal note I DO NOT believe in this line of thought at all. Although I don't personally know any HCW who has this issue I am more than positive there are more than capable individuals out there who are trying to live their lives with this problem and are doing the best job they can. Another note...I am Dougs partner and have been for the last 15 months or so first as a Basic and now as an Intermediate/Medic student...I have NEVER in the thousands of calls we have done together seen him treat a pt with anything less than compassion and resect even if in my mind they didn't always deserve it.
  3. Yes ask Doug I can be very long winded..lol and to answer the question all of these things are still in the works i don't believe the "stand-bys" have started yet all of this is just talk. And as far as AMR goes they did me a favor.....I worked for them for 6 yrs absolutely dedicated employee they forced me to leave and I couldn't be happier...County Ambulance is a wonderful place to work and I am very happy and lucky to be there(I think Doug agrees with me).
  4. Ok first off I live in this county(Berkshire County MA) and I also worked for AMR before they closed our division and laid all of us off and I currently work for County Ambulance both of these services are located (or were located) in Pittsfield the largest city in the county..neither of these services ever staffed the town of Lanesboro it was always under a mutual aide agreements along with several other small communities south of Pittsfield and currently County Ambulance is the only ALS service for these small towns. When AMR closed its doors on Dec31st 2007 there was only 22 employees left myself being one of them...the whole county was scrambling because no one had any idea what in the world was going to happen with the void AMR left Lanesboro at that time decided they needed to have full time day coverage it is a very small town with the mall being a huge part of it just due to lack of residents. There was offers to the ex AMR employees from all over..the paramedics were being seriously bargained with County was the only service that was able to come up with the $$$$ so in turn Lanesboro had to offer $15.00/hr just to get anybody to apply this is for basic level service..I believe they wound up with all ALS providers anyway but it is also just on a temporary basis and it isn't the primary job for anybody thats there some of them also work for County. There is a serious lack of professional EMS providers in this area and the days of the volunteer are over (unless you are dedicated like my partner who volunteers in his hometown...but i personally just don't have the time). I personally believe Lanesboro just plain jumped the gun as far as needing full time crews during the day but like i said the whole county was in a panic from AMR leaving...but the primary point that the article didn't mention was that the mall at one point in time requested/demanded that the ambulance in Lanesboro be on "stand-by" at the mall once to twice a week and for the crews to be in the mall doing B/P's etc for the shoppers...don't you think that if they want that type of dedicated truck and crews that they should be responsible for covering the cost?
  5. I'm an "I" finished it this past july had 5 weeks off and started medic school about to start pharmacology next week after break is done i personally found an advantage by being an "I" first. The first part of medic program was the "I" portion out of 23 students i am only one of 3 "I"s in the class medic school is a huge challenge and commitment everything everybody has told you is true x's a million being an "I" to start enabled me the opportunity to get into the "grove" of school without getting slammed by a bunch of stuff i had heard very little about. The jump from basic to "I" was huge and i had been a basic for 16 yrs and on a medic truck full time for 4 yrs but if you study hard and take it seriously you'll be fine either with the "I" course first or without commitment is key...good luck
  6. thats HIS decision to stay til after....not MINE......
