  1. That reminds me of an old bus safety video they had us watch in elementary school. One kid's arm was hanging out the window and he lost it. Another child bent down to pick something up that fell right next to the bus and ended up run over. There was another one or two in that movie. I remember that it scared the heck out of me and I have never forgotten it.

  2. I've been searching the forums, and finding many posts recommending people attend an accredited paramedic program, but darned if I can find any clear explanation of just why. I'm about to start an AAS degree program for Paramedic, but the program isn't accredited while the college I'll be taking it at is. The college I'll transfer the Associate's to does have an accredited Bachelor's degree in EMS.

Maybe I'm just having a really bad day today, but would someone mind cluing me in?

  3. I've considered having this done up in a tattoo on my shoulder blade (without the top half-moon thing, as this is actually a piece of jewelry), maybe with the celtic knotwork in color, but I don't know.

I'm actually the only one among my siblings (7 of us) who doesn't have any ink. I won't get one until/unless I'm sure of why I want one, that it's not to just fit in with them or something. And I wouldn't do it for a couple years yet, as I'm new to EMS.

  4. If I've already replied to this, I apologize - at my local college, for the degree it's 5 semesters beginning in the fall (I'll actually do six, since I'm taking some general classes this summer to ease the load later on), so roughly 18 months. The total cost comes to just above $5,000.00 if you qualify for in-state tuition rates.

  5. I'm not entirely a bored housewife, but in some ways I am - I've been home for the past 8 years. My youngest will be in Kindergarten this coming fall. Having the kids all in school is only a small part of me going back to school for medic.

Anyways, here I am. 32 y/o and I'll be back in college in another month. I decided to take some of the general classes this summer, get them out of the way. This fall I'll begin the AAS paramedic program.

Dagny - you mentioned having a yarn store. Do you knit then? I've recently learned to knit, and I'm enjoying it.

  6. Hmmm just what I need on the back of my purple dodge mom-mobile. "So NOT cool, mom!" according to my oldest (12) - We know you're an EMT, but why does the rest of the world need to know?

She's at that anything and everything related to my mother embarasses me stage....hey, maybe I SHOULD get one! And that neat embossed star of life denim jacket (that's EWW way too 80s Mom!) http://www.emtcatalog.com/store/catalog/pr...products_id=805

  7. Yes, I'm in NC (Jax)...hmmmm sounds like I'd best double check just where the test is going to be given at! I signed up for the first one available on the list, and it just said CFCC Wilmington. I was thinking the main campus downtown.

  8. I'll have to get back to you..I don't have my book with me, but in a nutshell - it's called EMT Complete or something like that, but we called it "Incomplete." It's got a workbook integrated into the text, which the powers that be thought they'd like rather than handing out two of their own workbooks; but it turned out to be so lacking in depth of information that they augmented often from an older text. They also taught using older PowerPoint slides because of the lack of depth of information with this book and related instructional materials.

  9. Wow. The drama from the EMTB classes I took have me wondering what more is coming through the medic courses. I don't feel right about sharing the particulars though I will say that I'd never seen a diabetic in crisis before class. Honestly though I hope the drama keeps to a minimum!

  10. I passed the EMTB class! Taking it the second time definitely helped me to be able to focus on putting all the skills together fluidly. It also helped to not be sick this time LOL! I realize though that these skills only serve to begin my education, and are not the end of it. I am taking the state exam on January 18th, then seeking employment in the next county over since they hire Basics. In February I can reapply for the EMS degree at the community college to earn my Paramedic, and I'm looking forward to starting that next August as well.

Oh...and here's something cool I found out recently...part of me wanting to be a medic is because both my dad and my former stepmom were medics. They were volunteers while on active duty in the Navy. They'd both stopped working EMS (my dad ended up with two rods in his back from a bad landing skydiving with a couple Navy buddies) at some point. I haven't talked to my former stepmom in a couple years because of family stuff, but when we got back in touch recently I found out that she is working on recertifying and becoming a medic again!

My dad has said if it weren't for his back he'd never have stopped working in EMS, and he's tickled that I'm making it a family tradition (two of my brothers have no interest - although one does work in medicine as a radiology tech; my other brother is considering EMS and my sister is joining the Navy next year and keeping that tradition).

ANYWAYS I realize I'm rambling, I apologize...I'm just happy and excited and wanted to share!

  11. Thanks, everyone! I'm looking forward to this next go around. Like has been mentioned, I can focus on the details and putting it all together rather than learning it all at once. I'll definitely be well grounded in these basics, and my patient care will be better for it!

  12. Well, test anxiety got me. Academically I did just fine, a 91.5% average. However...on one of my final trauma scenarios, I put the pt in a collar but forgot to have someone maintain cspine. DUH, Beth! Then the other one, I didn't miss anything critical, but I got to a point where my brain quit. I couldn't finish it. Both the instructor and I agreed that I need to take the class again, that I am not quite where I need to be to take the state boards and go out into the field.

SO I'm going to take EMT-Basic again in November (and be all the better for it, I'm sure!). I was disappointed in myself a little, til I remembered that this is NOT an easy course, and there's nothing wrong with needing more practice!

I did have fun though! :D
