  1. Am I the only one who thinks it's odd this person specifically sought out an EMS web board and joined it just to post that they are leaving EMS?

It is unlikely that she joined in October 06, just to post this in February 07. I would assume she chose to join EMT City, because she is an EMT. [sigh] Perhaps one could assimilate the number of inactive users to the number of users who add a little bit of negativity to each and every thread?

Actually, Leann is in chat quite often, and I find her presence welcome and enjoyable. I wish her good luck on the path she chooses.. and yes, we will leave the light on.

  2. I like to carry my brain w/ me, b/c it won't look very good to the pt. if you sit there reading a book to figure out how to treat them..

But I bought a PDR for each ambo to have on hand for medication look ups for the PCR, or to assist w/ poison contol matters.. I.e. correct spellings, uses, etc.

  3. They were able to raise the money to purchase a fire engine and an ambulance

now read the whole thing b/c I'm not on anyones side

Not a good example.. Not many towns with a hundred people or less cannot outright buy a fire apparatus or ambulance.. We have 900, and couldn't do that.. Low population, tax base isn't strong enough to support something of that size and Fequency of use.

Then again, if a perfect answer could be given for this, it would have been done thirty years ago. eh?

Edited: The topic is derailed... Just like EMS.

  4. Anyway you take it to them, the ADA will probably try and fight to accommodate him.

But whom will that benefit? A possible legal battle for your squad? It's already a PITA to be a volunteer. If I had to go to court to defend the need for a quick response, I would. However, if I were forced by the long arm of the law to "work" under conditions that will only benefit a disabled EMT, rather than a patients life, or the community at large.. I'd quit. You may not see it that way, but it will cause problems. But you can't make people wait for an ambulance, so you don't offend one of your members. I'm all for disabled persons living freely, and doing as they please; but it stinks when people have to put themselves in a position that could possibly do harm for countless individuals. How many people would it affect if the service was sued by X organization that heard of the troubles if it went through ADA.. vs. how many if it was just one person walking away?

How would his disability affect his ability to perform other functions as an EMT? Not lifting, but bending, accessing a patient, kneeling to a patient, doing CPR, etc? Somethings cannot be avoided.

  5. Actually, what you don't understand most of the care they provided or standards was those standards at that time. CPR has changed at least 25 times since the filming of Emergency, also " IV D5W" was a common therapy until the late 80's. As well, you might not realize JEMS founder was the consultant for Emergency. James Page (hint J. Gage)

I understand it perfectly well.. I'm not talking about procedure then, v.s. what is done now.. I'm talking about obvious, on camera, unscripted mistakes. I'm also aware of the connections. Otherwise, I wouldn't have used it as an example..

  6. I'm a volunteer too.. Please don't make us all look like the common whacker. Most of us are normal and just do it with out advertising. There is no need to carry anything on ones belt.. If there is a need, in your opinion. May I suggest black fabric, with black thread.. Wide webbing, like the handles of your bags, or like a mini-mag pouch is made of, works well. You can get it up to six inches wide in boxes at most craft stores. Duck canvas works well too, it's as strong as cordura, and looks the same. It's also cheaper, and available retail, where as cordura canvas is an imported product of the UK.

By the way, when you reply, look to the lower right of the box. See that button

    Use it. Please.

  7. It's just Entertainment. Look what Emergency! did for EMS..? JEMS recorded tens of thousands of people who brought EMS from the doorstep of the funeral home to what it is today, because E! inspired them. They made so many non-realistic mistakes, it was almost a joke. Only stupid people get a personal education from a sitcom, learn CPR by watching TV. Sure, they get a general idea.. But unless it's a sim doll, it's going to be the wrong idea. Bending the arms, etc.. Especially Dr. Bracket's version of CPR. I don't mind some EMS entertainment, lord knows I detest all these crime drama shows that are flooding the time slots... Saved! was entertaining. They screwed up during the pilot, they got better advisors, and made the show more entertaining. However, the critics say they jumped the shark with that cliff hanger season finale.. So it was cancelled. That sucks.. At least a show to break the cliff hanger? I'd like to see an EMS reality show too. Thats only my opinion, you don't have to like it.. But it doesn't make any difference to me one way or the other. Won't affect how I do my job.

  8. I wondered if the climate or weather would hurt the dept. issued cylinder or regulator that I leave in my Unimed bag in the SUV. Air Gas East, pretty much the only EMS oxygen people that I could find in the state, said "Depends". It depends on the normal climates, etc. If you live in an enviroment with "extreme" climate, i.e. Alaska, Northern Canada; Arizona, Texas, Mexico, etc. High temps could ruin the seals and O rings; low temps can break the diaphram in your regulator. But with a shifting climate, no extreme changes like real cold to very warm in a matter of hours, such as Pennsylvania has, it shouldn't hurt it. However, for safety sake, All "Chemetron Cylinders, if possible, should not be left in temperatures that exceed 110*F, or drop below 38*F, for an extended period of time. The same goes for B&F, Flotec and Hudson Medical Gas Regulators".

So. I just bring the bag inside when its cold. Not really that heavy, so if I need it, I bring it along. If I don't have it with me, I go to the fire house, no big deal. But its a better plan than having to replace the brass and rubber O ring, which are more expensive than the plastic (vinyl) green rings, but last longer and comply with federal standards. (according to the oxygen people).

  9. I fly someone if they need a specialty hospital or a trauma center.. two things we don't have unless it's okay to transport 90 or 120 minutes by ground. The Pedi Trauma Center is 2 hours away, and the Level 1 Trauma Center is over an hour and twenty minutes by ground.. If they have an extended ETA, I won't wait.. We often land chopped between us and the nearest hospital. I won't sit and wait longer than it would take to go to the closest ER.

  10. OOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooh! MATH! I LOVE MATH!!! It's perfectly logical. It works based on multiples of nine, given the instructions, any number you choose will result in a multiple of nine and you get the same symbol on all multiples of nine..

Now someone will say, well, I did it twice, and the symbol changes.. Yes, it does, but if you screen print every time, all the symbols on the multiples of nine are the same. Every time you do it, the symbols change positions.
