If I could find the original "Reilly's Rules Of EMS", I'd give the exact number of this response:

"When offered the choice of arrest or hospitalization via your ambulance, the drunk will be in the ambulance before you are. Corollary one: If the drunk chooses arrest, he's rode with your driver on a prior occasion!"

Do I have a story for you.....my neighbors son made the not so wise decision one night to drink and drive. While trying to outrun the cops he jumped the curb and hit a house. Uninjured, he was escorted off to jail. While being booked he started complaining of SOB and chest pain. The ambulance was called and the crew responded with all the gear needed for a full arrest (they were prewarned via cell phone).

One of the crew members knelt down beside the patient who insisted he was dying and asked him very politely, "Are you sure you're having chest pain?"

He replied, "Yes"

The crew member says, "Okay, we have to be sure, because if you're not the medication we are about to give you will kill you if you're faking."

Prisoner sits up quickly and says, "Wow, I feel 100% better now. My chest pain went away!"

The crew signed him and went on their way while he spent the night in jail. The best part, the next morning he decided to start his cell on fire. Now that's making use of all the counties resources: Law Enforcement, EMS, Fire, and Judicial. What a putz! :geek:
