Thomas Buell, 55, poses Friday Nov. 2, 2012 still wearing the fisherman's waders that he and four other men wore when he ferried women, children and older people to safety in kayaks as a fire threatened their homes at the height of Superstorm Sandy. The Belle Harbor, Queens, residents took it upon themselves to evacuate as the fire that destroyed 14 homes on their street moved their way, sending burning embers and smoke toward their houses.
