German EMS System?

Recommended Posts

I would like to live in Europe, specifically Germany for a few years. I graduate from a 2 year paramedic program next month. I speak German fairly well, as I spoke some as a child and took four semesters in high school. I guess my medic education is the equivalent of the RA.

How are foreigners viewed in the EMS system in Germany? In North Carolina (US), our EMS population is not very diverse. We have a large amount of British medics, most who were trained in the US. Are there any standards by which British or American medics can become German practioners? How is the job market for medics?

Riblett,

You probably be better off PM'ing one of the german members here. I know that there are least two active on the forum. I am in Germany's neighbour, Holland, so I can't really be that specific about Germany. However, I do know that the only qualifications that are transferable are the ones gained in the EU (European Union).

Don't forget, also, that a lot of German EMS is fire-based. You would have to buy into that too. The exception to this rule is southern Germany (Bavaria in particular) where organizations like the Red Cross and Maltezer Cross are responsible for EMS. The major disadvantage is that this system is physician led. ALS is provided by "Notartzen" in fly-cars, the role of the " Rettungsassistent" is limited.
