Sputtervalve Posted April 15, 2008 Share Posted April 15, 2008 I've heard how people are treated here when others think they are whackers so I'm curious as to what you all think as I respect your opinions more than my own families and co-workers. I'm supposed to be available when on-call within 5 minutes from the ambulance base or I let the dispatch know that i am responding to the scene in my pov. I have a license from the county allowing me to have a light bar and a siren on my pov. I also have authority to provide ALS care when on call and as a first responder. Hi Guys, i'm new here and I want to know whether this makes me a whacker. I went out and bought a Subaru Outback and outfitted it with a full medical bag that I found as an extra at my current ambulance service job. It's got a full oxygen setup, a full compleiment of trauma supplies. I also put together a rescue kit complete with one each size of c-collars, head blocks, a long spine board that I put in there. I found a old stokes basket that was bent and I was able to bend it back into place where it works. The department I am working for was throwing out several of their scoops so I took one of those. I also purchased a slightly used Whelan lightbar and a real nice siren. I have a laptop holder for the car but I don't have a laptop yet. I also took, with permission, the old radio that one of our ambulances had but when they upgraged to the new radio I got this one I have installed in my car. I'm working on getting a full ALS kit complete with airway kit, full round of cardiac arrest drugs and all the fixins too. As soon as they get their stuff together I'll have this set up too. I'm wondering what else I might need? As always, I know how people who ask this type of question is treated but I just want to know if I've missed something. spenac Posted April 15, 2008 Share Posted April 15, 2008 Wacker. OK to help you with the wacker mobil. 1. How long will you be on scene by yourself before an ambulance gets there? 2. If by yourself how will you get to all the supplies? 3. Even though authorized L&S, have you upgraded your insurance? Standard car insurance will not cover you. I used to first respond in an area that I would be alone for an hour or more at times. I found an oxygen bag with basic O2 supplys, trauma bandages, and c-collar was enough. Never used much more than my gloves honestly. The biggest help my big iron duck O2 bag provided was the mental illusion to the patient that I could actually do something to help, which tended to calm them.
