  1. UPDATE: For those that are wondering, I recieved a letter from the judge yesterday stating that she granted me permission to attend traffic school and have the points taken off my record. i am now in the process of attending traffic school, and re-submitting my applications. Thanks again for all the support
  2. Michael and Dwayne, my greatest apologies. Trying to see the humor in your post was not someting that was at the top of my list. Thank you both for the response. I now understand that no harm was intended. Sorry for the outburst guys.
  3. Michael, with all do respect....could you please keep your childish antics out of my thread. As hard as it may seem, I am a 20 year old male that is trying to fix his past and move forward in a positive light. I dont appreciate you making a joke out of my thread. I understand the severity and consequences of what I have done and I am not looking for forgiveness or "getting off easy". If the only thing you have to say is anything but support or encouragement, please keep it to yourself. To all the others that have posted, thank you for the understanding and words of wisdom. I hope to be hearing back from the judge tommorow. Thanks again.
  4. No, its reported to MY insurance company for my private vehicle. According to the company that I want to work for, they look for points as opposed to how many tickets appear on the record. You can get tickets that dont constitute a point by the DMV, that is why they go by that system. So, if I just get the points erased then I will be ok.
  5. I am not asking the judge to erase the tickets off my record. I am simply asking for permission to attend traffic school on two of those tickets so the points can be dropped. I was already informed that if permission was granted the tickets will still be on my record and still reported to my insurance but with a DMV point count of zero. I am fine with that, and am not looking for forgiveness for my tickets.
  6. Im sorry to have hit some sensitive spots with some people, but nonetheless I thank everyone for taking the time to post. For those that had a few words to tell me about this is life, you dug your grave, yadda yadda....thats what my parents already told me. I was just seeing if there was anything I could do now to start on my career path. Im sorry if im driven to the point where I wont give up on something...until its physically impossible to move forward. If the judge denies my request, I can say that I tried and accept my fate. For those that are interested...I spoke with a law clerk today and the judge only accepts pleas in writing. So, I wrote her a two page letter with supporting documents and delievered it to her office today. It is now in the hands of the judge. I shall find out hopefully by the end of this week. EDIT: Those three tickets were not for speeding. One was for "not coming to a complete stop at a stop sign".
  7. Rid, Thanks for the words of knowledge. For my specific situation...do you think my case is pretty solid?
  8. So, long story short: (kinda) A few days ago I applied with an EMT company, slowly getting on the road to becoming a Firefighter/Paramedic. Well, my future employer called me yesterday and imformed me that I was not eligible to be hired due to having too many points on my driving record for my age. I am 20 years old. I have no accidents, DUIs, or anything else but three speeding tickets. One that I got in 2005, and two that I got in 06. Truthfully, I was very devasted to hear the news. However, the manager did tell me that I could still be hired if I dropped two tickets off my record. Well, all my tickets are closed meaning that I paid for them. So, tommorow I will be in court with a traffic judge pleading my case to re-open two tickets and allow me to go to traffic school and have those erased off my record. Many of my friends and family think they will allow it simply cuz I am doing it soley to be hired and work as an EMT and give back to the sick and injured. Now, if I get denied then I have to wait two years before I can apply again because thats when the two tickets will fall off my record. I have worked so hard for this, I cant wait two more years. So, my question is this....can a traffic judge re-open someones case and allow them to erase points off there record if they have a legitimate reason? I spoke to a few cops/firefighters and they said that it wont hurt to plead my case. I will even offer the judge community service if she grants me permission to go to traffic school. Sorry for the rant...but my dreams are hanging in the balance...just looking for a little positive feedback. Thanks guys
  9. Good luck to you too as well!!! I am actually pretty excited for my interview because I am reasy to work as an EMT, its been a while and I am finally all set ready to go. My interview process is a written, physical exam, map test, patient assesment run through, and if I pass all that I have my interview. However, on there website it states that all candidates must be in professional attire throughout the interview process....So a suit it is!!! Thanks for the kind words guys!
  10. I have never had an interview for an EMS related job, however I have had interviews for all my other jobs and have been hired on the spot. Listeneing to my parents and friends, i always dress in a professional manner, always in a suit. I wanted to know from the seasoned EMS professionals what is appropiate to wear for an interview for an EMT position? I have both a grey and dark navy blue suit. Which would give off a good impression? Alot of my buddies told me that they just wore a pair of nice slacks and a nice shirt. Yes, that might be ok, but I want to stand out from the rest and leave a good, respectful, professional impression on my interviewer. Any thoughts? Thanks guys!!
  11. During an allergic reaction, what chemical is released into the body? This is a question that popped up on a study guide and I was leaning towards adrenaline as the corerct answer, but something else tells me otherwise. If anyone can fill me in, that would be great. Thanks!!!
  12. Wow, great info!! I was just about to ask the specifics of JVD but was beat to it. Also, I am at the Basic level so wont be doing anything exciting with these pts except treating them with a lot diseal
  13. Thanks alot guys for the words of knowledge. That picture really helped me visual the actual problem. And no the agency I am applying with is not a nursing home scoop and go, but rather a BLS 911 company that runs with county fire. Thanks again guys!!
  14. I had a question for the board that came up during an interview for an EMT position. A pt. presenting with a Tension Pheumo Thorax will display all of the following signs/symptoms EXCPET: A. Respitory distress B. JVD C.Tracheal Deviation or D. Ausculated Wheezes. My answer was C..Tracheal Deviation. I chose C because Tension Phuemo Thorax is a air trapped in the chest as a result of a punctured lung, thus you would have signs of A,B,orD. Am i correct in my answer? Before posting I looked in my book and I couldnt find anything related to Tracheal Deviation and what causes it. I looked up JVD and read that it was a result of the blood build-up in the veins as a result of the heart not pumping properly. If anyone could clarify these conditions for me at the EMT level and how we can treat these i would really appreciate. Looking at my scope, I cannot find any treatment (besides ABCs, and O2) that would be necessary in the field for JVD, Tracheal Deviation, or Tension Pheumo Thorax. Thanks in advance for the knowledge.
  15. One of the components to applying for an EMT job is to submit a copy of your driving record. I obtained a copy of my DMV report and noticed somthing on there that frightened me. My questions is this. I have a clean record, no accidents or DUIs. However I do have two speeding tickets on my record. When I recieved those tickets I was unable to pay for the tickets and was put on a payment plan set-up by the traffic division of the courts. As a result, my license was put on suspension until those tickets were paid off. Will this suspension allow me not to get hired with a private ambulance company as an EMT? Aside from this, my record is clean. What are some of the requirements to be insured by a private company to drive the rig? Do they look for DUIs and accidents, because in that area im clean. Would it be to my best interest to explain during my interview why the suspension will appear on my record. To this date everything is all current with no other tickets. Thanks guys.
  16. Well this morning at 8am it was the moment of truth as I took the Registry for EMT-Bs. Basically, the test was all scenerio based with a few knowledge based questions sprinkled in there. Honestly, I dont know how I did. People say that I know the material, so hopefully I pulled through. A few were a bit tricky. It was tough deciding between bagging the pt or giving them O2....so i chose the answer that was bag with supplemental O2 With the new testing it stops giving you questions when they feel that you have either met or not met the minimum competency level. The test only took me 1 hour and it stopped me at question 72. People say that whenever you take those kinds of tests it is better to have a little number questions than it is to have alot of questions. My buddy just took the reg. last week and he also got stopped at 72 questions and he passed!!! So, wish me luck guys...results will be out in two days!! Thanks again everyone for all your help and knowledge.
  17. I want to thank everyone that has offered there words of wisdom. I just wanted to clear up a few things. Right out of high school (two years ago) I went straight to college. I was in college for a year studying business. The university I went to didnt offer anything EMS or Fire related in terms of a degree. After a year, I decided to come back home and focus on my Fire/EMT career. Getting certified, taking fire science classes at the community college, and getting experience working as an EMT...on my way to becoming a paramedic. As you might imagine, the parents werent too happy with me returning home but they saw that I wasnt happy. So, my plan is to save up some dough from my current job, pay-off some debt, and move out in about 3-6 months and start working on a rig. Its whats going to make me happy. I'll take the sacrifices now, if it means a great career later on as a professional Fireifghter/Paramedic. Thanks again guys.
  18. For the past two years have been cruising the forum and have found a lot people on here to be very knowledgeable not only EMS related but in life as well. I have come to a stand still with everyone else that I have talked to, and thought that this place would be a good place for advice. Bear with me as it may be a bit long. Thanks in advance. I am 20 years old and am about ready to jump on a sweet 911 EMT company in Southern California in a matter of three weeks; if my interview goes well. Currently, I work as a retail consultant selling cell phones. I have my own car, have a few bills and live at home with my parents. Problem is this: My parents want me to hold off on working as an EMT for a year or so because they feel that I need to stay with my current job for a bit, save up some money and get bills paid off. Plus, the benefits as a full-time employee arent that bad either. Yes, they are my parents and i understand what they are saying, but I feel as though they are trying to protect me from the world. i want to go out and experience life as I want to experience it. Selling phones is alright, but I want to be on a rig running calls and chuggin away at becoming a Paramedic. i dont really look forward to going to work. i just dont like the whole retail environment of meeting quotas, and selling as much as we can, and all that junk. I just want to be an EMT doing what i can to be the best EMT and eventually Paramedic. I understand everything that goes along with being an EMT; the work load, the stress, hours, pay cuts. i know that it is only a stepping stone to my career as a FF/Paramedic. Also, my mother is very opinionated and she told me that if i work as EMT now I will have to move out and support myself; because she feels that I am going against her wishes. I am willing to get rid of a lot of luxuries to work as EMT as soon as I can. My father supports what I want to do, but wants me to make the right decision. I have worked as a beach lifeguard, was a Fire Cadet, and have gone on numerous ride-alongs and know that I will love working as an EMT. Now is the chance, but I feel like my parents are holding me back. So guys, what do you think? Take a pay-cut, sacrifice a little in the beginning and have a job that I will love, or just keep waiting and listening to my parents. I live for myself, not for them. Dont get me wrong, I appreciate there advice. What would you do? Thanks again.
  19. Medic 445...honestly, after reading your post one can conclude that you are lost within the world of EMS. If you have to ask what to study that simply means that you were not listening in class when your EMT instructor clearly pointed out what to study. With that being said, do not cram for your test and focus on your ABCs, assesments, and EMT drugs. You will do fine young grasshopper. Yours in partnership, Medic 441 Dude bro seriously, if you think you SAW a siren....then you seriously need all the luck you can get for the registry
  20. I was watching Grey's Anatomy this evening and one of the doctors did something that I have never seen before and I wanted to see if it was actually done in the field. A patient was in SVT and the doctor came in and did a "carotid massage". She rubbed the carotid artery until the heart rate slowed to a normal rate. Is this something that medics do, or was this some more of hollywood's wonders? If it is something that we really do, what is the point of the massage; what is the purpose? I am only an EMT, so any knowledge would be much appreciated. Thanks guys!!
  21. Anthony...are you runnin with **** out of ****?
  22. Im getting ready to be rollin on a 24 hour 911 rig in the Los Angeles, CA. However, I wear contacts and i was wondering how you guys handled that. My contacts begin to bug me after about 12 hours. What happens with those midnight and after runs? Do you carry re-wetting drops or before you go to bed do you wear your glasses?? Any ideas that have seemed to work for you guys, please let me know. Thanks
  23. Thanks alot guys and gals....its been drilled in my head ABCs before anything else, If O2 wasnt mentioned in the question then your answer is administering O2...treat all life threats while assesing ABCs....and AIRWAY, AIRWAY, AIRWAY!!!
  24. This past week I recieved my Certificate of Completion for my EMT class. I did pretty well in the class, and definately learned alot. I was the only student in my class to do more than one ride along. I just love the ride alongs, they are so much fun, and exciting!!! So, I have my Exam scheduled for the first week in January. I wanted to take it soon so I dont forget what I learned. I am little nervous however, because this is the first class that is taking the computer based testing as opposed to the written. Im sure it wont be too bad. So, For the next few days I will be reviewing my book and if all goes well, I plan to apply with a company called Westmed/McCormick here in Southern California that is strictly BLS 911. They are first in with LA County Fire. Its a pretty sweet gig for EMTs, because you are the primary 911 and you do IFTs if you are in the area. So, if pass I will be an employee of Westmed at the end of January. Thanks everyone for all your help, and I hope to share my experiences and advice with the upcoming EMTs.
  25. Being on the streets teaches you so much......things that you never knew existed. Aside from that, if you are paired with a medic as an EMT you will begin to become very comfortable with the way paramedics run a call. You will also become very familiar with what meds are pushed during certain calls. Taking all this info.....when you are on a call with your medic.....and you know what your medic will need and what meds they will push.....and your medic turns around and sees everything all laid out......now thats GOLDEN. I dont think anyone can say that that kind of experience can be gained in the classroom. My advice to you.....take a year....six months at the least....then go to medic school. You will enjoy it more and save yourself the heartache of playing catch-up. Good luck to you!!
