Wendy, although you are obviously very intelligent as well as educated I am getting a headache anticipating what is to come. I believe that like beauty, much of perception is in the eye of the beholder, but not all. I am not being a smartass or inflammatory, I really want to know if you deny that sexism (since that is the prejudice at hand) exists?

I don't believe that men have no right to an opinion on this topic. I just don't put any merit in it until proven otherwise by the individual. For example, I would be interested in hearing what Michael had to say, and maybe Dust if he's taken his meds. Lone star and sirduke on the other hand can keep their opinions to themselves :twisted:

This isn't because men are inherently morons, but rather because, like describing for someone who has never seen the colour murple, someone who has not had a certain experience can't possibly have an accurate impression of the reality.

Well.... I vomited at the 'whispering on my lips' part and had to stop reading.

As a student it was suggested to me by a male police officer that was in the back of the truck with me, that I should stand on the bench seat and do a strip tease since some of the lighting in the back reminded him of his favorite club.

HR - about 70 with Paroxysmal VT (how long are these runs? What is the rate and does he have a pulse? Some amiodarone might help)

BP- 70 systolic (Can we try and fix this? let's give him a fluid bolus)

Skin is??

SpO2 is 90% or thereabouts with assisted ventilations

ETCO2 is?? Now that we have slowed down the ventilatory rate?

Pupils are dilated and sluggish to constrict

Good skills to know, however they take practice to be useful and you won't get to practice much in the field. Ambient noise is something we can do very little about in EMS.

The OP is obviously trying to be inflammatory - illustrated by his/her screen name, comments and rebuttals, and the sheer volume of posts- however, he/she/you do(es) make some valid points.

I have seen and worked with paramedics who sign off individuals who probably should have been transported. The vast majority of the time there are no negative repercussions (for the medic), and one never hears about it again, they 'get away with it' so to speak. I say this to illustrate that this is a valid topic to discuss. Not all medics do it (sign off someone who shouldn't be, or influenced them to sign off), most people don't do it all the time, but most people have done it at some point.

I take this as a reminder that although my job is hard and stressful at times I still have a duty to every single pt, on every single call despite what I may be experiencing personally at the time.

Wendy, to me your and 'your medics' tx, assessment and advice sounds perfectly reasonable. This being said, "God" has a point about the bleeding into the esophagus. Since there is blood in the oral cavity or pharynx and blood is highly irritant on the stomach often causing nausea/vomiting it may not be prudent to assume the child was feeling ill due to medication side effects. My point in saying this is just that there were signs present indicating there may have been more to the pt's presentation.

I can only speak for myself on the original topic. I have never "talked someone out" of going to the hospital. Even if I though it was unnecessary or an abuse of the system, even if I had not had a break or eaten yet that day, even if it was four o’clock in the morning. I have on the other hand, made sure that the pt and pts family are making an informed decision in regards to their treatment options. This IS my responsibility as a medic.
