Today a friend on sent me a link that outlines 24 things about Detroit that would shock me. Some of this things outlined in the article did not surprise me but some of the other things, are not only shocking but scary. It is an easy read and worth reading as it has links to multiple sources that expand and source the story.

One of the links in the article takes us to graphs that outline the last 60 years of Detroit demographics and included a map of the city that showed the location of all shootings and homicides during a nine month period. Holy crap, it looks like a map of Juarez, Mexico, not Detroit. It is appalling. The situation is so bad that the police actually pass out flyers warning people to "enter Detroit at their own risk"

My friend was right, I am shocked.

Is this a sign of things to come for other cities in the USA?

Do you see indications of a similar trend where you live?

EDIT: These pictures look like scenes from some zombie apocalypse movie. Makes me want to cry.

  2. That attitude can be present in more ways than you think/

How is the above scenario any different than refusing a black, chinese mexican , cuban , russian, lesbian, gay, transvestite, or even a female provider to care for you ???

All of society has biases and bigotry of some form. How about a tattooed provider or one with lots of piercings?

I have seen with my own eyes people ask for a different doctor because of the difference in their race. It was a horribly embarrassing situation even though it really had nothing to do with me.

Although everybody wants to be accepted as they are, including their decisions, and I am against discrimination, I think there are differences between behavioral decisions and biological things we have no control over.

In some instances I feel like some people would like for society to accommodate for counter-cultural decisions they have made. In most instances folks are willing to accommodate without being asked, mainly because most people are nice, nicer than those that are forcing themselves on the situation. It has always been uncomfortable for me to see people try to force others to play like their personal decisions have no effect on how others interact with them and try to force issues.

  3. Are those mealworms? Frogs and escargot are one thing...but mealworms just remind me of reptile food. I'm sure it's a great source of protein though.

Those are parasitic worms that hatch and grow on maguey cactus. They are called chinicuiles. In the highlands of Mexico they are considered a seasonal delicacy. Another regional delicacy that is kinda unique are called escamoles. Escamoles are ant eggs that are harvested from the dessert.

I only eat them when invited, mainly because they are pretty expensive and my family will not touch them.

EDIT: Both taste better than you would expect.

Defib you eat funny things. ERDoc I agree on the normal meat but I will say that I will not eat deer from anywhere but here. A deer's taste is based on what they eat and when they are shot, and how the are shot for example if the deer has run after the shooting the meat is grossssssssssssssssssssss. Drop it dead and it is an awsome meat. You really should try it, if I can any this year I will send you a can :)

Eskabob im sure if your earthquake distroyed everything that reptile food would look awsome :)

When they run I think it is the adrenaline production that makes them so gamy.

  4. We observed similar taboo motivated discomfort when a porn star recently enrolled to become an EMT. Discrimination is discrimination.

That said there should most definitely be an acceptable standard for every profession. In such an incredibly diverse society, how to determine what is acceptable continues to be the dilemma The ambulance should not be a platform for the promotion of ideology or lifestyle. I have found that where there is a will there is a way. When all parties are willing to make small consecions people can usually reach an agreement.

  5. I was happy living in suburbia in complete ignorance. As far as I am concerned meat comes from the supermarket and comes in 4 varieties, beef, pork, chicken and fish.

You gotta live a little doc! Life and gastronomy has so much more to offer! Snake, raccoon, guinea pig, cat, horse, mule, all kinds of jungle critters and lots of insects and insect larvae are some delicacies I have eaten.

There is a huge and wonderful world still left to discover! You have really never lived till you tried the worm tacos!

  6. I imagine if the driver was a 350lb dude, the results would have been different, we all know that there is little any man won't do for a chic, especially an attractive one.

I bet you are right. The dude would have had a little harder time at it. I am still amazed that in spite of all the drunk driving awareness that anyone would be willing to help this woman drive drunk.

To think that so many people approved of her behavior probably indicates that they would hope someone would do the same for them.

  7. As I was surfing the net I came across a video of a TV show I had never seen before. The show is called What Would You Do? I have been fascinated by the real time social experiment and shocked by the results.

In this clip people who have been drinking ask total strangers to breath into her court mandated Breathalyzer in order to deactivate the kill switch that would allow them to drive.

As an EMS provider and a human being I am surprised at the results. People are absolutely amazing!

  8. Haha that video was great. I don't get stressed over the adult pts. Its the kids that hit me. But I suspect that with anyone. I love what I do. EMS in my opinion is the best lifestyle. I greatly the admire the work of EMT's and paramedics. That is why I can not wait to graduate and start my career in EMS.

I wish you the very best. Once we find something we lover to do, and find a way to get payed to do it, we get to live in the sweet spot.

  9. Just to study as an EMT? You are a child. That's something that really ticks me off....EMT's and paramedics are hardly appreciated. I know I'm just an EMT student myself, but I have worked in the field as an EMR. The field can be stressful, and we see the worst side of it. Not many people understand the many different things we see, the things we have to live with. I do apologize to anyone who takes offense in the term "we" because I am student still. You need to think long and hard before you attempt a career in the medical field.

I think that candidates for EMS providers should look at their natural bent just as one would with any career choice. There are some people who were "born" to be teachers, moms, engineers, veterinarians, etc. Some people's natural bent is toward the healing sciences and for many EMS in particular. Two people see the same thing, one pukes and the other falls in love.

If EMS is your particular bent you will find that it is not as stressful as it can be if you are working against your nature. When it is your bent you are most comfortable at work where you feel like a hog in slop. If after a reasonable break in time, EMS is too stressful and you always feel like a fish out of water you might consider discovering your natural inclinations.

  10. Everything about this case is wrong except that the policeman is going to be tried by jury. Even the charges are wrong. He should be charged with murder in the first degree. He had intent and he deviously created the opportunity to beat that poor man to death.

I think one of the sickest and most damning things about this incident is when he puts on the latex gloves in preparation for his cowardly assault on Mr. Tomas. That really gives me the chills.

Putting on gloves is an act that we as medical professionals do automatically, even without any conscious thought. We put on our gloves in preparation to show kindness, to ease pain and alleviate anxiety. We put on our gloves to heal others without incurring in harm ourselves.

When that animal in uniform, puts on the gloves, the same gloves we use to heal, with the full intention of causing bloody harm, but with the presence of mind to protect himself from the same blood he intended to savagely spill, I see his motives and intentions are clear.

That simple act of putting on his gloves, to do harm, makes me absolutely sick.

I hope they, including his defense and anyone who supports them, abundantly get everything they deserve. In this life or the next.

  11. Isn't saying "There is no reason for anyone to ever need to own such a weapon." akin to saying, "There is no reason that anyone should ever need to read that book."

Where is the difference in spirit?

(Sorry DFIB if this question is answered in your videos. I'm trying to get back into my City duties but didn't have time to watch them right now.)

No the first video explains the complexities of comparing statistics from other countries against statistics from the US because the USA is so huge and mostly developed.

The second explains how the first assault weapon ban was a failure and that the difference between rifles and assault rifles is primarily cosmetic. Mr. Cruz claims that the purpose of the comitee should be violence prevention and not a repeat of failed weapons bans.

  12. http://allpsych.com/disorders/index.html

This is where you will discover what constitutes a mental illness.

This is an abstract from the publication by the American Psychiatric Association & is used to diagnose recognoised mental illnesses.

My question is should someone who is diagnosed with a mental illness of Narcilepsy be categorised in the same way that someone with schizophrenia, paranoid type is? or should we look at each case individually, without tarring each person with mental illness with the same brush?

If you want to be considered professional, take the emotion out of the gun debate. stop laying the blame on people with mental illness. Look at reality.

I do not want to impinge on your constitutional right to bear arms, god forbid, but please answer me one question. Considering the types of weapons used in most gun crime, many are fully automatic weapons, like the bushmaster .223 capable of holding a 30 cartridge magazine, what need is there for them, outside a military use? Hunting does not need this capability, a true hunter is about the skill & aim for 1 shot, not 30. Why should these weapons not be restricted & manufacturers be accountrable for every one produced?

  13. I am not sure what you are asking or stating?

I tan across this video today and it made me think of the comparison between demographics between countries. This guy explains it a lot better than I was able. His context is different as I was focusing on schools, but his point is very similar.

    http://youtu.be/Ooa98FHuaU0

Also Ted Cruz gives a pretty good description of the the complexities of determining some rifles as "assault weapons". I don't think I agree with the video title, I didn't see any sweeping.

  14. But where is the fun in absence of hyperbole?

On a serious note the discussion will be had by radicals on both sides of the argument. The results will be interesting and conflictive no matter what they are. This is a discussion where people are insatiably passionate and many are not willing to give at all.

I think an interesting development has arisen that continues to widen the riff between the fed and the states. The worst part is that in the end, it will be decided by individuals who are appointed and not elected representatives of the people.
