I just need to get this out there. She is over-rated and falls down, a lot.
Thats it.
If you can put a EMS spin on this, feel free to try. =D

If you want to do an inservice check with your local haz mat guru... Theres some bulletins they can probably get to you.

That statement is not always the case, per state protocols. In MS, with the exeption of trauma, a pt has the right to ask to be transported to any hospital they want that is inside the services transport radius, reguardless of the appropriateness of the choice. If you for force a pt to go to a hospital they do not want to, you can be charged with kidnapping. The only way around this is to have online direction telling you to go to a particular hospital. As long as the pt is A/O, you typically won't get those orders though.
I don't have our protocols infront of me to quote, but they read similar. I am sure many places do as well. If you live in a metro area with 5+ hospitals, I can see this being an issue. However, if you are in a town with two hospitals, and your chest pain patient wants to go to hospital A which is 2 miles farther than hospital B what right do you have to tell them no?
As far as the article goes, they are selling magazines, its filler material. Readers Digest isn't the Paramedic Digest, its demo is the 50+ age group. You can't read too much into what its saying. I doubt that one article is going to have a wide spread effect on our care.

+1 to above.
Seriously, reflect on why you need them before you install them. I am a volly FF I haven't had a blue light in over a year now. More liability ant danger than its worth. A dead responder is a useless responder.
-
Admittedly it did not occur to me that the distance would be that short, even in a metropolitan environment
My bad...
With no knowlege of Austailian geography, in some of the bigger cities here in the states, you can travel 3 miles on the same road and cross though 5 or 6 cities.
In Indianapolis there are even whole cities surrounded by the city of Indianapolis itself. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway (home of the Indy 500) is a prime example. It is located in the town of Speedway, which is completely surrounded by the city of Indianapolis, but still its own governing body..

They can eat but why can't they bring their food with them? Many non fire jobs do not allow you to leave the plant or the premises so you bring food or go hungry. And yes it still counts as a lunch break and they get no pay while sitting in company property, yet these fire fighters are being paid while using tax payer property to go do shopping. How is that fair?
Next thing you know someone will say they should be allowed to do whatever they want because they rush into the flames to save life and property or some other idiotic hero complex statement.
At least the reporter is a professional. I also respect that he is brave enough to take on one of the largest mob ran groups in the world that is the IAFF.
Spen, normally you have some good thinking points. This is not one of them.
How many "normal: jobs work 24 hour shifts? You are asking these guys to bring the stock of a kitchen into work with them every 3rd day?
What if this was a 3rd service EMS, with no set station, caught at McDonalds between calls, 6 blocks from their post?
Not making the fire/ems argument, God knows thats been hashed out enough, I just would like to hear your response.
This is completely retarded
Bushy, I researched this when the story broke, the store they go to is just a couple of blocks outside the city limits, but about 1/4 the distance to the closest store in town.

Hey guys. Does anyone have power points or other material you use for EVOC and driver training? I am looking for things discussing legal issues, liability, traffic patterns, and first aid for a non-certified driver.
I promise I will not rip your stuff off, and use as my own. I am trying to develop a program, and am starting from scratch. I had a good bank of resources to dig through and lost a hard drive.
If you have anything or anywhere you can lead me feel free to shoot my a PM for my email address. Thanks!

Assuming you are dispatched by radio you need this first:
Or a similar product. Once you get that installed, and programmed to your frequency and alert tones, you (or someone with electrical knowledge) will need to set up a system with relays and transformers to activate your lights. You can actually do quite a bit with it as long as you know what you are doing. It would be fairly easy to set it up to turn on bunk lights, flash a strobe in high noise areas (day rooms, work out rooms, bays) and even open the garage door. One solution to the bright light effect, would be to set up some can celing lights with low lumen and possibly red colored bulbs, to make the light softer.
I should note too... thats the basic of basic options. You can get more elabroate systems but there would be cost involved and your dispatch would have to be involved in it too. Just do a quick google search of "Fire Station Alerting" and you can see some of the options out there.

Quick question: Anyone on it?

Facebook came to mind because it is so popular. I remember about 2 or 3 sites ago (;D) there was a collection of banners we could use to promote. I would love to have a PDF file we could print off and put up in breakrooms, or a couple of images we could put on our blogs/websites ect. Thats more of what I was getting at. Don't get me wrong, there isn't anything wrong with who is here, but, you can only preach to the chior so long, no? Phil, and Ruff, can only get into so many arguements!!! I do love the way the site has become over the last year, its a bit more drastic to me, since I was gone for a while, but none the less it has improved for the better. Take pride in what you have helped to create!

Seems a touch elitist?
I think we as a community do a very good job of policing ourselves, no? If we want to spread education, how can we do it without being inviting to newcomers? Obviously there are the good and the bad, but historically look at how long the bad stick around, or, take to be converted?

Sorry Admin, I don't know if or where I should post this at. Can we get more tools to work with to promote the website to our friends and co-workers? Maybe a Facebook Fan Page, some PDF flyers we can print and put on bulletin boards.... an option to E-Mail links to friends? It seems like things have slowed down a little bit, maybe we could all help to drive some new blood and thoughts/ideas/education in here?

I can't get off of work to attend, but if anyone is driving through Indiana and want to get a bite to eat or anything hit me up and let me know. I live a measley 2 hours from Dayton, and just 30 min from I-70.

When our service transitioned from volly to part time coverage, the town attorney told us the above. If anyone wanted to work part time they had to completely resign from the volly side and could only run calls during scheduled hours.
-
Ill clarify spen. You can't put in 8 hours at 10/hr and then the next 2 at 0/hr for the same company.
-
After that last post, maybe he was asking what a good driving record for his "id" is.

Does this new version have a mobile site, Admin?

Just as a side note, there are state and federal laws against volunteering time for your company. If you were to come in on your day off, and do patient education in the name of your company for free, you would be setting them up for a wage and labor lawsuit.

Mercy is safe, much more entertaining show IMHO.

It has been ahealthy debate so far in my opinion based on the history of debates onthis forum.
I nominate this for the "EMTcity Understatement of 2009"
I came in on the tail end of this and would have to agree is was very civil, realitive to the surroundings. It seems like every debate here ends with everyone agreeing to disagree, until they don't agree again. Not many will admit it, but even the staunchest defenders of a position leave these debates learning something.

I will be doing the TERRY FOX 5K Run for Cancer Research on November 15th here in Kandahar, Afghanistan...I am raising money/soliciting donations from all my friends....Part of the fun is we also have a "shaving party" on November 13th.I will post pictures...I am pledging to shave my beard (which is massive) and possibly my head, legs, whatever depending on how many people request it. If you wish to donate, please email me, we can arrange it through PayPal or some other form...thank you to all in advance.
How much does it cost to be mailed a lock of hair?

Come on guys, "Community" is so much more entertaining. THAT is worthy of an hour time slot.

Here is a doctor that doesn't withhold pain medication. Semi off topic. http://shar.es/1IaeE
96,000 scripts in 3 1/2 years. Another paper did that math and it came out to 1.04 prescriptions per minute of the workday.
EMS Lobbies To Take Over Fire Department

Phil....
I am not taking any sides in the overall debate, but he is right. In American politics, the only thing that matters is the money. If you aren't lining someones pocketbook, you won't get near the same treatment as someone who does.
I don't know the numbers, but reading Mikes statement in the other thread, I wouldn't be surprised if IAFF out spent NAEMT 3:1 in lobbying. Probably even more then that.
