  1. In this situation I would not have place an IO in this pt. It all depends on protocol but this type of situation you would look for an IV or give the Narcan IN or IM if need be. The IO is a great tool in the right situation. Usually, its in an arrest or in a unresponsive pt with no IV access and your fighting time. The medications that get pushed through the IO do get into the central circulation faster( great video on youtube showing it) but in this case with the narcan and heroin I would push it slow or your going to have a pissed off vomiting pt on your hands. The IO is great and easy depending on which device your service uses and I think that alot of the ALS providers are becoming lazy and taking the easy route on pt.'s who don't need it because of the simplicity of it. It all comes down to doing whats right for your pt. and following what your protocols allow. Thats just my opinion on the call. Everyone stay safe out there.
  2. I agree with Ashley. When I was in Paramedic school, I wrote out all the drug cards that we needed and even some that we didn't but I knew that it was in my protocols at work. Yes, I had the ones already printed out in the back of the workbook just like you do. The thing is by you writting them down and spending time reading all the info on each drug it actually helps you remember that drug. The color code thing works too, mainly it keeps you a bit sane after all the hours of sitting there and studing the same cards over and over and over. A change in the color helps you focus. It will all come in time, when you start applying the drugs to actually treating pt.s it will make it easier. For example you give a person having an asthma attack Albuterol because its a bronchodialator and its going to decresass the bronchoconstiction going on. Its things like that, which will help you learn the drugs too. Study hard and good luck.
  3. Ive had the 3M™ Littmann® Lightweight II S.E. for almost 6 years now. I love using this stethoscope. At the time when i purchased it, it was about $70. Now I think it is down around $50. You are able to hear most everything with it. Its better than the cheap ones but its not going to break the bank either. To me I pretty much field tested it and you can still obtain a B/P, Lungs sounds etc. while going down the road and even running hot. Its been Medic tested, and still looks like it just came out of the box. So when you buy your stethoscope plan on buying one that you plan on using for the begining of your medic career. Hope this imput helps. Good Luck with school
  4. The NREMT does not rquire you to send in anything other than the renewal form that they sent you in the mail. So just hold on to the CE's in case you get audited. You can now renew on the NREMT website, its a new thing I have not tried it yet. Just to make your life easier and save a stamp.
