  1. It is odd that Louisville doesn't make EMS an essential service...Being declared an essential service would prevent you from having the ability to go on strike.

    Edit:

As a side note, legislation just passed this year that made EMS an essential service.

  2. A city near here tried that with a remote operated dash cam on a fly car. The medic would park the car in a position that the trauma team could access the video and operate the camera remotely from the hospital. 2 issues that canned the idea were that the trauma team really didn't want to be bothered and that there was no way to be confident the wireless transmission could not be intercepted by someone wth similar technology, resulting in a breach of patient confidentiality and a red face for the organisation.

  3. Here's what mine have:

    1. Design it with the safety of the "tech" in mind. No sharp corners or cabinets to strike your head on. Padding behind the head on the jump seat, or change to individual captains chairs with 3 point seat belts.

Padded Cabinet Corner, Netting at head of squad bench, 3 point harness in the new one.

    2. A heated compartment or shelf for IV fluids.

    And a fridge too.

    3. LBB compartment on passenger side instead of street side.

    Got that

    4. Extended cab in the front if using van chassis. Premium seats, no carpet in the cab.

Got the last two, don't know what you mean with the Extended Cab, the longer cab you mean?

    5. A flourescent light(s) that run directly above the patient, front to back, not one on each side running left to right. It seems the lights are always in the wrong space.

Ours are incandescent...although fluorescent is an option.

    6. Heated LBB compartment -- always hated putting a naked trauma pt on 40 degree board (tried to keep one in the patient compartment when it was really cold out.

    There is a nice idea...

    7. I would like to see an ambulance designed from the ground up, instead of just slapping a box on a truck chassis.

    8. Design a box that wouldnt collapse during roll over (yes it has been done, but most companies still use the cheap, spot-welded boxes, that fall apart.

Federal standards require the vehicle roll cage to be able to withstand 7 times the weight of the vehicle.

    What are your suggestions ?

I'll think on more....Wife is calling for movie nite.

  4. Yankees trying to talk like Canadians is soooo cute!!!!

It's Aboot, not aboat. Aboat s a thing that floats on the water for people to ride in. Sometimes they are really big and are called ships. Another kind of boat can actually sink itself and travel vast distances underwater, we call these submarines. :D

  5. UMMMMM the fool, no the other fool, no not that fool but that one. :P

Wanna munch on some popcorn and think about it for a while? This is getting good.

we could try to argue that an EMT/Paramedic license is more important than our partner's life; actually we have to since that is what we have said all througout this post.

Nah, lets just get the thread shut down, that is easier.

I think it would have to depend on how I felt about that particular co-worker.

To me, the most offensive thing in this entire thread, far and away, is the request to lock it. Kat, you have the ability to look away man. You can stay out of the conversation instead of continuing to add your silly remarks, or you can stay, and continue to add your silly remarks, but don't you friggin dare to assume that you are so incredibly intelligent that you know what the rest of us should be allowed to discuss, or not discuss and to what point we should be allowed to do so. And you all call Crotchity arrogant? Really….

I'll add all the silly remarks I wanna and you can't stop me, so there too!! :P

  6. I always have been a proponent of cameras in the unit. Mine all have patient compartment cameras with recording devices but no video output. The digital card is a 16mb and can hold about 120 hours of video, the camera only comes on when there is power to the module, thus only when a patient is on board.

The only time it will ever be referenced is if there is a specific complaint registered. We have had two complaints in the last few years, but were rescinded when the plaintiffs were informed about the video system because both accusations were false.

    Edit:

Whoops, i selected "yes" when I should have gone with "No".

  7. I wouldn't know a combine if I tripped over it. :D

I konw he's joking, but there may be some who have never seen one up close. I will add some pics of a combine on my personal pics page and research for some pics of entrapment.

    Edit:

Whoops, seems like great minds think alike. lol

  8. this is what i'm confused about. how does one become an emt at 16??? there is something to be said for age vs maturity.

The State of Maryland minimum age is 16. I was certified when I was 17, the youngest ever in Sask. Shortly after that they mandated 18 y/o and a complete grade 12 education. I have no idea why they did that though. :D

  9. Shrug, I did my first ambulance call when I was 11, but that's a whole different story. It sounds as though your partner would fit well with Queensland EMS and the bullies over there. Sounds to me that he is bullying you and it's time you stood up for yourself. Tell him that if he's interested in starting a fight then he should pull over so the two of you can go at it, if he does, run like hell. I suspect he won't call your bluff though, verbally abusive bullies are like that.

Either way, stand up for yourself...ask him where his facts are. Ask if these are facts or his feelings. Tell him to get a new partner if he doesn't like you. I know that he is intimidated by you because you know more theory than he does, but don't forget, he also know some of that information is a waste out on the streets, and he knows the "Real" EMS job better than you. (His likely attitude)

  10. The physician then asks how comfortable are you in considering field amputations?

I figured you were going this way after that last one. No Need to amputate. At least if I am envisioning this in my head properly. Header Augers are surprisingly flimsy, with proper leverage it can be bent up with a pry bar releasing the individual from that area, then the feeder belt can be cut and the pulley turned in reverse to permit the legs to come back out.

Now....if you were to change your scenario so that the farmer was unloading the combine and went into the tank to kick grain down into the auger and slipped...you might have a more difficult extrication, but by that time, it's no longer an amputation for EMS to do, the auger has already done it for you.

Here's a good one. Farmer drives an old john Deere where the PTO shaft runs out of the engine and under a cover right beside the seat rather than out the back of the tractor. Mr. farmer removed the cover sometime long ago and knows that he can not step there. Mr. Farmer steps there and his leg wraps around the shaft up to his knee 3 or 4 times. All that is holding the lower leg on is flap of skin 3 - 4 inches across and some badly traumatised muscle tissue. The tractor is shut off and connected to a log splitter so you can not slide him from the shaft, nor can you unwrap his leg. The farmer is standing on the ground at the back of the tractor with his left leg entangled in the PTO shaft which is about waist height. It is mid winter in sub zero temps and he is heavily dressed, conscious, alert, very pale and feeling week. The leg does not appear to be actively bleeding aside from some occasional droplets.

Whoops, sorry...one scenario at a time. Back to the combine

  11. RuffEMS...just wondering...do you actually know all that much about combines and how they are constructed? I don't ask to be facetious, I ask because it would be a relatively simple extrication that could be completed long before Fire arrives. I work in a rural agricultural setting, the scenario you describe is not all that dissimilar from my experiences. Is sounds as though you are describng him trapped under the header auger and pulled into the feeder belt, is this correct? If so, how far into the feeder has he gone?
