  1. Theres alot fo debate on this subject all over the forums. Try to nail just one down is a hefty task.

Normaly for our dept we dont let anyone under the age of 18 to ride. More of a legal issue than anything. We have thought of starting an "explorer" program over at the high school and get them interested in the first aid and emergency medical services but that fell short due to the age restriction for them to ride.

As for some being to young in different parts of the country I think of it this way. If they dont want to see it dont look. If you dont want them to see it sit there ass up front so they cant. But my thoughts on it are get back here and help me out. It might teach them that drugs arnt cool and drinking and driving is for retards. Yeah and the poor little ol lady you walked past in the store after she fell just broke her hip. It might just teach them to be alittle more compasionate towards others.

I think EMS should have the little figurines like TLC. Lifes Little Lessons.

I agree. The two squads in my town both have cadet programs for kids 16-21, but most usually either drop at 18 or become EMTs and start treating at 18. I did it when I was 16 and had a great experience and learned alot. The squad always made sure to protect us if it was going to be a traumatic call. If the crew felt it was going to be unsafe or traumatic, they made sure we stayed back at the building. The squads around here would be in serious trouble if it werent for the cadet programs

  2. This is very interesting, I've heard some of these before, specifically MS, but I haven't looked it up at all. Wikipedia is a great source of information and I learned a lot. Come to think of it now, I used to work in a pharmacy before where I work now(I'm just a vol. basic/ff). I've definitely seen some cases similar to this where people are just trying to get meds. Or they are always running the kid to the doctor to get 30 kinds of allergy meds. Now I have rough allergies, but one medication keeps me sane wtih out any side effects. Some of the stuff people are on really scares me. And the doctors are really uneducated in what they are prescribing. I'm not a pharmacist, but of course I've asked them questions out of curiosity, you know, when things just don't seem right. There is a serious problem in this country, there are doctors that will prescribe anything to their patients. Now I'm not saying there aren't people out there with serious disorders/illnesses, but some of these drugs are just unnecessary.

Sort of goes in hand with the people who have a handicapped plackard/plate on their veichle. How many are actually full of caca? My mom had reconstructive surgery last year where she could barely walk for almost two months and the thought never once crossed her mind about getting a plackard. Where as you have some people that are just lazy or they have a minor pain which can be easily delt with or corrected.

    just my .02

  3. 8) Good job. My family has two dogs who are great pets. We would be crushed if anything happened to them. I hope someone would do the same for us godforbid we got into a situation like that, I know I would try my best to.

  4. Long Island has a lot of great volly FD and EMS services.. but the cost of living there is VERY VERY HIGH.....I would find a place u want to live (translation can afford) and then look around the area for volly services.... if you ask about number of calls,,, 300 is about 1 a day, 600-700 2 a day,, etc... thats the way you can gauge business....

Then just ask about the things you want like upgrading to ALS,, training etc.

    Good Luck

In the same region you have a majority of Jersey which is also volunteer. Middletown, NJ has a large volunteer system and so do a lot of towns in central jersey. The volunteer ems is all BLS, we have monoc that runs ALS in Monmouth and Ocean counties, I'm not sure who does it for the rest of the state though. The cost of living is less than long island for the most part. Long island is extremely high priced for no reason.

  5. But Springsteen still sucks.

 I dont agree with that, but on topic...

as a member (currently on school leave) of my volutneer squad in central jersey not too far from the shore this is not true of all towns, my town happens to cover more mutual aid calls over 24 hours on somedays than actually getting any of our own. And some of these neighboring towns are larger than us. On the contrary one of the largest towns in the county has one of the best organized volunteer systems in the country fire and ems, with an extremely high call volume for a volunteer system. Some of the other areas though you are absolutely right, I remember a day I was with my buddy after class and heard a call go out on his scanner for a neighboring town and it took 20 minutes (my drive home) till they finally hit out one of the squads in my town for mutual aid. Something definitely needs to be done about problems like that. The issues do vary from town to town, and communications in some towns, especially mine, suck beyond belief.

  6. Typically, I have seen a GREEN rotating or flashing light which indicates a command post, and likewise a flag in the area that says "CP" on it. Announcement of the location of the CP is also appropriate. Thats one of those things that needs to be dealt with in the pre-planning stage. I believe the green light thing is in NIMS, but I can't be sure. Should be something obvious.

I know in New Jersey thats the standard symbol for the CP, and yes Wawa parking lots would do the trick too.

  7. Hmmm, Off the top of my head, I would think,

    Breath - Pink Floyd

Comfortably numb - also Pink Floyd

    Jungleland - Bruce Springsteen

I will add more later when I not so sick and tired of being sick and tired.

i like your tastes in music

  8. I believe wacker is the appropriate term around here

Ive had friends call me up numerous times because someone they were with needed help, most memorably from a party i went to but left early and about 130 am was called to help with the drunks. Told em to call for an ambulance im going to sleep.

I have the squad plate on my car, have two pagers, only carry for fire everywhere though since when they call you go no set crews.

And whats wrong with wearing your dept. shirt more looking at VFD

  9. Yes three very bad words. I've also learned to be careful of what you wish for because when you do all h*ll is guaranteed to break loose no matter what time of day especially after literally 24 hours of zero calls.

And the idea that were not allowed to eat is true, around here the tones are guaranteed to go out in the middle of a meal.

  10. Hello,

In my squad we have a cadet program for ages 16-21(even though most either become EMT and move on to the regular squad or leave by 18 after H.S.) . I was a cadet for a year and a half and had a great experience. After a year I decided to take the EMT-B course and just joined the regular squad a few weeks ago. As a cadet one could do as much as training allows(not allowed to exceed training), minimum is a basic first aid and advanced cpr(AHA or ARC).
