Help with an article

Recommended Posts

I am trying to find an article that I found in JEMS magazine about documentation and scopes of practice. I've searched their site and couldn't find it. Does anyone have that article somewhere or other info on this topic. What I am looking for is information/articles on EMT's documenting medic skills and etc. I've searched google and there really isn't much out there that I could find.

Ok, I'll ask your input. Do the medics here have the EMT's document an ALS intervention on the run report? If so, why? If not, why? I don't let anyone write on my PCR anything at all. I've been involved in a court case. The investigators were ANAL about who documented what on the PCR and why. After that, I do not even let someone write the date on the PCR if I'm going to be doing patient care. If it is a BLS run and my partner rides it in, I do not write anything on the PCR. The less I or they have to testify about, the better.

I can't fully help because each unit in my area does their own run report. If I'm on an RN and RT CCT, then the RN fills out a report on the care/assessments s/he does, the RT fills out a report on the assessment and care that s/he preforms, and the EMT-B fills out a report on the care/assessments that s/he does (generally the narritive directs attention to the RN or RT paper work for further details). If I'm on a call and have paramedics on board, I fill out a PCR and the paramedics fill out a PCR. Same for the 911 ambulances (fire/medics fill out an ALS run sheet and the EMT-B from the contracted transport company fills out a run sheet).

I know the article you're looking for. It's the one that suggests EMT's should not write on their PCR's the actions medics take while on their calls, with the argument being EMT's should only document those things that are within their scope of practice. Now if only I can remember where I read that.

I remember this, too. Are you sure it was JEMS? I seem to remember EMS Magazine having something along this line. I don't remember which mag or when. If you strike out with JEMS try EMS Mag and see if it's there.

To answer your question, ALS = my chart. BLS = BLS partner's chart (if I'm working with a BLS partner. Most of the time we're dual medic. So it can also be BLS = my chart, too.).

-be safe.
