Who Knows About Grady EMS?

I know Grady EMS does the 911 in Atlanta and Atlanta Fire Rescue has ALS engines. My question is how is the relationship between Grady and Atlanta fire? on ALS calls who is in charge Fire or Grady? In some communities in my area that have hospital based ambulances, the fire department usually arrives on scene first does the interventions then tells the ambulance to transport and if the ALS fire unit feels the patient may deteriorate they ride in the ambulance with the paramedics and run the call all the way to the hospital. Is the Grady and AFRD relationship anything like that?

Given its size, I'm going to guess that Grady EMS most certainly has ALS capabilities. I'm far from familiar with how the majority of EMS services run, but I've never heard of an ALS transport service ceding patient care to a fire first response medic during transport.

Grady has been around for a long long time, and hale from the "glory days" of Balls to the wall, duct-tape and a prayer EMS. In general they have a good name, though they are a private and all that entails. A great high volume place to start, but I have know idea how long your longtivity would be.

Now as to your comment on fire department first responder medics dictating EMS...it happens far more often than you would think, particularly where there is an FD based first responder and a private transport agency ..and the contract for the transport agency is dependant on the FD's good will. These systems tend to be the poster childs for the IAFF Bully-thug stereo-type that we are all familier with. There are a lot of these type of systems in California, Vegas area, and a few other places. One that comes to mind is in Prtland as well, though this information is third hand.

In general, these are dysfunctional systems that benifit the FD far more than they do the patient.

As a former Grady EMT, my thought has always been since the Grady medic is transporting the patient, he/ she is in charge of patient care. For the most part though, there is a good relationship between Grady and AFD. Every now and then, you will come across a firemedic who is a complete jerk.

I don't know what grady does. I just know that every system is different.
