  1. There have to be a few seasoned providers out there who could give me possible decent advice as I am,and have applied for EMT school for Aug,and Sept intakes this year. What types of qualities should an EMT posses to be succesful in the EMS industry?Any tips, pointers, anything helps. Thanks so much,be safe everyone.

Well there are several qualities a EMT should posses. One thing i have noticed were i am at is Gurney operations, people forget about there partners and how to make it a team effort.

  2. hi first to introduce myself, my name is Tyson and i work in central california for american medical response. i have been employed with AMR for 4 years, 2.5 of them as an EMT and 1.5 as a paramedic. My partner and i were recently called out for a male cutting himself with broken glass. After staging for our local police department, we arrived on scene to find a young man lying on his bedroom floor with no injuries. Per family patient has not been acting himself lately and they wanted him transported for psychiatric evaluation. The patient was "less that cooperative" to say the least. We got the patient into the back of the ambulance and restrained his arms since he was already showing signs of being combative. While on our way to the hospital the patient became extremely combative, biting, spitting, kicking, screaming, etc. etc. etc. How do you deal with the patient? please no lectures on scene safety. if the patient was acting this way on scene law enforcement would have ridden in..

I have worked as a psych tech for 10yrs now as well as a EMT, i worked for a behavioral ambulance company for awhile and that what we specialized in was those types of calls, really all u can do is restrain all limbs, spit mask if u have one or just a regular Tb mask works just fine. As a medic u have the option of giving them a IM considering patient wouldn't allow u to give them a IV. Sedate and restrain. That's all you really can do.

  3. i have a question about # 18. i agree its the drivers responsibility to get everyone aboard to and from dest. safely but isn't the tech in charge? i was told that if the tech tells you to go lights and sirens , you go lights and sirens. Is it different with private vs 911 ?

I work Private and 911 back up. With one of our contracts in the 911 sector we always respond code 3 lights and sirens. its more for public image from what i can gather. Transport is our decision. Some partners like to code 3 all transports as others have some sense and only code 3 a unstable patient.

In the private general transport sector we will be dispatched code 2 or code 3 depending on the call and if we feel its a code 3 response based of dispatch info i or my partner will upgrade us code 3. example: "altered patient at detox facility, code 2 response, b/p 75/40 no further information" we upgraded and by the time we were there b/p was lower.

Its kinda case by case thing once u worked in a area and know the facility your going to and how they work.

  4. Were i am there is no option at this time for new partner, waiting for shift bid to come up again and trying to get outta there.

Talked to some of his old partners when he was on a BLS ride and they said he has always acted as if he is better than everyone around him....

He try's to piss people off just to do it from what i can gather. I have caught him on a few mistakes and just said hey i know your the medic, and explained to him what i saw etc etc...

  5. No worries. There has been a long history of me and him not working well with each other he has only been a medic for a few months as well. hell his first days as a medic on shift he worked with me. I think that has something to do with it that and he is in his early 20's

  6. Hello there.

Well my partner of a few months now has decided to decide to say i am just a EMT. He feels the need to remind me of this and also inform other of this at the er during our drop offs. sorry but to me that is just rude and unprofessional. Medic or E you were a EMT at sometime. I am working on advancing my cert, just sick of hearing thou..

    Sorry for my rant

  7. wow been awhile.. well my first call was a psych patient that tried putting my cell phone up her crotch cause she thought it was on vibrate....

Lesson learned never let patient have access to your cell phone, that was my biggest rookie mistake too as far as i know.
