  1. You can't help people who don't think they need help. If somebody is really convinced that their 3 week first aid course (EMT-:D makes them an educated critical thinker, capable of medically assessing people's illnesses and determining their medical needs, then that person needs a lot more than any professional guidance we can give them. They need a reality check.

The first step towards recovery is admitting you have a problem.

Funny thing is, I have never heard somebody with an advanced education make these same silly assertions. Not once have I ever heard a medic say, "Wow, that was a waste of time. I already knew all this from EMT school!" And I never heard a nurse say, "wow that was a waste of time. I already knew all that from paramedic school!"

I am not arguing the fact that a medic is more highly trained. However I do not know where you live, but i do not =know that where i live the above mentioned course is a 1st responder course for our fire departments. i know that is some areas an EMT-B can do no more that put 02 on someone and wish them the best of luck. but where i live we take a Year long course, or at least that is what most EMT's I know had to do. WE do preform some skills that in other areas of the country are considered to be advanced skills.

I will give you that there are those people out there who think after being an EMT they are a doctor and can save the world. I am very aware of the fact that i am limited in what i can do for my pt's. and if i could go be a medic tomorrow I would. I am often fustrated that i know , in some cases, what my pt needs and i know that the only person in the field that can do that is a medic. so there in lies my point, that i know when a medic is needed. I am not saying, mind you, that I am god and I have a wonderful education in ems behind me. I am saying that i have been in this career field long enough to know a thing or two about a thing or two that I am not an idiot. thats all I want medics to admit that not all emt's are complete morons.

  2. My reason for this post was to draw attention that a lot of bls providers need to train there crews to asses pt's better.... and i can not agree that it takes a medic to decide if a medic is needed i know when i have a pt with non life-threatening complaints i do not need a medic i do not need a "Paragod" or "water walker" as we would call your kind.. to tell me just because i am an emt-b that i can not do my job with out your supervision...... you forget that you started at the same place as the rest of us bls people...... all i have to say is there are some medics not all i must add that just need to get over them selves

  3. JUst a question for all here....

I work for a very rural BLS service, we have no hsptl in our county, and the nearest hsptl is apx 25-35 minutes aways. If pt is in need of als care we can call the hsptl for an intercept with medic, wich i am sure is a normal thing for BLS. But here is the question. Are medics call to much in cases where they are not needed? I have found that there are cases that EMT-B's call for medics just because they are not confident in there own skill level. What is it like where you are if you work for a BLS service?

  4. The question is, do we WANT to know? :?

The way I see it, everybody hates somebody. Why shouldn't it be gays?

That is totaly unfair to single out one group, i do not care if you are gay, str8, bi, black, jew or other wise.

  5. I have had similar situations... however i do not let the pt in the ambulance, i simply explained that this was not an emergency situation and that we could not transport a person for lunch.. i was concerned that the pt hay have a bs problem or hear trauma as well as any good emt would..... alzheimer was also a thought that entered my head.....

  6. This is true. my mother always told me there are two things you never talk to your friends about... religion and politics. but who i fall in love with is neither of those things. no more than who you fall in love with is, however i think we are getting away from the topic. I was wanting to know what people would think if they had to have a GLBT ( gay , lesbian, bi sexual, transgenderd) partner... especially if you have to sleep in the same room with them while on call.

  7. I know that i have had it very easy being an out gay male in this career. i work for a small service and they are all very excepting of my sexuality. I was just wondering if this was the norm or if i am the exception to the rule. And is it more difficult to be gay/lesbian on a fire department???
