  1. Back in the old days we used to have what was called a patch ceremony, when you first get your patch you stand in front of a line of people, and they would punch you as hard as they could in your arm. You would not be able to move your arm for at least a week!!

  2. Ours is a small society (the total population of the country is about 300 thousand) and since we do not have a history of public gun ownership, we have no "tradition" of armed criminals, hence very limited need for armed police (SWAT only, maybe 1-2 calls a year in the whole country).

For those reasons, I do understand how our model would not work everywhere.

However, I still think law enforcement should be left to the police (that includes any protection/defense needed), judging and sentencing should be left to courts and the aftermath to the correction system. Letting any member of the general public buy a gun and be all of those in one person...well, obviously, I must say it wouldn't make me feel any safer.

I see I'm in a minority here, and I probably won't convince anyone, especially given the cultural difference, but I still wanted to put in my 2 cents.

This has a faint start of reminding me of a thread on allowing the general public to listen in on police/FD/EMS radio communications, which we discussed for 5-6 pages on EMT city about 3-4 years ago. Don't see many of the same people here anymore, though. Just RichardB, the EMT and Medic2588 (Devlin, the book promoter )...and now me again...

Edit: Removed a potentially "flammable" comment about the jury system.

one question kristo if some one was breaking into your home and they were going to harm you or one of your family member would you not want the right to defend yourself and how would you choose to do this? if this said criminal had a gun or a knife

  3. This Idea sounds very possible now, the technology that we have today is a lot cheaper today then it was ten years ago. I think that you should contact your congressman or senator about a possible law to require auto makers comply that is the only way to get this or some other things done

  4. I used to wear a badge until I had a kid that had taken an od and was semi out of it and would not tell me what he had taken because he thought that we were the police because we had those big shiny badges on our chest let the cops wear the little medal targets not me! if you want to wear something wear a stethoscope

  5. I have only been involved in one and it was an older lady that I had transported several time she was not a "frequent flyer" she was a legitimate emergency every time and the family asked me to stand by at the home while the funeral was going on remember in rural areas the viewing is done at home some times (old fashioned way) and I was deeply honored the practice of having some one at the home while the funeral is going on is usually reserved for a close family friend

  6. TELL ME THIS WON'T HAPPEN TO US !!!!

    LOST IN THE DARNDEST PLACES:

An elderly Floridian called 911 on her cell phone to report that her car has been broken into. She is hysterical as she explains her situation to the dispatcher: "They've stolen the stereo, the steering wheel, the brake pedal and even the accelerator!" she cried.

The dispatcher said, "Stay calm. An officer is on the way."

A few minutes later, the officer radios in. "Disregard." He says. "She got in the back-seat by mistake."

    FAMILY

Three sisters, ages 92, 94 and 96, live in a house together. One night the 96-year-old draws a bath. She puts her foot in and pauses. She yells to the other sisters, "Was I getting in or out of the bath?"

The 94-year-old yells back, "I don't know. I'll come up and see." She starts up the stairs and pauses "Was I going up the stairs or down?"

The 92-year-old is sitting at the kitchen table having tea listening to her sisters. She shakes her head and says, "I sure hope I never get that forgetful, knock on wood." She then yells, "I'll come up and help both of you as soon as I see who's at the door."

    "I CAN HEAR JUST FINE!"

Three retirees, each with a hearing loss, were playing golf one fine March day. One remarked to the other, "Windy, isn't it?"

"No," the second man replied, "it's Thursday."

And the third man chimed in, "So am I. Let's have a beer."

    LITTLE LADY:

A little old lady was running up and down the halls in a nursing home. As she walked, she would flip up the hem of her nightgown and say "Supersex." She walked up to an elderly man in a wheelchair. Flipping her gown at him, she said, "Supersex."

He sat silently for a moment or two and finally answered, "I'll take the soup."

    OLD FRIENDS:

Now this one is just too precious...!

Two elderly ladies had been friends for many decades. Over the years, they had shared all kinds of activities and adventures. Lately, their activities had been limited to meeting a few times a week to play cards. One day, they were playing cards when one looked at the other and said, "Now don't get mad at me .. I know we've been friends for a long time, but I just can't think of your name! I've thought and thought, but I can't remember it. Please tell me what your name is."

Her friend glared at her. For at least three minutes she just stared and glared at her. Finally she said, "How soon do you need to know?"

    SENIOR DRIVING

As a senior citizen was driving down the freeway, his car phone rang. Answering, he heard his wife's voice urgently warning him, "Herman, I just heard on the news that there's a car going the wrong way on Interstate 77. Please be careful!"

"Heck," said Herman, "It's not just one car. It's hundreds of them!"

    DRIVING

Two elderly women were out driving in a large car - both could barely see over the dashboard. As they were cruising along, they came to an intersection. The stoplight was red, but they just went on through. The woman in the passenger seat thought to herself "I must be losing it. I could have sworn we just went through a red light." After a few more minutes, they came to another intersection and the light was red again. Again, they went right through. The woman in the passenger seat was almost sure that the light had been red but was really concerned that she was losing it. She was getting nervous. At the next intersection, sure enough, the light was red and they went on through. So, she turned to the other woman and said, "Mildred, did you know that we just ran through three red lights in a row? You could have killed us both!"

Mildred turned to her and said, "Oh, crap, am I driving?"

  7. It was 20 years ago. I think it was a transfer from a residence to a hyberbaric facility. My partner and I were in a Dodge Caravan high-top , we called it the pocket-rocket. The monitor was a huge, very heavy MRL. hmmm. single then, no kids. no health problems. I can remember a few calls from those first years. Bad trauma patients that we would take to the half-@ssed local ERs. Racing the competition to the calls, scanner-jumping. We only wore gloves if there was a gross amount of blood or body fluids. Needles went in to regular trash. We used sandbags on our backboards. We cleaned and re-used our BVM's. Spent way too much of my life cleaning those old Laerdal suction units. We used those APCOR radios(like the ones Johnny & Roy used) to call the ER, and transmitted our 3-lead strips from our new LP5's . We'd spend all the time in the world on scene with trauma patients, putting on MAST pants, starting IV's. We'd work trauma arrests. We'd laugh about the old load-n-go days, how little they could do. lol

Now that brings back some memories from back in the day

  8. Unfortunately that also happens that same thing happened to me but it was my first wife I was a paramedic and she was not in the medical field at all, but after that I met a wonderful nurse whose ex-husband worked in ems (different county) had he had cheated on her so we both had been through that pain but that was a long time ago and we have been happily married for ten years and are more in love today then the day we were married!!

  9. from what I've seen with my own eyes the rate is about 80% almost every one that I have worked with has been divorced at least once and some several times also allot of marriages fall apart when one spouse gets in to ems and the other doesn't there are a lot of very pretty nurses at ers and hospitals yum yum !!!

  10. my first call as an EMT a pt. drove herself to our substation and walked in C/O an "uncomfortable feeling" in her chest so we put her in the unit and started some O2 and transported to hospital 30 min. away (bls service) no als in the county at that time pt. was diagnosed with a MI and the reason that I will never forget this call is this pt. was my mother!!!

  11. Wish all the name calling and attacks would stop, no wonder so many look at us as a group as being non-professional. It's beneficial to have discussion so we all learn but the recent posts benefit no one. We all work in different conditions, with different protocols. We can all be helped to improve patient care by getting input from others. If we don't agree we don't have to adopt that persons method, but at least we have insight into how others think or what they are required to deal with. Let's learn from each other not kill each other.

good post and it makes great senes just one more thing if that "other poster" is going to attempt to use my name that they get it right the name is FLOPEYEMAN not floppy or any thing else!!

  12. You should not have an EMT ticket. Your so WRONG and negligent in the instances you mentioned above I don't even know wheren to begin. Do your patients a favor amd apply as a janitor to work at McDonadls where you will hurt none except yourself.

    pinymyachia?

these are your words and by saying that he was wrong you are saying that you would have transported the pt. and how would it be gross negligence to leave a pt with a higher level of care the original poster stated that it was not a als transport. and one more point why do you have to be so nasty about what you have to say do you think that you are better then everybody that disagrees with you?

  13. seems to me that you would take an unstable pt out of the hospital to a place of lesser care and you clam that you would do what is best for the pt? some nursing staff at hospital would rather have a pt transferred then take care of them and they need to be stood up to some times and I thought that we could have a light hearted discussion about things, I meant no disrespect but if you want to go at it we certainly can go!

  14. If you give a pt.sl nitro without an IV you run into the possibility of the pt having an allergic reaction to the med then you may run into some even more serious reactions and there hole system may shut down and you wont be able to get a line started at all.I think that it is best to get that line in first after O2 and ecg ect. because you might have a person that has no coronary history and has never taken it before and its better to have it and not need it then it is to need it and can't get it !!
